Trimming trees before storms start
Source: Diario Q Roo/Manuel Valdez
The Federal Electrical Commission (Comisión Federal de Electricidad,= CFE) began pruning trees and palms that could possibly affect power lines during storms. The workers explained that this is usual preventative work that is done on a regularly scheduled basis. Most residents are supportive of this work, but there are some owners who do not want the workers to prune their palms, which can affect the power lines and transformers, especially during storms. It is noted that authorities should monitor and challenge residents who plant palms in locations that could affect the power lines.
Coronation Ball Held For Dia de la Marina
On Thursday evening, as part of the celebrations for Dia de la Marina/Navy Day in Isla Mujeres, there was a coronation ball that began with the crowning of Shaunny Valeria Figueroa Quijano. She is a descendent of founding families of Isla Mujeres. The evening's entertainment included ballet folklorico with pre-Hispanic Mayan dances and folk dances from the state of Chihuahua, as well as participation by the Senior's Club, featuring Caribbean dances, which were well received by the audience.
Names and titles of authorities are given in this article, and the Naval commander said there are few ports with the type strong maritime traditions that are found on this island, where the general population is tied to the sea. He said that here, in the Mexican Caribbean, the sea is an integral part of the islander's lives, which is unique. He said June first commemorates all those people who work at sea including fishermen, merchant marines, oil workers, and Naval sailors, as well as the tourism service personnel who have collaborated and contributed to the growth of the state of Quintana Roo, and especially to the island.
He appreciated the welcome given by municipal authorities, and stressed that the sailors of the Navy of Mexico want to feel as though they are a part of the population, "Because we feel it in our blood every day, and we experience ("live") the sea day after day; we serve and assist and support them in everything that is required."
The band "Son Caribeño" provided entertainment, and the Queen opened that portion of the celebration with dancing. The Navy Day celebrations will continue with the wreath ceremony Saturday at 10am and the recreational activities on the Posada Beach at 2pm Source Diario Q Roo/Manuel Valdez
Requesting that scooter drivers avoid crowded parking on Main Street
Source: Quintanarroense/Ovidio Lopez Municipal Traffic police are asking residents to use the available parking and not to fill up (saturate) the parking along Rueda Medina. Vehicular growth has exploded in recent years, and main street became narrower. In addition, people have become accustomed to parking in the street, and prefer not to use the public parking lots, which are farther away.
When the street becomes crowded with parked motorcycles, it becomes more difficult for tourists to arrive, depart, and move about. This affects the image of Isla Mujeres, and causes complications for vehicular and pedestrian movement. The police are not giving out sanctions at this time, but they are encouraging drivers to be responsible and sensitive and not to cause crowded parking conditions.
Grate Repairs in Electricistas
Under the photo, the caption says, "Workers in the Public Services Department repair the bars that have become bent and broken from the passage of vehicles." The reporter noticed them working in the colonia of Electricistas, where the storm grates were in bad condition. He learned in an unofficial manner that all the water 'ductos' will be repaired in this colonia, where a total of ten have deteriorated and are now being repaired. That work is expected to be completed next week, and they expect to repair all of the broken grates. Source Diario Respuesta/Jesus Molina
Police clear lots in colonia Electricistas
Yesterday morning five police officers began working to clear two vacant lots because neighbors have been complaining about people gathering there and drinking and smoking drugs. After the brush is cleared away, the police patrols will be able to see any illegal activities. The public is asked to cooperate and keep their lots cleaned. Source Diario Respuesta/Jesus Molina

NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center Hurricane Preparedness Week, Day 7: Taking Action This is the last day of Hurricane Preparedness Week, and it's also the
official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. In today's video, NHC
Senior Hurricane Specialist Stacy Stewart talks about the life-saving
actions you should take before, during, and after a storm. Visit www.hurricanes.gov/prepare and www.ready.gov for more information. If you can't see the video below, go to this link. The other videos made this week will play after this one, including the following topics: Overview, storm surges, winds, inland flooding, the forecast process, having a plan, and this one "take action".
NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center Today,
June 1, marks the official start of the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season.
This morning's tropical weather outlook finds NHC monitoring a weak
area of low pressure over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and Bay of
Campeche. Development, if any, should be slow to occur because it is so
close to land and the upper level winds are unfavorable. It has a low
chance of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours. Go to the NHC website for the latest on the tropics at www.hurricanes.gov

There is a reason these sound familiar. They have six lists of names which they rotate through every six years. Here's their explanation (paste)
i.e., the 2013 list will be used again in 2019. The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the WMO committee (called primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it. Several names have been retired since the lists were created. Here is more information the history of naming tropical cyclones and retired names.
If a storm forms in the off-season, it will take
the next name in the list based on the current calendar date. For example, if a
tropical cyclone formed on December 28th, it would take the name from the previous
season's list of names. If a storm formed in February, it would be named from the
subsequent season's list of names.
In the event that more than twenty-one named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season,
additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet.

"The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reports that Mexicans work more hours than any other nationality surveyed."
"The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reports that Mexicans work more hours than any other nationality surveyed."
Another Mama Turtle came ashore on our beach last night to dig a nest.
The fossil of a 260-million-year-old ancestor of the modern turtle has helped bridge a gap in the fossil record and helps answer the age old question of how the turtle got its shell.
The shell is composed of about 50 bones altogether, including ribs and vertebrae. During development, these bones fuse to give the turtle its trademark protection. The newly discovered fossil does not have a fully fused shell and shows that the bones were flattening and transitioning to what we see today.

Next Saturday is World Oceans Day!
World Oceans Day By Yucatan Times
(This article is in English, so this is a copy & paste)
With a children’s drawing contest, beach cleaning and cooking demonstration of lionfish, from 6 to June 8 the World Oceans Day will be held in various locations in Cancun and Isla Mujeres.
The Festival of the Oceans of the Mexican Caribbean
includes the private sector, business organizations and tourism
promotion operators, it seeks to create awareness about the importance
of keeping the country’s seas clean.
The beginning of the festivities started last May
15, with a children’s drawing competition “The Oceans and I” was issued,
the awards ceremony will be on June 5. The company Delphinus invited
children from 1st to 3rd grade of primary schools to help raise
awareness through their drawings about the four major problems plaguing
the oceans which are the global warming, overfishing, pollution by solid
waste (garbage) and invasion of exotic species like the lionfish.
The prize for first place in each of the three
categories (1st to 3rd grade, 4th to 6th grade and from 1st to 3rd grade
secondary school) will be a tablet, swim with dolphins and tickets to
Xel-Ha .
For June 7, there will be a gastronomic
intercollegiate competition where the main ingredient is the lionfish,
which is plaguing the reefs.
On the last day of activities there will be a cleaning of beaches, where
they seek to recover the sands of Isla Blanca located in the
municipality of Isla Mujeres.
