The personnel of the Civil Protection department are continuing their work to prevent flooding, after there were forecasts of heavy rain. They began on Monday morning, cleaning drains in colonias Meteorológica, Salina Chica and Salina Grande, to prevent them from becoming clogged. The public needs to support these efforts by not leaving trash in public areas where it can go down the storm grates and impede the flow.
Since Monday the agency has been operating the pumps to lower the lake levels, to prevent overflowing, which occurred 15 days ago. These actions are the first step to address the Hurricane Season of 2013, and the agency director acknowledged that the islanders are accustomed to taking preventative actions. The next step will be collaborating with the public to clean their yards and rooftops.
With respect to the flooding that occurred two weeks ago, the director explained that employees of the company Ramejor, who were constructing the Municipal Rehabilitation Center in La Gloria, broke the strom drain pipe and its protection. Leftover mixture (restos de mezcla.) was thrown over it and the weight of the mixture and the debris broke the tube and obstructed the circulation of the rainwater, causing flooding in areas surrounding the lake, resulting in serious inconvenience to the residents, but.. (and then it ends.)

Temporada de baja afluencia turística ayuda a que la generación de basura se mantenga en sus niveles bajos

Manuel VALDEZISLA MUJERES, 18 de junio.- Leer másLINK...
The Municipal Director of Public Services, Aceves Gerardo Velazquez, said the trash transfer station currently has ~300 tonnes of garbage, which is the remainder of the more than a thousand tonnes that had accumulated. He said the amount collected daily has dropped from 25-28 tonnes to 18 tonnes, due to reduced tourism. On Friday they resumed transferring trash to the landfill on the mainland. The rains had softened the dirt road and the machinery could not pass safely upon it, and on one occasion one nearly turned over. Now they are transferring 60 tonnes of trash daily, whereas before it was 30, so they expect to have the Transfer Station free of debris before the summer holiday season begins again and increases the production of trash.

Alarming presence of mosquitoes
Alarma presencia de mosquitos   Ovidio Lopez

In Sac Bajo the proliferation of mosquitoes is causing complaints from representatives of companies that have tourism activities at night, who are fumigating the beaches regularly. They say this is a never ending effort that only mitigates the problem, because the mosquitoes come from nearby. Construction workers who are building sidewalks in the area, said that at dusk the mosquitoes come out massively, making it impossible to remain after 6pm. The problem was caused by the recent rains, and it was announced days ago that the Vectors teams would be using their chemical sprayers to stop the proliferation.

Clearing vacant lots

Limpian lotes baldíos

Five officers were seen clearing brush from lots in Colonia Electicistas, after complaints that vagrants were using the lots because the brush hid their activities. Some residents support these efforts while others complain that this is not the responsibility of the police. They say the Department of Urban Development should administer notices to the owners, which is within the power of that agency.
This past weekend, on Prolongacion Rueda Medina, police officers were using a sophisticated "gun" that measures the speed of motorists, to assist in compliance with respecting speed limits.

Low number of people at the beaches
Due to the cloudy weather and the forecasts of rain from Tropical Wave #3, there were fewer people at the beaches. Early in the day when the weather was stable, tourists came out to visit the beaches, but as it got cloudier at mid day, some preferred to return to their rooms. Navigation for boats under 40 feet remains restricted, which may continue for the next two days.

Sunrise this morning from MVC B&B
Mama turtle visited & dug a nest last night, that is not very clear in this soft light.

In real life, the sun behind the clouds was looking moon-ish.

From MVC B&B :  June Events

Friday June 21: Summer Solstice
Fri-Sun June 21-23:  Whale Shark Festival  See below for events
Sat & Sun June 22 & 23 : Super Full Moon (6:50, 7:50, & ~hour later nightly)

Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year. BTW the serpent shadow moving on the steps of Chichen Itza occurs with the Equinoxes.

Super Moon of June: The biggest brightest moon of the year
This year the Supermoon will be up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical Full Moon is. This is a result of the Moon reaching its perigree — the closest that it gets to the Earth during the course of its orbit. During perigree on June 23 the Moon will be “only” about 221,824 miles away, as compared to the 252,581 miles away that it is at its furthest distance from the Earth (apogee). Source link

Critter events...
In June the whale sharks (and rays) are visiting. Three species of turtles are nesting on Caribbean beaches & breeding offshore (The honeymooners are more obvious by Punta Sur, but we are seeing them here off the Bachilleres area beaches, too.)
There are little red crabs migrating to and from the sea, mostly with the full moons.  (Watch out for them on road at the southeastern end of the isle at night.)

Tequila- Soaked Watermelon Wedges

Yield: 4 servings  Prep Time: 20 min + time for chilling
watermelon wedges 1 in thick: enough to lay flat in two 9x13 baking dishes
1 c sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup tequila
1/4 cup Triple Sec
2 limes, halved or cut into wedges
sea salt
1. Arrange watermelon wedges in a single layer in 2 (9x13-inch) baking dishes.
2. Prepare Spiked Simple Syrup: Bring sugar and water to a boil in a small saucepan. Cook, stirring until sugar dissolves, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in tequila and Triple Sec. Set aside to cool.
3. Pour cooled syrup over watermelon and refrigerate for at least 45 minutes (longer if you wish).
4. Remove watermelon from syrup, and arrange on a platter. Squeeze limes over the watermelon and sprinkle with sea salt.
*An alternative way to serve these: you can use a melon scooper to scoop out round balls of watermelon to soak in the syrup, then place two watermelon balls on a toothpick and serve them that way (more like an appetizer)...or put them on a cocktail twizzler & add to drinks, with a warning!

Here is a graphic about hurricane history In Isla Mujeres from NOAA: At this LINK, it is interactive.
For this version I chose. "Isla Mujeres, Q Roo" and  filtered it to show hurricanes of all categories (eliminating Tropical & SubTropical Storms), within 65 nautical miles.
On the interactive version you can click on each track for info about that hurricane.
