We're continuing to work so that Isla Mujeres remains one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico. LINK
On Friday morning, a conference was held titled "Connect to Tourism" with a presentation by Miguel Ángel Muñoz Arámbula, director of theCoordination Section of the State Ministry of Tourism of Tourism (SECTUR).
José Jesús Castillo Magaña, explained that thanks to the efforts made by the president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, work is being done in conjunction with SECTUR to organize forums and presentations that will benefit local businessmen in the tourism industry and provide them with tools that help them consolidate business relationships.
Workshops will be held on August 31, Sept. 1, and Sept. 2 titled "Training to improve your restaurant", "Training to promote the product or service you we sell "and" Training to better serve your customers ".
José de Jesús Castillo Magaña extended an invitation to the owners of restaurants and hotels to participate in the training courses, which will provide them with the necessary tools to boost their economic development, as well as benefiting the growth of tourism in the municipality.

The Municipal DIF held a motivational conference for senior citizens of the island on Friday morning with the theme "I am 60 years old, and you?  Growing older is about living life and forgetting about your age."
The lecture was given by Professor Adriana Virginia Franco, who said the purpose of the presentation was to lift the spirits of the older adults and to stimulate them to persue their dreams and ambitions, now that they have time and space.
The president of the DIF commented about the importance of holding events for the senior citizens, who "represent the wisdom of society, whom we protect and care for as a treasure that we must love and respect."
Names of officials in attendance are given.  LINK

Recognition and appreciation was expressed by the Mayor to the firefighters of Isla Mujeres in honor of “Día del Bombero”,  who risk their lives to take care of the emergencies of the citizenry. He said,  "Being a firefighter means rising your life for the citizens, and for that we give them recogninition. Fortunately, we have not had any major incidents in our municipality and it is thanks to the prevention and intervention of you."     In addition to preventing and controlling fires, firefighters support the population in cases of floods, natural disasters and accidents, risking their own lives. This morning the mayor met with them to share breakfast, with their Director (of Civil Protection), Helman Ulises Berman Graniel.

Now the sun is shining! After the rain, clean in front of your house. We need to keep our streets clean of trash to prevent incidents in case of more storms.

Aug 25.  The effects of "Harvey" kept the fishing fleet in port and now they have resumed activity. At this time of year, lobster are mostly caught by divers who go to depths of more than 20 meters, while after September when the winds of the "nortes" occur, they will begin to use nets in the bay of Isla Contoy National Park.

Efforts continue to collect debt from Cancun

A document was sent to the neighboring municipality, specifically to the Mayor and the General Director of SIRESOL (Solid Waste of Cancun) regarding the agreement between the muncipality of Benito Juarez and the municipality of Isla Mujeres and the debt that has accumulated of 17 million pesos. The letter was dated August 23 and includes copies of  the agreement made in September 2012 about monthly payments of 200,000 pesos, for twenty years, for use of the landfill, which is located in the mainland area of Isla Mujeres.  The Mayor said he has no intention to take extreme measures, like a previous Mayor, who blocked access of the Cancun garbage trucks, because he understands that would cause a social and environmental problem which would benefit no one. The agreement says the payment should be made during the first five days of each month, and in the case of default or arrears, the legal amount of interest will be added for each day of default.
Isla Mujeres Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis said that he decided to exhort ("exhortar") his counterpart Benito Juarez Mayor Remberto Estrada because of the good neighborly relationship between the two municipalities, and he hopes that there will soon be a result from this document. Once the dialogue is exhausted, then the required legal action to follow would need to be announced in upcoming months.
