ISLA MUJERES, 29 de enero.- .
Wednesday afternoon, the birthday XCVII (97th) of the late musician and composer Virgil "El Chino" Fernandez was commemorated , for his contributions to the cultural heritage of Isla Mujeres. He was born on the island and is known for songs such as Mujercita Linda, El Reloj, Isla Mujeres Bella and Mujer Isleña. These songs are much appreciated by Island musicians and audiences alike, and with the rescuing and acknowledgement of this cultural legacy, new generations will learn the lyrics  about the bohemia that characterized Isla Mujeres for many years. As part of this event, the president of the DIF, Marthy Vargas Magana gave a guitar to the Director of Culture for use in their musical education workshops. The musician's son,  Virgilio Fernández Magaña, represented his  family, and said they appreciated the tribute.

The second and third grade students at Cesar Mendoza Santana primary school received environmental education as part of the work of the current municipal administration of Agapito Magana Sanchez, with the theme of water conservation and the importance of taking care of this resource. They colored drawings and stickers, and were shown a video, to raise their awareness about this important issue.
It was announced the the water company Aguakan will assist with this educational work by providing educational materials, and tours of the sewage water treatment plant at the southern part of the island. The program will continue all week, and then move to the elementary school Andres Quintana Roo.
It was also reported that in February students from the University of Southern California, in coordination with an NGO, will conduct workshops and do maintenance work to improve the school's soccer field.

Derriban postes de Telmex

A worker was hired to cut a coconut tree by the wife of the leader of the taxi union. The tree unexpectedly fell onto the Telmex telephone line, damaging two poles, and affecting telephone service to dozens of families in La Gloria. One of the poles was completely broken and separated from its base and was only held up by the cables, while the other remained upright, but is too damaged to continue to be used.  Officers with the Municipal Preventive Police (PMP) and personal from Telefonos de Mexico arrived to the accident site, and apparently the wife of the union leader was held responsible for the damage.
Customers whose service was affected were complaining of social networks such as Facebook. One of the company's employees said the restoration of the telephone service and replacement of the poles requires specialized personnel, who are expected to arrive in upcoming days to do this work., and at the latest it will be done next week.

ISLA MUJERES, 29 de enero.-

The information session by the Federal Tax Authority (SAT) took place at the Taxi Union Hall, and included information abou the electronic tool called "My Account" that allows individuals to keep track of their accounts efficiently.  In addition, it will help them to fulfill their tax responsibilities in the simplest way.The tool is available on the www.sat.gob.mx website. At the end of the briefing there were more doubts and more questions than answers.
Some union members presented questions about other businesses they own, and this meeting was scheduled exclusively for taxi drivers who are required to file tax returns. The union leader, Eduardo Penich Rodriguez said they may conduct another sessin and will ensure that it only concerns issues affecting taxi workers.

    Por Carlos Gasca.-
Fisherman Niger Rosado Moreno, 43, of the cooperative Makax in Isla Mujeres, suffered symptoms of decompression while diving ~12 nautical miles from the island. The fisherman made more than two dives, but apparently did not respect the dive tables and subsequently suffered a serious decompression that caused pain in his joints, as well as nausea. He was given urgent treatment in the hyperbaric chamber, after he was taken to the unit shortly after 3:30pm, and minutes later he was assessed by the attending physician of the chamber.
According to the fisherman himself, this was the first time he had experienced the problem of decompression, but after several sessions in the chamber, he improved and was discharged. It is noted that the hyperbaric chamber was returned to operation a couple months ago when the mayor promised the fishing community that he would  revive this service.

Progress on project for cruises in Isla Mujeres
Avanza proyecto de crucero en IM[+] Ver mas
Gilberto Fernández y Ramírez is the president of a civil association formed  to promote their plan of bringing small cruise vessels to Isla Mujeres. Its name is “El Cielo, la luna y el mar” and the president says they have received a good response from the three levels of government, which include the Mayor, the Governor, and the President, and he showed a document generated by their representatives.
The association proposes that the arrival of cruise ships and their purchasing power would improve the economy of the island, and would affect development in the Continental Zone with new jobs. The ships would require boats to transfer passengers to the Bay and the Island, and to anchor offshore. There is no date given for the possible arrival of cruise ships, which have not arrived since 1997 when there was an unexpected accident by the cruise ship Leeward on the coral of the Manchones reef, after which their arrivals were cancelled.
