Persiste ánimo por los eventos del Tianguis Turístico el próximo año

Alvaro ORTIZ SALAMANCA
ISLA MUJERES, 27 de octubre.-   The Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, announced the start of an intense publicity campaign to promote Isla Mujeres, which will include participation in Tianguis Turistico 2014.  He said, "Last year 1.4 million tourists arrived in Isla Mujeres, but the plan for 2014 is to have more than 2 million visitors and our strategy is to increase the length of their stays with promotions, including at the upcoming Tianguis, and we are becoming well prepared for it. He explained that Tianguis convention will be a unique opportunity for all the tourism service providers to be together in one location. Not only will they feature the natural beauty of the island, but also the excellent food, and the convenience of the islands proximity to the international airport in Cancun, our cosmopolitan neighbor.
The Mayor said 65 percent of the economically active population of Isla Mujeres depends on the tourism industry, and it is a priority of his administration to strengthen this sector. He wants to promote more sustainable tourism, to markets with more spending power, and to lengthen the average stay from 1.5 nights, so that visitors spend more days here.

Although the weather has a negative effect on the nautical tourism providers, in a way it is beneficial for the fishermen because the winds from the northeast cause the lobsters to "walk" and come closer to the coast of Isla Mujeres.  After the winds and rain calm, lobster catches are expected to increase. Blatazar Gomez Catzin said their last good catch was two or three weeks ago, following a north wind. He added that the construction of the dock for his cooperative (Por Justicia Social) is nearly completed and it is expected that the Federal Government will soon set a date for its official inauguration.

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- The Department of Civil Protection is monitoring the water levels at Salina Chica and Salina Grande and the pumps for both lakes are running. The water level remains low and they did not wait for it to rise because there are higher areas where drainage of water lasts for two days, so they are keeping the water level below the normal range. They are also working to prevent litter from obstructing the flow of water at the storm drains.

History teaches you about the great people and events that form our identity.
(That is Ramon Bravo, and the anniversary of his birth was Oct. 21.  There is a monument to him at the roundabout at the entrance to Sac Bajo peninsula. He was an Olympic swimmer, an oceanographer, a photographer, author, and prize winning journalist.)
La historia sirve para aprender de los grandes personajes y de los eventos que forman parte de nuestra identidad.
