The Police Chief and officers visited two grade schools as part of a new municipal program of crime prevention aimed at children, encouraging the children to participate with "Dibujando a mi policia en accion" Drawing my police in action. The workshop is designed to teach the children that the police are reliable, safe, and always ready to respond to calls. The participating children assign a name to the police mascot and make a drawing that represents how they perceive the officers. The winner of the competition will be announced on Monday, and the name chosen will be awarded to the police character. There are officers who are assigned regular duty at each of the campuses to monitor the entry and exit of students, and the vehicular traffic and pedestrians, to ensure the island has safe schools. There are currently 92 members of the Police force on the Island and Continental Zone.

The president of the DIF, Marthy Vargas, said her agency has coordinated with the Muncipal Department of Parks and Museums to schedule a turtle release today at 5pm on the Media Luna Beach. The public is invited and the focus is on the children, "to convey care and love for animals," she said. They plan to release 5000 hatchlings. It is noted that Isla Mujeres has been a pioneer in the preservation of these species with a management plan that includes surveillance of beaches, rescuing nests and incubating eggs, and finally releasing the baby turtles.
The DIF president also commented that October is the month commemorating the fight against breast cancer, and in coordination with the General Hospital, they will be offering 50 free mammograms. She spoke about the importance of self examination and medical care.

"Less than halfway into low season" which includes the months of September, October, and part of November.....(By that definition of low season, we are on Day 40 of a period lasting ~seventy-something days.) .... complaints by merchants are increasing and they are blaming slow sales on the lack of tourists,  the proliferation of businesses, and the mobile vendors.

There was a federal electrical subsidy program (Salida de Verano) for electrical bills from April 1 to September 30, that ended on the first day of this month, causing the price of electrical service to nearly double. The program is aimed at helping family budgets during the hottest time of the year when energy consumption is highest.
During the subsidized summer period, the lower basic tier rate applies to the first 900kwh of usage, but now the lower rate only applies to the first 350kwh used.  The rates are 90-95 centavos/kwh in the lower tier, and then 2 pesos and 50 centavos/kw.at the higher 'excedente' rate.  The superintendent of the CFE, Electrical Commission, Gerardo Castaneda Adame explained this and advised people to be aware about consumption to avoid unnecessary spending on electricity.

Local teachers still not on strike

It is still to be determined if teachers in Isla Mujeres will join the work stoppage that is taking place in much of the state. The teachers are waiting for the Comité de Lucha to conduct the meeting that will determine the next steps. There are teachers in other muncipalities that have agreed to stop teaching on Monday.  Parents in Isla Mujeres have not been given any notification, but have not ruled out the possibility that a decision will be made today/on Friday that will affect the students again. There are differing opinions among the parents regarding the teachers rights to fight for their rights and about the application of secondary laws, because of concerns about fairness to the students who have already lost three weeks of classes.

Good weather is currently being experienced and more is expected this weekend, with some chances of clouds or rain, but no heavy rains are expected, and no port closures are being considered. There is an area of instability out in the Atlantic that is being monitored. There were a fair amount of tourists seen on the beaches on Thursday, and most of them were foreign, including a group of Europeans, some from Spain, South America, and there were also several domestic visitors. The boat tour operators had some customers.
