With the arrival of summer, the number of tourists visiting for the day ("daytrippers") from Cancun has increased, and many boats & catamarans arrive with visitors. A store  worker estimated that sales have increased 10-15 percent, which is helpful, but s/he complained that many people are sightseeing (window shopping?). Tourism service providers said they expect tourism to increase when the summer holidays actually begin.

The ban on lobster fishing ends on July 1st and the fishermen are awaiting the opportunity of improve their economic situation. Last year catches were decreased to about 40 percent. Fisherman Arturo Lopez said "There have been almost no fish when they go out,  with most only catching 40-50 kilos daily, and rarely they would return with 80 kilos, but it was very rare for anyone to get 100 kilos. This means we barely make the cost of gasoline and have little left over to support our households.". Sales are expected to increase by 60 percent with the opening of lobster season. Many fishermen have had to seek other economic activities to support their families, and are looking forward to lobster season to improve their economic status.

Hyperbaric chamber without medical operator
La Hiperabárica sin médico de apoyo. [+] Ver mas
Lobster season begins July 1st and there is currently no doctor specialized in its operation to provide services of the Hyperbaric chamber if any of the fishermen experience decompression illness. The board is hoping that this problem will be resolved after the elections, since a campaign promise was made by one of the mayoral candidates. The board currently does not have a contract with the company Infra who supplies oxygen which is required for its operation, which costs 14,000 pesos annually. However the General Hospital has offered use of one of its tank, until the contract issues are worked out.
Baltazar Gomez Catzín, chairman of the board explained that the approximate monthly cost is around 70,000 pesos between the wages of the staff responsible for its operation, the doctor, oxygen, light, water, and other expenses. This is why we have urged the fishing cooperative and affiliated dive shops to provide at least some patronage so they can try to keep everything working properly. "The hyperbaric chamber was losing money because the cooperatives stopped paying, so we ask you, with the service free to the members, there must be monthly collaboration of support, because we cannot count on the government. We are asking for support because we have an obligation to provide services."
Hyperbaric chamber operator Angel Rivera Mendez said errors were made during the maintenance work, such as using galvanized brass pipes for the oxygen lines which could have caused a negative effect on the patient, and were replaced with stainless steel. They also installed gauges in the lines, which are standard equipment, to assure that the patient is decompressing and that the purity of the air is correct and everything is healthy for the person in the chamber. He explained that the hyperbaric chamber consists of two compartments; one dry where the patient is prepared for the virtual descent, and the other is wet, and resembles the pressure conditions one would experience diving at a particular number of feet. He said they have adapted oxygen masks without harnesses, and installed a color monitor to replace the old black and white (computer) monitor (to observe the patient inside the chamber). They also applied sealant to hermetically seal the camera.

SINTRA inspectors set poor example
Inspectores de la Sintra son un mal ejemplo [+] Ver ma
An anonymous annoyed resident showed this vehicle to the Por Esto reporter, complaining that the SINTRA inspectors routinely park in this spot in the morning until about 4pm, pointing out that it is illegally parked and making maneuvers difficult for delivery trucks. The resident also complained about the golf cart rental practices of people who are related to one of the mayoral candidates, (whom Por Eso opposes). The anonymous complainant also made accusations about corrupt activities by the SINTRA inspectors. The vehicle lacks a plate. (In Mexico, rather than giving a ticket, they usually impound the plate.)

It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases will begin in about a month & be held periodically until early October.

Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling.
