Nearly a year since the disappearance of the fishermen of the Anastacia

Ya casi cumple un año el naufragio

Recuerdan a pescadores desaparecidos de la Anastacia

It is remembered that the five fishermen of the Anastacia left Isla Mujeres on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 to capture fish and shark, but to this date, nothing is known about them. Intense search actions lasted for several weeks, a year ago, which included the islanders, the international community, and state and local (and national) authorities, with no results. Preparations and plans are being made to remember them, and to generate resources for their families, who still live on the island. These could last a week or more, around March 29th, and so far the plans include a couple of Catholic Masses in their honor.

From the Municipal Facebook site.....  (  FB page link)

The Mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, is keeping his commitments to improve the public areas and parks, and to keep them clean, so that families have safe areas to gather and enjoy healthy recreation and sports. He is working together with the state and federal governments to develop and improve services and public works in the municipality. He invites the participation of the community, so that the municipality will continue to grow and become even more prosperous, where everyone has a promising future.
The  remodeling of the park "Hormiguitas Obreras" was completed, which is used by housewives for zumba, in response to requests, and included the construction of bathrooms. It is used by dozens of families with children who otherwise lack a suitable space for recreation.

National Day of the Family is meant to convey the values that are representative of the more important core of our society, the family. Celebrate this day with those you love!

Boat motor stolen
Siguen los robos a embarcaciones. [+] Ver masFull article at this link

The motor was stolen from the boat of Hermenegildo Azcorra y Ruiz, aka "Pinky" when it was moored near the Whale Shark monument. He said the theft must have occurred in the early hours of Saturday, because his son noticed the boat was gone when he went downtown that day at 7:30am. His son did not think anything was wrong, but just that the captain had moved it. He said, "When we confirmed that the boat was missing, we returned to take a good look around and realized that it was hidden in the mangroves, but now it had no motor. There is light where it was, so they untied it and moved it into the dark, in order to remove the engine in peace."
He said the thieves have broken him with this action, since this motor cost him 80,000 pesos some years ago, but now would cost more than 120,000 to replace, and he wonders where he could get that amount. He said, "There have been several robberies in this area, with the most recent occurring just a few months ago, but the authorities have done nothing. Fortunately the area is better lit than before, when the street lights almost never worked in that section. However, we don't see the police doing foot patrols, they just drive past, using up gasoline."
In response to a question, he explained that on that same Saturday morning, after discovering that the engine was gone, he went to the Ministerio Publico (Public Prosecutor) and filed a complaint, who is fortunately has staff available on weekends.

Hotels doing well

Overall hotel occupancy is at 90 percent, and could be higher if it included tourists staying in apartments and private homes. It is expected to be even higher during Easter vacation.
Tourists were observed on the streets, renting carts, at the restaurants, shopping in stores, and enjoying the beaches and water. The beaches were less crowded than many Sundays, and as the day advanced, the clouds blocked the sun, and there were stronger winds.
The port was closed for small boats, except activities were allowed to el Farito and the lagoon areas. There were several catamarans over 40 feet in length visiting from the Cancun Hotel Zone. Golf cart rental agencies reported they rented out practically 100 percent of their units.
