The Carnaval celebrations concluded with a 'saldo blanco' / no major incidents. There was a significant increase in tourism on the island and the mainland.
In recent days, the police departments have received new equipment, including uniforms and patrol vehicles, which is one of the commitments made by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, to keep Isla Mujeres safe for both tourists and islanders. Recognition is given to the officers, who preserved the peace during the long holiday weekend, despite the increased number of visitors, allowing everyone to enjoy the diverse activities offered by the Carnaval Committee and others.

Drug dealer arrested
Intentan matar a narcomenudista [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Wednesday around 8pm, an alleged drug dealer, 'PSG' was arrested with a backpack containing a brick ~a kilo of marijuana, several packets of marijuana ready to sell, an undetermined quantity of rock that appeared to be crack, white powder that appeared to be cocaine, and psychotropic pills. A police patrol in colonia Salinas near the Gaviotas park noticed PSG on a black motorcycle, who acted suspiciously, which prompted them to intervene and check him out, and they found the drugs. He was transferred to the Department of Public Security (Police Department) and made available to the prosecutors, then transferred to Cancun on Wednesday night.
He has been arrested on two previous occasions for the same offense. The last one time was in 2015 when officers with the Policia Preventiva intercepted him and his partner on a motorcycle on Rueda Medina with a cardboard box containing 5 kilos of marijuana. After completing his sentence, he regained his freedom last month, but indications are he had no intention of changing his occupation.
The unofficial story about this incident is that someone shot at PSG, who was not hit, and when he accelerated away to escape, he saw the police officers and requested help, which caused the aggressor to turn around and 'practically disappear into the air', according to unnamed witnesses. Some said they had seen the attempt, but then in the end, said they had just heard several 'detonations'.
Assistance was requested from the Navy, who searched in colonia Salinas and colonia Electristas with no result. The Ministerio Publico (prosecutor) arrived, but no investigators appeared to collect evidence.
It is recalled there was a attempted execution of a taxi driver, who was shot in the leg when leaving Talleres, near the Hurricane Refuge, which occurred less that a week (sic) after another taxi driver was executed in his vehicle on Jesus Martinez Ross Avenue, in colonia Amplificacion la Gloria. (The murder occurred Nov. 8 and the shooting was Dec. 15 .LINK. )

Good expectations in the hotel industry
Buenas expectativas en el sector hotelero [+] Ver masFull article at this link
There are good numbers of overnight tourists after the conclusion of Carnaval in Isla Mujeres, and occupancy is expected to increase even more during the Easter holidays. There are concerns that the increased Ultramar ferry fees will have a negative effect and cause economic harm to the island.
Tourism services provider Ismael Tuyub said, "State residents must pay 200 pesos round trip, which is 800 pesos for a family of four, just for the ferry transportation. Therefore, people may prefer to stay in Cancun, or take a snorkel tour, but if the fare were cheaper they would be more likely to rent golf carts, to eat and drink in bars and restaurants, and to buy things they like."
The reporter toured around the beaches and streets, noting there was a moderate number of people enjoying the beaches, and many catamarans docked at the piers with animated, curious tourists who would later be buying souvenirs to remember their visit. The reporter noted the comisionistas at the Maritime Terminal were awaiting the arrival of the next ferry to offer services to tourists such as boat tours and golf cart rentals, as well as workers at the tourism modules and the diving companies who were ready to offer information and services.
The reporter spoke to hotel receptionists who said there is a good tourism presence, and they noted that the average stay is about three nights. The reporter commented that it is improper for hotels to rent loungers and umbrellas on Playa Centro since it is a Blue Flag beach, services should be free, and there should be bathrooms and showers available.

Nautical navigation back to normal, but....
Se normalizó la navegación, pero….. [+] Ver masFull article at this link

March 2 The port was opened for general navigation, which is expected to continue until Friday afternoon, when a cold front is expected to arrive with winds of up to 50 km/hr and stronger gusts. Restrictions were imposed on boats under 40 feet on Wednesday, but now they are again allowed to travel to Isla Contoy, Puerto Juarez and Punta Sam. However caution is recommended, and the weather is expected to change on Friday due to the cold front that is now located in Veracruz. This is expected to close the port for navigation by small boats, and the restrictions could continue until Monday.
Fishermen who ventured out returned with only 20-30 kilos of fish per boat. Those who were not careful enough to remove their lobster traps in time (the season ended Feb 28) wonder if they will find them where they were left, because there is a high rate of theft of traps.
