The Director of the General Hospital, David Valenzo Loaeza said that data from the latest study at the hospital indicates that ~90% of the complaints are directed at the nursing staff, saying that they are unpleasant. He said this seems strange because they are from the island. They are unsure what actions will be taken in respect to this when staffing the new hospital, but they are considering recruiting staff from elsewhere. He said they seek to provide the highest quality of care to patients and if there is a problem with the nurses, they will have to find a solution promptly.

Major progress has been made on at least half of the 14 murals being painted in different locations, and they could be ready before the stipulated time. According to the assistants and support staff of the artists, the time limit is one week, but some are expected to finish ahead of schedule. The work began yesterday and is expected to be ready on Tuesday, July 29th.  The 14 murals are being painted by 15 artists from locations including: New Orleans, Japan, Spain, Australia, United States and Mexico. The themes include threats that are faced in the oceans by the world's largest fish, the whale sharks, as well as by manta rays.

The taxi drivers who witnessed the disagreement said it was between Sergio Ramon "B", aka el Barbas, who is a leader of the tricycle porters, and Mario "A" aka Chocomilk, who is a tricycle porter. They say two porters wanted to carry several bags of fish for  'Pelayo', who wanted to pay 100 pesos to have the cargo transported to his automobile. The police arrived to intervene and charged the the porters with disturbing the peace, and took them to the municipal jail, where they must stay for 72 hours or pay a penalty determined by the judge.
The taxi drivers want the municipal government to place regulations and restrictions on the tricycle porters.

Se le baja la presión a un turista

    0 24 de julio de 2014

French tourist, Julian Clever, 26, received attention for the paramedics, when he felt badly after swimming with the whale sharks. Although the swells were not large, he was not accustomed to this and began to feel badly. Things became more complicated when his blood pressure fell, and he was met by Red Cross paramedics at the pier of the family Lima Zuno. He did not require transport to the hospital and only required attention for a few minutes, and his blood pressure was restored.

    Por Carlos Gasca > Quequi.-
According to the police report, after a disagreement between two porters occurred on the wooden pier, they decided to settle the matter with blows.  The incident occurred shortly before noon,  and the police intervened between Sergio Ramón Barbudo Trejo, 50, and Mario Aké López, 59. It is believed that they were fighting over a tourist's luggage, and it is noted a few weeks ago there was a conflict in the street between porters and taxi drivers. That incident caused indignation among islanders because it presents a bad image of the island.

Murals reflect the identity of the island

This article says the group is called Sea World, but I don't think this is correct. It says ten artists are involved, but most reports say 15 artists are painting murals on 14 walls & that the project is called Sea Walls. I posted information, links, videos and photos taken today in the events section, below.

Boat ambulance not operating
Sin funcionar la ambulancia marítima.. [+] Ver mas
After a year, the boat ambulance remains unavailable, and the last emergency transfer went over on the ferry. The rapid response team of the Navy is available at night for road accident victims who require transport to the mainland. The Mexican Red Cross provided the first sea transport vessel three decades ago, but a lack of resources for maintenance left them in a position where they could not provide ongoing service.

Streets look like boat repair shops
Calles parecen talleres de lanchas[+] Ver mas
This complaint focuses on a white boat with a red band that is parked on the street Pelicano in colonia Lol-Be, near an access to the Salina Grande walkway. They note that the trailer has blocks, but that if it was hit and it rolled down the hill into the road, there could be an accident of major proportions.
In the past there were complaints about boats in the adjoining  neighborhood Caridad del Cobre, which were published in the media, and that activity decreased. Boat owners say it is very expensive to move their boats to a shipyard for maintenance, therefore, they resort to this practice, and allege that they have permission from municipal authorities.

Athletes, parents, and fans: Very annoyed
Gran molestia de aficionados, papás y deportistas] Ver mas
Fans, parents, and athletes were annoyed because the new roof has not been installed at the soccer field, and they were left without shade.  It is the beginning of the formal training for the teams of the 4th and 5th national divisions, and the roofing has been dismantled but not yet replaced. The previous steel and zinc materials were at risk of falling or being brought down by a strong wind. Some volunteers provided tarps for the coaches and players in the area where they gather. The work was expected to be completed in a matter of days, but a week has passed. It is noted that there are other aspects of this facility that need maintenance such as the artificial turf, the goals, and the fencing, as well as cleaning of the drains.

NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.

We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.

The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.

Follow up...The Go Fund Me campaign by Sally Margolis to assist with the HIV testing events by Brazos Abiertos was successful, & BA have also coordinated with the City to provide education about sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy in the schools, monthly.
