“Operación Salvavidas, Verano 2014” by the Navy began on Saturday with participation by 60 sailors, and boats, who will visit the beaches and visitors areas, as they do every year. This operation on the major tourist beaches will continue until August 18th, and include patrols on land and water to safeguard human life and maintain order, as well as provide first aid and rescue if necessary.
Recommendation for the general public include: Don't go into the water after eating and/or drinking alcohol, drink water constantly to stay hydrated, respect advice from the lifeguards, and when traveling in small boats, wear life jackets and don't exceed capacity. Don't obstruct beach accesses, and leave space for patrol vehicles and ambulances. Don't litter on the beaches and respect the warnings from the Port Authority which are marked by green, yellow, and red flags. The naval staff offers first aid and there are lifeguards from the Civil Protection agency, and an emergency 24 hour number 088.

Attempted suicide by jumping into the sea
Intenta suicidarse, arrojándose al mar [+] Ver mas

According to witnesses, at 6:35am, when the ferry had left for Puerto Juarez, a woman jumped into the water from the pier, who appeared inebriated, and was rescued by nearby volunteers. With supervision from the police, she was transferred to the General Hospital, and left walking under her own power, with a friend, around 11am.
Her friend said she works at "Rutis" bar and was returning home to Cancun. Her name was given as Carina Gomez Reyes, and some said she was depressed, and this is why they think she jumped from the pier, which has a height of less than two meters.
When she suddenly jumped in the water, volunteers responded immediately, as well as a small boat (a lancha), to assist in the rescue. She swallowed some water and did not respond normally when they got her into the boat, but she had good vital signs and was moved to the wooden pier, and then to the hospital. The reporter notes that she and a dozen other women, who work at night in places like "Casa Blanca" and "Broncos", return home to Cancun on the first boats that cross when ferry service resumes in the morning to Puerto Juarez.

Karen Rosenberg's

NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.

We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.

The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.

Follow up...The Go Fund Me campaign by Sally Margolis to assist with the HIV testing events by Brazos Abiertos was successful, & BA have also coordinated with the City to provide education about sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy in the schools, monthly.
