The Municipal System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents was reinstalled on Thursday to comply with the laws that protect children and adolescents in Isla Mujeres, Among the officials in attendance was the executive secretary of the State System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents, Norma Gabriela Salazar Rivera. The Mayor spoke about the importance of protecting children who are the future of the municipality, and of complying with laws that protect them, demonstrating a commitment to being a safe municipality. Low salaries fail to attract specialists to Isla Mujeres Community Hospital LINK
- Homero León Pérez, Head of Sanitary Jurisdiction #2 of Cancun, said that due to the unattractive salaries, few medical specialists are interested in covering the specialties needed for the Community Hospital of Isla Mujeres. He said they are working with the Ministry of Health to improve these amounts, but they are awaiting changes that are expected with the new President of Mexico and his administration. Specialists that are needed include Pediatrics, Gynecology, and Internal Medicine.
Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) representative in Isla Mujeres, Vladimir Vallejo Molina, said they have received complaints against Aguakan, as well as Telcel, Telmex, and Cablemas .LINK
The head of the Oficina de Recaudación de Rentas (Revenue Collection) in Isla Mujeres, Jesús Contreras Gómez, encouraged holders of liquor licenses to take advantage of the discounts of up to 50 percent. LINK He said of the 500 registered businesses, only about 200 have taken advantage of the discount, which ends on Feb. 28th.

Mayor says the Mobility Studies are expected to be completed next month and then a call will be made for companies who want to bid on offering public transportation services on the island and in the Continental Zone. Parents of students are among those with complaints about taxi drivers, who say urban transportation is needed because the taxis often pass by the students without stopping for them.

Winds have restricted fishermen to port for the past week
Actividad pesquera paralizada por una semana
The "surada" winds from the south are expected to reduce on Sunday, which have kept boats under 40 feet restricted to port except in the area of the lagoons and el Farito, and the ferries have been operating. The fishermen have been unable to work for the past week, and the last day of the lobster catching season in Thursday, Feb. 28th. The seamen offering tours have also suffered economically from the windy weather, which is expected to continue on Saturday. It is hoped the Cold Front #40 doesn't have much force when it arrives in the area of the Yucatan Peninsula.Municipal Development Plan 2018-2021 approved

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Isla Blanca Kite Festival (on the mainland) says they've discontinued after ten years due to parking problems, but here's their page in case that changes. LINK
In February, generally the temperatures are very pleasant, but weather for this month includes "nortes", fronts from the north whose winds often cause small boats to be restricted to port, and they may bring clouds, rain, and cooler temps. They cause the lobster to come out of their hiding places and move south across the seabed, increasing the catches of the fishermen.
Fishermen in this region are banned from catching Grouper and Octopus in February (and March). Lobster season ends after Feb. 28th (Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available). LINK
