The press release with the photos published yesterday of the distribution of scholarships says there were 156 payments distributed for March-April and for May-June. The scholarships are in various categories including academic excellence, special needs, transportation assistance, economic need, and excellence in sports. The Mayor told the students that this is a way of saying, "Isla Mujeres trusts you, believes in your talent and we are proud of your effort."
He said, "The municipality has a commitment to our children and youth, because we know that investing in your present will ensure an island that is very successful in the future." He added that as a government, the greatest amount of resources will be provided to encourage children and young people to continue studying, because an educated islander will contribute to the transformation of their community and their country.
He concluded by saying that the scholarships also mean the students have a responsibility and they should be very committed to excellence and to supporting and encouraging their classmates, and doing their part to move forward as a united community.

City clean-up brigade...will translate the text later or tomorrow.

As City government, we know the importance of identifying the characteristics of the island population, how it has evolved and what trends it follows, in order to provide a better and more efficient service. Therefore, today we installed the Municipal Council of Population (Comupo), for the benefit of all the inhabitants of #IslaMujeres.

Taxi drivers want new election of their union leader
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/taxistas-de-isla-mujeres-e…/

A press conference was held in Cancun by  Miguel Ángel Chan Mena, aka Fishman, and Julio Osorio Magana, who say the leadership of the taxi union by Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez is not legal and that this is supported by a federal decision (un amparo) and the decision of three magistrates.  Mr Osorio Magana said that some problems have begun to arise in the Continental Zone that affect the interests of the union, and unfortunately, since Mr. Eduardo has no legal or representation, little has been done.
They have accused SINTRA  of authorizing permits to carriers (transportadoras) in Isla Blanca, which affects the members of the taxi union, taking work away from the operators and also devaluing their concessions. They said, "The authorities are taking advantage of the fragile legal status of Peniche Rodríguez and that is why we are here today."
They say that a legal alternative would be to obtain a legal decision (un amparo) against SINTRA and put a stop this situation. He said, "We are asking the Governor to comply with the rule of law and to call for new elections in the taxi drivers' union in Isla Mujeres."
He said if everything goes well, they hope to have new elections within a month and a half and elect a new board for the taxi union in Isla Mujeres.

Civil Defense responds to call about a swarm of bees on a catamaran
- http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/atiende-proteccion-civil-r…/

Around 1pm, Civil Defense responded to an emergency call from a catamaran crew that had just landed at one of the docks in Sac Bajo who reported a swarm of bees had gotten into the boat. They said they were in the area of Manchones reef when the bees arrived and went under the awning, apparently searching for shade. Fortunately, the tourists didn't panic and the bees didn't attack anyone. They continued on to Isla Mujeres and the tourists disembarked, who were mostly foreign, while the crew requested help from Civil Defense.
The intervention from Civil Defense lasted only a few minutes (in the video they are on the boat, spraying with a fire hose at a corner of the awning), and then the tourists were able to return to the catamaran.

This is about the lack of availability of medications at the Community Hospital, which are supposed to be provided for free to individuals with Seguro Popular insurance, and how this is difficult for elderly people with chronic diseases, like hypertension and diabetes, who lack the resources to purchase their medicines. The senior citizens interviewed in the article want the Governor to keep his campaign promises, including providing specialists at the Community Hospital, and other services that have not been activated.
