Port activity is estimated to have risen by almost 20 percent, and hotel occupancy is around 80 percent (in the municipality). The promotional efforts of the City of Isla Mujeres, led by the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, and in coordination with state and federal agencies, to encourage tourism to this Pueblo Magico contributes to a greater number of visitors arriving during the current summer season, which brings economic benefits to the families of the island.

Donated backpacks delivered to students in Francisco May
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/mochileando-cumple-su-meta…/
"Mochileando 2017" exceeded their goals by collecting and distributing 132 backpacks to rural children whose families have limited resources. The project was started by Isla Mujeres teacher Blanca Ochoa Gómez and her husband David Dzul Méndez, after they observed many children in rural communities carrying their school books and supplies in plastic bags.
They hoped to gather 100 new & gently used backpacks by setting up a collection center at their home in colonia La Gloria and inviting donations via social networks and among schools, businesses, and teachers. Donors were invited to include a letter of encouragement and support for the girl or boy receiving the backpack.
After a month, the collected backpacks were distributed to children in Francisco May, on the mainland part of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, as well as to to Popolá and Santa Rita in the state of Yucatán.
This was the first year for this successful project, which is expected to continue year after year, hopefully with more and more donations to support a large number of low-income students.

A "saldo blanco" on the beaches of the island and Continental Zone has been reported by those in charge of safety and security, which means there have been no serious incidents. Visitors are asked to comply with warning signs and advisories from lifeguards and other personnel to avoid risks to their personnel safety. Tourism service providers are asked to cooperate with the efforts to prevent tourists from swimming in unsafe areas, such as Media Luna Beach, where there are whirlpools and undertow currents.
It is also noted that staff with the Civil Protection agency will begin attending courses on Monday in first aid training, urban fire fighting, search and rescue, and evacuation of buildings. These four workshops will be taught by specialists with the National School of Civil Protection, and it will save time and money that they are coming to the staff to train them, rather than previously when personnel had to travel.

Reinforcement of the cemetery wall resumed
Reanuda reforzamiento de muro de cementerio. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Work has resumed on the cemetery wall, to reinforce the area where there is a small chapel building, to prevent further collapsing. This area is a few meters from the section that was rebuilt after collapsing in October. It is expected that more work will be done to reinforce the wall along the prolongation of Hidalgo street which leads to North Beach, because there are also cracks in this area. Many tourists walk thru this area and there are concerns that someone could be hurt if the wall were to fall.
Within solid structures, the steel deteriorates with the passage of time, and in some cases within two decades there is deterioration that causes weakening. There have been some accidents with no major consequences, and it is advised that public buildings receive maintenance to prevent accidents, including the two cemeteries, the tourist palapas, and the playgrounds & sports facilities.

Suspected beach thief has one foot out of jail
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/presunto-ladron-de-playas-…/

The situation has turned around 180 degrees concerning the suspect who was arrested and put in jail for allegedly stealing a tourist's possessions at the beach Thursday. The prosecutors confirmed that the victim came in, with the municipal police, but when it was explained to the tourist that his belongings would have to be kept under the protection of the prosecution, he decided not to continue with the complaint and that he'd rather take his possessions and leave the island than getting tied up in red tape. This changed the fate of the suspect who would now only be held for 36 hours, as established by law. It was not known if the judge would impose some sanction in addition to those 36 hours, which would be completed after midnight on Friday.
It is recalled that Adami Z.P.C., a 33-year-old waiter was arrested yesterday in the area of colonia Guadalupana (aka "La Invasion ") after being pointed out by Julio Cesar Patiño Chaires, a tourist from Pozarica, Veracruz, who chased the suspect in a taxi and called the police.  At first he intended to proceed and file a complaint with the prosecutors, but he changed his mind when he learned this would involve leaving all his belongings, including his cash. Indications are that the tourist came to vacation for only a few hours, and declined to spent the few hours he had in the middle of an investigation, so he opted to take his possessions and leave the island.
It is known that there have been several thefts in the area of the beaches, but the majority of victims are tourists who just came for the afternoon, so there are often no consequences. Now this detainee, who has confessed and handed over the belongings, is prepared to leave the prison after spending a day and a half in jail.

Giving up the Federal Zone
Desalojan zona federal . [+] Ver masFull article at this link

The members of the fishing cooperative "Por la Justicia Social" agreed to voluntarily vacate the area of Federal Zone, including the building and everything, which they had occupied since the 1980's. They held a meeting on Thursday afternoon whose main issue was the notification that the Sociedad Mercantil Inmobiliaria Ameyaltzin S. A de C. V.  was ready to move in. Notice was given to advise the members about the impending eviction from the property, which that company now needs to use.
Baltazar Gómez Catzin, (aka "Chayo") president of the cooperative,  explained that there is no problem with the concession, that they voluntarily renounced their rights, and are planning to deliver the facilities without any conflict between the parties involved.
He said, "We are aware that we ceded the property and that we must deliver it with all facilities as soon as possible. At a meeting of the cooperative members, the conditions were explained under which the cooperative operates and its transfer to another site, by the Makax lagoon. That company is the new concessionaire of the federal zone, of little more than 900 square meters, which is located on the avenue Rueda Medina, in front of the Harbor Master. We have a harmonious agreement with the Sociedad Mercantil Inmobiliaria Ameyaltzin S. A de C. V."
It appears that the company has made accommodations for the cooperative, allowing the fishermen to continue working during the remainder of this lobster catching season, on part of the property and letting them use the pier to bring in their catches, while the company continues their remodeling work.

Indignation

This has the same information as the TVIM article, noting that the tourist didn't file a complaint due to a lack of time, and that his returned possessions included cell phones, an electronic tablet, cash and personal items in a backpack. It says the alleged thief had fled in a white Corsa car. The news of his impending release has caused indignation on social networks, and where it is said that something needs to be done to prevent future cases of theft, which damage the image of this destination.

The board of the municipal Red Cross delegation has begun giving plaques to their benefactors, said Filipe Bierman, president of the organization. The first plaque was delivered to Zoetry at Hotel Villa Rolandi Isla Mujeres in Sac-bajo. On Thursday it will be given to a family from Chiapas, and next week, to the municipal government.  It is hoped that new forms of motivation will expand the number of benefactors in order to acquire financing for the services provided by the Red Cross. They hope to raise awareness about the need to contribute to this good cause, which works to save lives and provides care to those in need on the public roads and at public and private sites.
These plaques will be displayed in public areas of hotels and other businesses who are benefactors.

Tourist catches thief
TVIM reports that Mexican tourist Julio Cesar Patiño Chaires was at one of the busy beaches at the northern part of the island when his belongings were stolen while he bought snacks for his daughters. He spoke to the hotel employees, and learned who might have stolen his things, by hiding the suitcase under a towel. With information about the make of the vehicle and license plates, he got into a taxi and began pursuit until they arrived at colonia Guadalupania ("la Invasion") with the municipal police.
The tourist identified the vehicle, whose owner denied the accusations at first, but in the end he acknowledged having stolen the possessions, which included cash, clothes, and two cell phones.
The detainee, Adami Z.P.C, 33, who works as a waiter, was taken to the Prosecutor's office (la Fiscalía), and it is suspected that he may be linked to other thefts on the same beach.

Urban transport is needed
Necesario el transporte urbano [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The lack of urban transport service since 15 months ago is causing many workers to arrive late to work because taxi drivers prefer to pick up tourists, especially since the start of the summer holiday period. Those who suffer the most are families who try to go to the beach or to travel from one colonia to another to visit their friends, as well as those who go to shop in supermarkets. As a consequence of this, you can see women and children on foot walking long ways to and from the colonias to the beaches.
Also, those who arrive by boat have to deal with long lines at the taxi stand, waiting to be taken to their home, or in the case of visitors, to their hotels. There are certain times when taxis are especially scarce, such as shift change. Mrs. Eloisa Tun, who suffers on her return home in the intense heat after cleaning houses, says urban transport is needed. She and other residents want the Mayor and City Council members to attend to this need.
There was a proposal to create a paramunicipal company with an investment of two million pesos for a fleet of three minibuses, but this has not progressed, nor has the suggestion to use the two DIF buses to alleviate the situation.
