It is anticipated that before the end of this week the work will take place of
introducing the underground wiring that feeds the entire island,
which starts at one end of Playa Norte and goes to the substation of
the Federal Electrical Commission (CFE), beside the municipal cemetery. This is occurring after about five and a half months since there was a fault in this
electrical line which affected the entire population.
One
of the CFE workers explained they will be introducing guides into the
pipes which have been installed, in order for the cable to be
placed that supply all the houses rooms and businesses of Isla Mujeres. He said today
a crane and a truck will arrive with the new cable, so that on
Wednesday they can begin with the work of introducing permanent
underground wiring. It is not known how many days it will take to complete these jobs, but the intention
is that they finish once and for all so that the system of electric
power supply returns to the normal.
It is noted that the cables that feed the island of Isla
Mujeres are currently in the open and there is a risk that at any moment
they could be damaged, leaving the island without electricity service.

Working together to attract more tourists
The City and local entrepreneurs unite to attract a greater number of visitors to this Pueblo Magico. For two years, the designation of Isla Mujeres as Pueblo Magico has resulted in a
significant increase in the tourist economic benefits for the municipality. Therefore, the City, headed by municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, and the local
business owners work in a coordinated way to continue the growth and
development of the island, for the benefit of its inhabitants.
"Isla
Mujeres is one of the most important beach destinations in Mexico, not
only because of its beauty but also because of the recognition it
possesses - such as Pueblo Magico, Blue Flag, and White Flag - and, of
course, important events such as our famous fishing tournament," said the Mayor.
Local entrepreneurs commented about the economic benefits of increased tourism from having the Pueblo Magico designation, including Diana Martínez Márquez, general manager of the Posada del Mar Hotel, and Óscar Jiménez Cruces, owner of the restaurant "Mayan Beach Club".
For
the municipal government of Isla Mujeres, it is a priority to work
closely with local entrepreneurs to maintain these important designations, which have undoubtedly had positive results, with a 15% increase in the number of tourists compared
to last year. This statistic was provided by the State Department of Tourism and which endorses the commitment of the City to continue with the promotion of the municipality.
Isla Mujeres receives recognition as a Healthy Municipality
For its active participation in activities for the benefit of the
health of inhabitants, the City of Isla Mujeres, governed by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, received the recognition as a "Health Promoting Municipality", from the Ministry of Health of Quintana Roo. This reaffirms the commitment of the
current administration to continue working for increased and improved
opportunities for all.
This
was done as part of the "Healthy Environments and
Communities" program, whose objective is to foster environments,
communities and municipalities that favor health through the
participation of society, municipal authorities and other sectors. The designation was due to the effectiveness in the prevention of
diseases of the programs "For an Island Free of Dengue, Zika and
Chikungunya" and "For Responsible Management of Our Dogs and Cats".
Since the beginning of his administration, Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis has been promoting actions that ensure the health and safety of the islanders. He said, "We
are very proud to be distinguished as a 'Health Promoting Municipality',
which motivates us to continue reaching out to all the colonias and
communities of the island, the Continental Zone, the Agricultural Zone and
Francisco May, with our community care brigades, providing health services that have a direct impact on out inhabitants. Our
priority is that all citizens have quality, professional and continual attention."
The Mayor said, "The
well-being of the island families is our motivation, we want to see our
children happy, and women with medical coverage in the most important
stages of their lives. We want our older adults to have
medicines and health services that ensure their well-being."
ISLA MUJERES WILL BE THE SITE OF THE "2017 CECAFF LEAGUE COPA"
More than 200 soccer players, in 80 teams, are expected to participate in this event, the 2017 CECAFF League Cup, which will take place in Isla Mujeres on November 1 & 2 for the Center for Soccer Training League (CECAFF). This event promotes soccer for children aged 4 to 14, and the island community is invited to participate. The
center, based in Monterrey, was created with the purpose of training amateur coaches and
young players, in their different venues, and who are the 'seedlings' for professional teams.

CONANP will revoke whale shark permits from boats in poor shape
Insiste Conanp en que sí revocará permisos
The National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) will
revoke the permits of the whale shark tour operators who don't comply with the safety conditions to
operate. CONANP has given permits to 240 boats, however only 230 boats are carrying out
the tours, since the rest lack the minimum conditions required to operate. These deficiencies are serious and include boats that lack engines.
This week both agencies will corroborate all their information, and based
on this they will determine how many boats will lose their permits. This will release spaces for the permit holders who fully comply
with all the requirements.

Registration for the 5th edition of the English Summer Camp, promoted by the
VolunQuest association, will open on Monday, July 10 until June 28th at the Community Center. Kristen Tywan, who is responsible for the program, explained that this summer there will only be room for 200 children, between 9am and 1pm. Last year there were 230 children registered. The goal of the summer camp is to help children in different primary grades to learn English.
She said this effort is achieved thanks to the support of
volunteers from the United States and Canada who volunteer to teach and
help the children of Isla Mujeres. She said the camp will start Monday, July 10 and
conclude July 28, and includes some recreational activities. She explained that only children registered in a public elementary
school in the municipality of Isla Mujeres can enroll in the 2016-2017
school year. Regarding
registration, she explained that parents should go to the community
center on June 28 and 29, between 9a to 12p of the day and 6p and 8p hours to 20 hours, presenting a copy of the parent's voter registration card and the child's CURP card. .
Councilwoman offers free ultrasounds and x-rays at the Community Hospital
http://bit.ly/2uavFCk
A two day health campaign took place at the Community Hospital, due to efforts by City Councilwoman
Atenea Gómez Ricalde, with medical specialists from the company SIYS Soluciones, providing more than 100 people with free ultrasounds, 4D ultrasounds, X-rays and bone densitometries. The company also donated a newborn incubator to the hospital, with a value of 110,000 pesos.
On the first day of the campaign, they did 25 general ultrasounds, twelve prenatal ultrasounds,
twelve bone densitometries for osteoporosis detection, and four X-rays.
"We
are committed to health, and having the support of companies like SIYS
is an opportunity that we value a lot," said Ms. Atenea Gómez. She said on the second and last day of the campaign, about 45 people were attended to, of whom 23 received general ultrasounds, three prenatal ultrasounds, and ten bone densitometries. Ms. Gómez
Ricalde explained that the cost of a 4D ultrasound is 900 to 1100
pesos, while a regular ultrasound is 500 to 600 pesos, X-rays cost 800 to 1000 pesos
and bone densitometry is between 1,600 and 2,000 pesos.
CROC union said demand for labor continues
-
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/se-mantiene-demanda-labora…/
"The labor demand in Isla Mujeres continues to be maintained, but not at
the same pace as in November or December, but in a significant way," said Román Maldonado Euán, leader of the CROC labor union in Isla Mujeres. He explained that although the demand for jobs has decreased by 50
percent, job openings continue from the larger companies with whom the union has a collective
bargaining agreement. He said the jobs most in demand continue to be bartenders, waiters, and housekeepers.
He said although the labor demand has decreased, a major upturn is expected in July and August, during the holiday period. Another downturn is expected in September and October, but this effect is less each year. He said that
many of the companies decide to take those months to give vacations to
their workers and to make improvements in their business, preparing everything for the months of November and December.

There is an area of trash and overgrown brush where mosquitoes could breed, due to moisture left from recent rains. It is located in
an alley in the street Circuito Colonias, by the baseball field, near the police station. Residents in the area are complaining about a lack of lighting, graffiti, littering, and young people hanging out in the area. The fronts of their houses face Martinez Ross avenue and they say this green area lacks drainage. They say machinery should be brought in to clear the area of brush and trash, and a cement slab should be installed.
Lobster fishermen have good expectations
Langosteros, con buenas expectativas.. [+]

Fishermen are confident that this lobster season which is about could
at least match last season's production of 80 tonnes of whole lobster
and 12 tonnes of lobster tail, between the five cooperatives of the island.
Baltazar
Gómez Catzín, president of the Regional Federation of Fishing Industry
Societies in the state, said that as things stand, an excessively
productive lobster season is not expected. He said, "Poaching,
not observing the closures, and climate change are affecting the
behavior of the species. When the ban is not respected, lobsters
are caught that are full of roe, which then have no chance to develop. In addition
to the crustaceans are farther away and the fishermen have to travel very far to catch a medium amount of production, and they no longer have the catches of previous days, which have passed into history.
Regarding catching fish, Mr. Gómez Catzín said that after more than a week of
inactivity due to the closure of the port, the fishermen were able to work since Saturday, coinciding with the "Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña" Fishing Tournament. "Now they are arriving with fish. They are taking advantage of the
good weather, because at this season of the year, you don't know when conditions can change and leave you on land for several days".
The fishing boats began to return to the docks of their cooperatives after
noon and the men of the sea rushed to get the product from the boats for processing and sale later to customers, mostly individuals, and even tourists.
Mr.
Baltazar Gómez reminded the members of the fishing cooperatives that,
since the Hyperbaric Chamber is available for the fishermen as of July 1,
the day the lobster season starts, the contribution of 400 pesos per
month is important to sustain operating expenses,

No radiologist at the Community Hospital
Hospital Comunitario, sin radiólogo.. [+]

The Community Hospital has no radiologist and the X ray machine was installed incorrectly, therefore islanders needing X rays must cross to Cancun. It is also noted there is a lack of the promised specialists, and the hospital still lacks a pediatrician.
The Community Hospital has state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment,
which is unused, because there is no one who can operate
it.
There are concerns among the fishermen about the distance between the hyperbaric chamber and the new hospital, since the chamber was installed near the old hospital in order to stabilize the decompressed fishermen before using the chamber.
Regarding the X-ray equipment, from the beginning it was installed badly
and therefore it was as tho it did not exist. To top it all off, its
license is overdue so it could not offer X-ray service, even if the other issues were resolved.
When the Community Hospital was officially inaugurated, it was
announced that 101,331,000 pesos were invested in its
construction, with 83.5 million pesos were invested in the work and
the other 18 million was spent on equipment. The
official announcement indicated that the Community Hospital is equipped
with 13 beds, areas for emergency care, hospitalization area, operating
room, delivery room, recovery area, clinics, trauma room, hyperbaric
chamber, sterilization area and diagnostic service with digital x-rays, which have special walls, as well as ultrasound,
dental service, oxygen, cables for voice and data,
as well as areas for administration and medical residence area.
The annoyed mother of a two year old complained, "They
deceived us. When they opened the new hospital they told us that we
would no longer have to cross to Cancún, except when it was an emergency
or for something they did not have here. They promised us a lot of
specialists, but it was not true, and there is no pediatrician. Children should see a children's specialist, not a general doctor."

The 2018 XV International Sport Fishing Tournament "Cosme Alberto Martinez
Magaña" could be held in June next year, instead
of May, in order to avoid further cancellations by winds from the Southeast that prevail in that month, according to some members of the organizing committee. This was discussed by some of the participants and organizers.
There are 23 fishing tournaments in Quintana Roo, and 13 have been completed. The fourth women's fishing tournament in Isla Mujeres, "La Dorada del Caribe" has been rescheduled for August 5th and the ninth tournament "Barracuda Isla Mujeres" is scheduled to be held on August 15th.
The winds caused several tournaments to be rescheduled, and the schedule is HERE. The results of this weekends tournament are given, noting that 73 boats participated in this important international tournament, although more were expected. Forty eight fish were released in the catch and release event.

Martín Pérez Velázquez, 80, better known as "Burundanga", died this morning of natural causes. His friend brought him refreshments last night and a tenant representative said he had gotten weaker lately and died peacefully.
Mr.
Perez
Velázquez was a native of Tabasco, who arrived in the island in the early
1970's, in a plan to work with his colleagues who came from Yucatan. They began
roasting fish beside the market to sell to tourists. Shortly afterwards his companions left and he stayed to help the tenants.
So
he worked doing errands and cleaning of the premises for the occupants of the market, such as Mr. Clemente Azcorra (RIP),
Antonio García (RIP), the Parra family, and the Caamal family, among others. He continued to work for their children. Rafael
Garcia, one of the descendants, explained how they appreciated Burundanga very much, and he was like family to them.
Although
he didn't have diabetes, he had a foot amputated ten years ago after a
wound became gangrenous, and has been in a wheelchair since then. He
would always be at the door of the market "Javier Rojo Gómez" greeting the merchants.
He
does not seem to have had a family in his home state, and the traders of fruits and vegetables,
chickens, meats, and groceries became his family. He was available every day from when the building opened at 6am until it closed at 4pm, when the last merchants left. May he rest in peace.
