Boat contest for the Festivities for the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre

Con motivo de los festejos de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 25 de agosto.-

The prize for the best decorated boat will be 2000 pesos, with second place winning 1500 pesos and third place will receive 1000 pesos. The Church of Immaculate Conception announced that this contest is part of the festivities for the procession of the Virgin of Caridad de Cobre from Isla Mujeres to Isla Contoy, which is scheduled for September 12th.
The deadline to register is September 10, and the first 30 boats to register will receive a gasoline voucher worth 200 pesos. Owners of all types of boats are encouraged to participate including fishing, whale shark tours, sport fishing, and diving.
The procession for Our Lady of Charity will leave the concrete pier near the vehicle ferry terminal at 8am on September 12th, and people will gather an hour earlier, so they can call on the boat owners to participate with their families. (The Virgin of Caridad de Cobre is considered to protect fishermen, and they move her to the little chapel at their fishing camp at Isla Contoy, each year, to 'watch over' the lobster fishermen. There is a Mass and people often share food or 'picnic' before returning to Isla Mujeres.)

Although the tourism season ended on Friday,  hotel occupancy has remained above 50%, according to the municipal Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco, who said this indicates a good season. He is optimistic about the statistics and the lower occupancy that occurs in the upcoming months, noting that everything depends on the weather, and potential hurricanes affect occupancy.

    Helping conservation of sea turtles

0 26 de agosto de 2015  By Carlos Gasca

The Director of the Sea Turtle Conservation program on the island asked people to contribute to the protection of these endangered species and help with the work being done on the beaches. She said to achieve a flawless record for the release of hatchlings, it is necessary that the community also contribute and avoid the theft of eggs that are found on the beach. She said in these months, half buried eggs can commonly be found on the beaches, so it is important to cover them with sand, place a marker, and report them so they can be protected
She said although there are qualified personnel to do this work, they are often overwhelmed by the amount of turtles that come ashore on the same night. She said, "At times it is difficult and it is normal for a turtle to come ashore without supervision and deposit her eggs." If you find eggs, mark the spot and report it to one of these numbers:   9982250616, or 9981840096 or 9982155763.

Indolence by lanchero boats from P. Juarez
Indolencia por parte de lancheros[+] Ver mas
A tour boat for tourists, "Chan Jos", from one of the Puerto Juarez cooperatives, came ashore at Playa Centro (aka the Posada Beach) on Tuesday morning, and several tourist disembarked, with great difficulty, traversing the distance between the bow and the shore, including several children.
This is not allowed because of the danger it poses, and the Harbor Master, Miguel Ismael Gonzalez Gil, said this will not be tolerated. "All boats must dock at the piers of the Port Authority or at docks of an individual or of a cooperative, and if they do not comply they could face a fine and termination of their tourism permit due to offering services in an unauthorized area," he said.  He said during the holiday period, the Port Authority inspectors were assisted by five FIDENA cadets, who monitored that they vessels has the required safety equipment, current documents, did not exceed capacity, and were not outside the authorized areas.
He said they will not permit these situations and are emphasizing that this type of activity is not to be repeated, because if it is, a fine can be invoked from 3500 to 70,000 pesos, and their tourism permit can be revoked. He said, "I don't think it is worth the risk, especially considering there is an infrastructure of docks available on the island for loading and unloading passengers."  He said there are some captains in the tourism cooperatives of Puerto Juarez who prefer to unload their passengers on the beach to save paying the fee for the pier, which is around seven pesos per person.

While the municipal Director of Tourism reports that hotel occupancy is nearly 60%, the small hotels have 40% occupancy at best, and some have only three or four rooms occupied. The large hotels such as Ixchel, Aluxes, and Palace are at about 80 %, even though the holidays are over.  The Director of Tourism said, "There is still plenty of daytime tourism, but not overnight tourism. We have noticed that there are many Asian and African-American on the island." There are now golf carts available and the ferries are no longer running at 100 percent capacity as was seen in recent days. The beaches are still busy, and the hostels are enjoying good occupancy, which are the preferred lodging of the backpackers, who do not mind sharing a room or a bathroom.
