The Naval Search and Rescue unit located and assisted 12 Cubans aboard a makeshift boat, and then took them to Puerto Juarez and turned them over to INM (National Migration Institute) for processing. The 11 men and 1 woman were evaluated medically and hydrated before transport, and their human rights were respected at all times.

The Navy received a call from the captain of the vessel "Nordic Aky" reporting a boat that was adrift, containing 12 Cubans, located 75.9 kilometer (41 nautical miles) north of Cablo Catoche. Immediately the MLB rescue boat was dispatched to the area, and after working a search pattern, the boat was found in the afternoon, and those on board were rescued. This information was provided in a statement from SEMAR (Secretaria de Marina/Secretary of the Navy)

The rain yesterday was intermittent but intense at times, and interrupted tourist activities in general. However, despite the rain, dozens of visitors rented golf carts, and drove around the island, even though they were soaked at the end of the trip.
Several tourists who had come to the island in the morning were visibly angry, wondering if the rain would continue all day and not allow them to carry out any activities. Both visitors and islanders put on their raincoats, so that they could carry out activities around the island. There was flooding at several streets, mostly on Hidalgo which is a main shopping area.
Several tourists hat to walk through the water to gain access to the stores selling souvenirs, or simply because they wanted to walk down that street. Some tourists with suitcases were perplexed about which way to walk to the Maritime Terminal to take the ferry, because they wanted to avoid the flooded areas.

In the municipality of Isla Mujeres, there are 4461 students, whose classes resumed on Monday. A formal ceremony was held at the primary school Henry Estrella Oxte in Rancho Viejo, on the mainland part of the Municipality. Officials attended and the Director gave a speech of encouragement.
The Director of Basic Education for the Northern Zone of the state announced the delivery of computer tablets for all of the fifth graders, and the students responded with joy and enthusiasm. He explained that the devices are monitored and restricted so they cannot be misused, and are a technological tool for children in fifth and sixth grade to use for homework. Other officials were in attendance, who are named in the article.

The school year started off without problems, except two minor glitches which are expected to be resolved today. At the primary school "Andres Quintana Roo" they were lacking two teachers, for second and fifth grade, but the problem will be resolved today. The Director said only a few of the young students were absent, and the school day passed without incident.
At the primary school "Cesar Mendoza Santana" the Director Cristina Figueroa Medina said there were no students absent, but they were lacking a first grade teacher. Apparently this was the fault of the planning department who had omitted the existence of this class, which has been corrected.
- The torrential rains yesterday caused flooding at the intersection of Hidalgo and Abasolo, and in some other areas, including in front of the Municipal market and near the Monument to the Fishermen on Rueda Medina (main street).
- The staff of Civil Protection oversaw the operation of the pumps, but only one was functioning, because the other awaits connection to its new electrical transformer. The taxi drivers complained that the storm drains need better maintenance, since when they are clogged, it is difficult for the water to drain to the sea.
- The Harbor Master said sporadic, isolated rain showers are predicted for the next three days. (It rained last night and the sun is shining this morning w blue skies at 8:30a)

Expecting to break records this year for number of turtles released
The Director fo the Program for the Conservation of Sea Turtle, Raciel Rivero Coba, acknowledged that while there is ongoing, consistent monitoring of the beaches of Isla Mujeres, there will always be some nests that are missed, and there are many times when turtles dig up the eggs of other turtles. She said it is important to 'reinforce' the monitoring and to remove the eggs that are deposited by the turtles, so that they are not uncovered, causing interruption of their natural incubation.
She said that the Tortugranja has a total of 1261 nests of which three are Caray/Hawksbills, 61 are Caguama/Loggerheads, and 1197 are Blancas/Green turtles. At this time, there are 121,853 eggs that have been rescued, of which 331 are Hawksbills, 6,305 are Loggerhead, and 1197 (sic, that is the # of nests.doing the math that should be 115,215 eggs that...) are Greens. So far, they have released 33,000 hatchlings, which are 32 percent of the nests that have been protected.
She explained that although they have not scheduled any public releases, they have been releasing the hatchlings periodically. She said that if things continue as they are going, this will be one of the best seasons, with the release of more than 130,000 baby turtles. She said that last year, they released 64,989 hatchlings, and so far this year, they have already released 33,731 baby turtles.

The rain that fell just before noon on Monday caused brief outages ('cuts') in electrical service, and then the power was off at ~2p and returned after 35 minutes. There was a brief outage at 3p, and no problems thereafter. Restaurant employee, Alvaro Castillo, and hotel employee, Ulises Uribe, agreed that there were angry tourists, because they were hot. The rain caused some problems in the roads, especially in areas where there was standing water because the storm drains systems are poor, such at Hidalgo and Abasolo, where flooding generally occurs when it rains heavily.
Less rain fell than had been predicted, but bad weather with lightning is expected in the following hours (It rained last night). However the weather did not cause a problem in the tourism industry, even with the electrical outage, because summer vacation season has ended and there is a reduced number of visitors.
