While tourists arriving to Isla Mujeres are having an 'ordeal' (viven un suplicio) trying to find an hotel room, especially the hotels with the most stars, the municipal Director of Tourism reports occupancy is only at 83 percent. It was reported that July ended with an occupancy rate of 64 percent, while it reached 85 percent on Saturday, and was just under 80 percent yesterday.
When the reporter took a tour yesterday, several families of domestic tourists were seen seeking hotel rooms in the downtown area, and struggling to find any, before they managed to stay in one of them. Some of these tourists who are seeking a hotel in the downtown area said it didn't matter how much they have to pay per night, because they needed a place to stay before beginning to enjoy the recreational activities of their day. The downtown hotels that charge between 900 and 1500 pesos per night are full, and it has become difficult to find a room in this area, which is why visitors are out seeking a place to stay to enjoy this holiday destination.
Meanwhile, the municipal Department of Tourism reported that general occupancy was at 80 percent this weekend, although it seems like there was a lack of available hotel rooms downtown. This controversy is apparently caused because the hoteliers allegedly refuse to provide the actual information because of tax concerns. The staff of the Department of Tourism said they are limited by the fact that they provide the information they receive from the hotels.

A week after a Cuban boat landed on the coast of Isla Mujeres, without its occupants being detected, the handmade vessels remains on the shore with are no plans for its removal, and there is the threat of contamination from it. The Harbor Master said he does not have the staff and equipment, because they are currently dedicated to ensuring the safety of the visitors who are being transported in the boats for tourists. He put out a call for scrap dealers interested in doing the job, but none were interested because it is not profitable.

Como cada inicio de mes, para
promover el respeto y lealtad a los símbolos patrios realizamos un
homenaje con la presencia de funcionarios y empleados de la comuna.
At the beginning of every month, to promote patriotic respect and loyalty to national
symbols, we hold a ceremonial tribute in the presence of officials and
employees of the municipality.
There is a notice about bringing broken appliances and electronics to Mundaca thru August 28th, and one for Senior Citizens who may qualify to be beneficiaries of the 65 and older program, and one for the training programs offered by the Women's Institute for free (which I've posted and translated previously more than once). There's also a notice for IslaFest for the 165th Anniversary of the Foundation of the town. There is a copy below, in the Events section.
El
presidente municipal de Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magaña Sánchez anunció
que la comunidad de Francisco May contará próximamente con un
telebachillerato comunitario.
The State Government, through the state Department of Education and Culture (SEyC), is bringing the program of Telebachillerato schools to 16 locations in the state for the upcoming school year., which includes Francisco May. (In Mexico, Colegios Bachilleres are the public high schools. Public education 'basico' is completed with graduation from secundaria, which is similar to middle school. Francisco May is a rural community in the mainland area of the municipality of Isla Mujeres. I skip most articles about the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres, but include an occasional mainland article that I think ya'll might find interesting....and to let you know it exists.)
There are currently 37 high schools in the state meeting the demands in urban areas where the largest enrollment at this educational level is concentrated, however it is necessary to meet the needs of the rural areas.
The Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magana Sanchez, announced that the community of Francisco May will soon be benefiting from this system of tele-education. He said, "This is a wonderful option to overcome challenges, which will also promote equality and quality education in Franciso May." He explained there has been close coordination with the state government and its leader, Gov. Borge, to facilitate the upcoming opening of this tele-bachillerato campus to bring higher education to the Agricultural Zone of Isla Mujeres.
These tele-bachillerato campuses are being opened in communities where there are no high schools within 5 kilometers.

A carnival that was installed last month on a private property in colonia Amplification la Gloria is being evicted for allegedly not meeting the terms of the contract agreement, according to papers filed on July 27th, and Fausto Renán Ordóñez Pérez, who presented a copy of the complaint. The agreement had been for payment of 25 percent of the entrance fees, but the owners of the Nava Show have allegedly refused to pay.
It was expected that the carnival would remain on the island until after the celebration of the 165th anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres, planned for the 17th of this month. It is estimated that the company earned at least 250,000 pesos and the legal claim will proceed against the portion allegedly owed.
Peaceful day for tourists
Jornada turística tranquila.. [+] Ver mas
Monday passed peacefully without incidents, which was confirmed by representatives of the Harbor Master's office, the Red Cross, Public Safety (police), and the concession holders in the Federal Zone during a quick poll. Many people continued to go to Playa Norte during the afternoon, and there was more space available before noon, which happens daily during the summer holiday season.
The Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco, contacted the person responsible at the restaurant "Bally-hoo" regarding allegations about segregated seating areas for Mexicans and for foreign guests, who said he had no knowledge about this.
There have been complaints about the elevator being out of service in the parking area at Puerto Juarez, and there have been falls on some of the ramps that are worn, including by a prominent woman of the island, who received a bad hit when she fell at the bottom of the pier.
Benefit for children with Down syndrome

A representative of the altruistic foundation "El Coazon de Willito" said that children and young people suffering from Down syndrome and associated heart disorders who live in the municipality may receive assistance due to donations being collected Wednesday night at a circus event. The cicus BamBam of the Ramirez Brothers made an agreement with the organization, so that anyone attending the performance, which starts at 8pm, will be helping these special people. At this performance, there will also be a raffle for two passes for two persons to swim with the dolphins, donated by Dolphin Discovery.
The foundation has a comprehensive plan for meeting the needs of these children and youths, but the financial aspects are difficult and complex, therefore they seem means to find resources, and for this purpose they invite families to come and enjoy great entertainment while helping the cause. A mother of a child with Down syndrome said, "Given the importance of having sufficient resources to support these special people, organizers are calling on the community to attend this event and collaborate to assist the foundation."
Among the accomplishments of this foundation in recent months has been the initiation of a workshop for speech therapy, among other accomplishments in recent months. Members of the organization are grateful to the parents, volunteers, and other people who come forward to offer their support with donations, because only with community support with they be able to establish a permanent program.
The entrance to the circus is very accessible, (this means it is not expensive...the tickets are 50 pesos) so they are expecting good results from this campaign to help the health needs and special needs of these children and youths with Down syndrome.
Women's basketball league season begins
Arranca liga de baloncesto femenil. [+] Ver mas
Following the formal opening ceremony to launch the second season for the Liga Mayor Femenil de Baloncesto de Quintana Roo, The Cozumel Barracudas defended their title and defeated the Isla Mujeres Doradas. The Doradas of Isla Mujeres lost the first game to the Cozumel Barracudas 80-50 and they lost the second game 72-62.
The Marlins of Isla Mujeres played the Rebotera (rebounders) of Cancun on the downtown court of "Jose del Carmen Pastrana" where they showed their lack of experience and were defeated 73-37. It is noted that this team of islanders is competing in the league with younger players who are minors. They still can participate in the National Olympics, therefore this season is an excellent warmup for these young women, who will then have an opportunity to represent the state. The second game was a different story, as the Marlins hit the court with a new attitude and competed one on one with the team la Robotera, who have a combination of youth and experience in their roster. The second game ended 80 to 48.
The games between the Alphas and Stars of Cozumel were suspended and will be rescheduled, if necessary, later in the season. Next week the two islands of the state will have their own teams facing off against each other. The Marlins and the Doradas face each other in Isla Mujeres, while in Cozumel, the Barracudas will play against the Stars. The third series between the Alphas and La Rebotera will take place in the state capital.
