City Council Decision Regarding Red Cross First Aid Courses
At the 34th Regular Session of the City Council, they decided unanimously that the Mexican Red Cross will be the only institution providing first aid training to all the companies in the municipality. The Mayor said,
"For
more than 30 years the Mexican Red Cross of Isla Mujeres has provided
its services in this locality, always thinking about the good of all the
islanders. Now, among these services is the provision of first aid courses, through
which they can obtain some of the necessary resources to continue assisting the
inhabitants of this municipality for free. "
"The Mexican Red Cross offers a professional course, taught by
technicians who are properly trained in medical emergencies, who prioritize the
health of people and know that with the proper delivery of first aid can
save lives," said Juan Carrillo Soberanis. This
decision is part of the actions that the municipal government has taken
to maintain the safety and well-being of the islanders, in addition to
supporting this important institution which has provided its
services to the citizens of Isla Mujeres for many years.

municipality of Isla Mujeres
A delegation of tour operators of Chengdu, China, visited the
municipality of Isla Mujeres and were welcomed by members of the City Council. They are visiting the state of Quintana Roo in search of destinations with unique attractions and natural beauty, such as Isla Mujeres.
The Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco said that this interest by these Asian tour operators is a result of promotional work done by the Mayor since the beginning of his administration, which was supported by participation in the recent Tianguis Tourist Convention Acapulco 2017.
The General Secretary of the City Council, Joel Saury Galue, was representing the Mayor and thanked the Delegation of Tour Operators of Chengdú for their interest in learning about the attractions of the municipality and encouraged them to invite their fellow citizens to come and visit.
He said,
"Isla
Mujeres is a municipality full of history, beautiful landscapes which is growing and developing, with a great deal to offer entrepreneurs, investors and, of
course, tourists. This
is why all the municipal authorities are committed to continuing to work at the promotion and sustainable development of the island, because
we know that this will bring economic benefits for all island families."
Hundreds of children are expected to attend the celebration on Sunday at 10:30am of “Día del Niño”/
Children's Day at the green dome in Salina Chica by the El Pescador baseball field with a
show, surprises, and gifts, sponsored for free by the state and municipal DIF social service agencies.
"Children are the future of our municipality, so we must seek their well-being and take actions for their benefit. The
state and municipal DIF work together so that they can enjoy their day and have fun," said the honorary president of the Isla
Mujeres DIF, Paola Orrico de Carrillo.
The mayor attended the Plenary Meeting / Reunión Plenaria between the three levels of
government, in which he affirmed his commitment to work in coordination
with federal and state agencies offer improved and increased social
programs for the benefit of the islanders.
He said, "With the support of the Federal and State governments, Isla Mujeres will be able to have more quality services and programs which promote the economic and social development of families." The
island's mayor expressed his complete willingness to maintain this work so that more results can be provided in the short term for the
citizens, and in this manner to improve their quality of life.

Young islander speaks out against discrimination

Maisha Garrido Dietrich is a 12 year old from Isla Mujeres who attends César Mendoza Santana elementary school and speaks 3 languages. She wore her hair in
an immaculate bun as she opened the session of the Children's Parliament of the State Congress with a speech against discrimination. In an interview, she explained that she has personally experienced discrimination and has seen it affect her family.
She began with a poem Nezahualcóyotl (which is on the 100 peso note with his portrait):
I love the song of the mockingbird,
Bird of four hundred voices,
I love the color of the jade stone
And the enervating perfume of flowers,
But most of all I love my brother: man.
She closed her speech with a quote by Martin Luther King: 'We have learned to fly like birds, to swim like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living as brothers.'"
She attended the session as the child legislator for District 1 and allowed Grupo Pirámide to interview her during a recess:
-How did you prepare for this experience?
"I had the support of many people, especially my mom and my dad. I had support from my teacher and one of my aunts."
-Why did you talk about discrimination?
"I've experienced discrimination. I didn't like it and I wanted to raise my voice."
-Tell us about it ...
"It was very sad. They've made very bad comments and once they dragged me down onto the floor. They've even discriminated against my mother because of where she comes from. My mom is German and my dad is Mexican; I am half German and half Mexican, so I speak three languages: Spanish, English and German."
-What did you think of this experience and which legislator helped you?
"I
thought this experience was super. I loved it. It is a great
opportunity and I'm very happy to have been a part of the Congress of Quintana Roo.
I worked mostly with Alberto Vado Morales."
-What do you like to do in Isla Mujeres?
"I love Isla Mujeres.... the sea, school, my family, and I am enjoying my childhood."
-What message would you give to other children?
"Involvement in politics is important because you can raise your voice about an issue. If you have suffered something, you can raise your voice for someone to do something."
In the clip, she says she's happy to be there, representing District 1 and
that the fight against discrimination is very important because it
exists in the schools, streets, and many other places in Mexico &
that we are all equal, all human, and all living together in a world
that is full of discrimination.

Reviewing whale shark tour boats

The Harbor Master's office has inspected 50 percent of the whale shark tour boats to ensure that they have the safety equipment which is required by law, and the other boats will be reviewed before the start of the season. Since the end of 2016 and the start of 2017, the permit holders have been renewing their certificates of maritime safety and updating their insurance policies to provide coverage to passengers from May to September. In April, the permit procedures began for the authorities to issue consents to enter the permit areas.
There are a total of 304 permit holders, of whom 204 are located in Isla Mujeres and Benito Juarez (Cancun), which is the jurisdiction of the Isla Mujeres Harbor Master.
The Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) determines the dates for the start and end of the tour season, as well as other issues associated with the areas of the Aguas Verdes (Green Waters) and Aguas Azules (Blue Waters), which would be issued through the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and the
General Department of Wildlife (DGVS) for the declarations of the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve which converges in the same area.
The Harbor Master explained that it is uncertain whether the season will begin May 17 and end Sept. 17, and this is entirely up to SEMARNAT, as is the eventual modification of the management plan. Some environmentalists have proposed that the season be limited to the months of July and August, but he did not consider this to be justified, since only 40 to 50 percent of the fleet go out when there are fewer numbers of whale sharks in the sighting areas. However, their presence in the sighting areas has been recorded since January of each year.

The 49th edition of the Sol al Sol Regatta begins this Friday in St. Petersburg, Florida to sail more than 500 nautical miles to Isla Mujeres across the Gulf of Mexico. The sailboat "After You" will compete to defend its title with seven other boats, including “50/50”, “Equinox”, “I Believe”, “Its Only Money”, “Midnight Sun”, “My Time” and “Tattoo”. They are expected to begin arriving at the island on Sunday, although the strong winds from the south affecting the Gulf are not favorable for the sailors, and could delay their arrival until Monday. The boats can be tracked on the regatta website and activities are scheduled on the island.
The participants will have free days on the first and second days of May to visit island attractions, and the archaeological sites of Tulum and Chichen Itza. The traditional Captain's Cup will be held at the Casa de las Rocas at 1p on May 3, and at 7pm will be the basketball game between locals and the sailors. (
The article says it will be held on the court "José del Carmen Pastrana", but that court by the town square has been removed and there is just rubble there now. It is scheduled to be completed in June). The Special Session of the City Council in their honor will be held at Punta Sur on Thursday, May 4 at 5pm, or at the Town Hall, depending on the weather.
Participants for the 48th edition of the Regatta Amigos will gather at Buho's restaurant at 10am on Friday, and go to the boats a half hour later. These exceptional students from ages 8-12 will begin their tour around the island at noon. Also on Friday, at 7pm there will be a cocktail party and awards ceremony at Cabanas del Mar. On Saturday the participants and their families will depart.

This article is about yesterday's SCT weather report, which said conditions offshore were unfavorable for sailing by boats under 40 feet. The southeast winds of 30-40 kph closed the port for navigation by small boats, preventing fishing and tourist recreation outside the bay. The CONAGUA forecast indicated this could continue almost all weekend and may bring rain. This could reduce tourism on the long weekend. (Many children are out of school on Friday due to teacher's meeting and celebrating Children's Day, and Monday is an official holiday, Labor Day.)

On Sunday, the Velazquez-Celis family will commemorate the 20th anniversary of celebrating Children's Day together with a traditional children's fishing tournament that is held year after year on the pier by their palapa restaurant, along Rueda Medina. The purpose is to instill values in the children and promote a sense of family. It lasts an hour and is catch and release. There will also be a variety of games and an exhibition of boats made by hand from various materials including coconut, cork, wood, etc. Later there will be a sailing competition with these boats.
The extended Velazquez-Celis family will attend, including parents, brothers, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, with family guests coming from Holbox and Cozumel as well. The older aunts and uncles will be present, including Porfiria Velázquez, Juana Velázquez, Esteban Velázquez, Eusebia Velázquez, who will judge the boat competition. The head organizer of the family and main host is Don Fernando Velazquez.

Friday, April 7 Easter Vacation begins
On Good Friday, April 14, about 75 actors are expected to participate
in the reenactment of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, which is
part of the celebrations of the 500 years since Catholicism came to
these lands. This will be the 25th anniversary of this celebration of
the Passion of Christ in Isla Mujeres, and will include all the actors
who have played Christ over those 25 years.
Holy Week begins April 9th with Palm Sunday, with the blessing of the
palms and more emphasis will be given to the entrance of Christ (played
for the sixth time by Wenceslao Trejo Martinez) into Jerusalem, riding
on a small burro, as it says in the Scriptures.
A press conference was held about the event by parish priest Raul
Sanchez, who explained that more than 30,000 pesos are being invested in
the event, since it celebrates the 25 years of this event as well as
500 years since Isla Mujeres was encountered by Europeans, bringing
Catholicism. They are getting new armor from Guadalajara for the Roman
soldiers, and a renovation to the wardrobes of the main characters, so
they will look more professional and realistic, as well as the costs of
the burro.

north of Abasolo & the Cultural Center, on the west side of the
street. Sergio's impressive batik art can be seen, and purchased, at the
Thursday Artist Fairs. He also does murals & sign painting. We love
the mural he painted for us! His are will be featured and for sale at the restaurant all month.
Sunday, April 9 Palm Sunday
On Palm Sunday at 9:30am, a procession will reenact the triumphant
entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, by walking from Playa Centro to
the Town Square, where a mass will be celebrated in front of an audience
which is expected to be ~1000 Catholics. Fifty people
will participate as actors and 20 will be in charge of logistics.
Another reenactment of the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem is
scheduled for 7:30pm from the tourist center at Mundaca Hacienda to the
Sacred Heart Church in La Gloria, where Mass will take place.

Stations of the Cross . On Friday, reenactment of the ViaCrusis (passion play/stations of the
cross) will start at 10:30 (at Sacred Heart) and join the other group at
the Guadalupe Chapel (overlooking the Caribbean in Salina Chica) and
they all will go together for traditional walk to downtown, which is
four kilometers
finishing on the Town Square at 3p with recreation
of the crucifixion of Christ.

Action for Isla
To everyone who loves Isla Mujeres,
Action for Isla would like to cordially invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual Earth Day Isla Mujeres Dive Against Debr
is
Event on April 22, 2017. The main objective of the event is to perform a
cleanup of the docks and beaches of Isla Mujeres in order to give back
to the community and the island that we all love and enjoy.
Last year’s event was a raging success, over 60 volunteers on land and
sea collected more than 650kgs of trash in the space of an hour and a
half, including 425 glass bottles, 87 snorkel tubes, 6 car and tractor
tires and a supermarket shopping cart. We hope to make this year even
bigger!
The main reason for this letter is to invite you to
participate and support the cause. This event consists of teams of
certified divers, support snorkelers and spotters on land that will
remove trash from the areas under the docks from the Adolfo López Mateos
dock to the dock of the restaurant Velazquez. Volunteers on the beach
will assist in the separation and classification of waste. Additional
volunteers and the schools of Isla Mujeres will facilitate a
simultaneous cleaning of the beaches and boardwalk (Malecón) area and
beaches of downtown (Centro) that same day.
In addition to
cleaning, we will hold a raffle to raise funds for improvements in the
area of the National Park and actively contribute to the organization
Project AWARE, which aids in organizing such events worldwide and is
currently supporting the logistics of this event. Furthermore, we will
document and report the classification and total weight of all debris
collected from these two areas to assist Project Aware in their ongoing
research regarding marine conservation.
We will provide gloves
and lunch for participants as well as large water dispensers, please
bring your own refillable water container as it is Earth Day and we
would like to promote reducing, reusing, and recycling.

*If you wish to dive to collect debris please ensure you are Advance
Open Water certified and contact us as soon as posible, there is a limit
on the number of divers we can have based upon the available gear.
Please bring your own snorkel gear if you have it. ALL DIVERS AND
SNORKELERS MUST ATTEND AN ADDITIONAL SAFETY BRIEFING THE EVENING BEFORE
THE EVENT.
**The in water clean-up will begin at 8:00am (divers
and organizers meet at 7:30am) the event will continue until 2pm to
factor in the time for sorting the trash, and then the raffle will take
place. Cleaners and volunteers may come at any time but we ask if you
would like to volunteer at the stands please contact us and ensure you
can show up at 8am to help with set-up. Thank you!
There are many
volunteer positions available for this project and if you can help in
any way, big or small, please contact us! We are excited to not only
clean up trash from our beaches and public areas, but also to involve
community members in our ongoing efforts to contribute to the health and
wellbeing of our beautiful Isla Mujeres.
