Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

   Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, said various government agencies have worked since the beginning of the Carnival to keep the municipality clean.       He said, "It is important to maintain a good image of the island, because both those who live here and those who visit us deserve to be in a clean and safe place."
          The Director of the Department of Public Services reaffirmed his commitment to care for the island through actions such as the increasing personnel and routes for the collection of garbage, and he invited the islanders to help maintain this work.
        Keeping the municipality clean during Carnival, and the rest of the year, is the work of everyone, because the benefit is for all the inhabitants, but mainly for those who participate in this great tradition.
          "A good image is important to maintain the name of Isla Mujeres as one of the most important tourist destinations in Quintana Roo and Mexico. The economy of the island families depends on the work that the community and the government do together for our municipality," concluded the Mayor.

Enthusiastic and colorful Sunday parade
   There was rhythm and color at the second (sic) parade for Carnaval Isla Mujeres 2017 in which 19 dance troupes and 7 floats participated, on Rueda Medina Avenue, which was enjoyed by hundreds of people, tourists and residents alike.
    Municipal President, Juan Carrillo Soberanis and his wife, Mrs. Paola Orrico of Carrillo, participated in the event and joined the kings and queens, keeping alive this tradition that brings together island families who gather to enjoy the presentations of the dance groups and the activities prepared for the occasion.

Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, said various government agencies have worked since the beginning of the Carnival to keep the municipality clean.

Hotel occupancy is nearly 90 percent, which is partly attributed to the Carnaval celebrations. However, this doesn't include the houses, apartments, and condominiums that are not registered with the Ministry of Finance to contribute to the 3% tax.
      On Sunday morning many tourists could be seen arriving to the island aboard ferries and the boats that depart from the Cancun Hotel Zone offering package tours. Many people were seen on the beaches. The municipal police were carrying out walking patrols on Rueda Medina which is decorated for Carnaval. There was a stage installed, and a tent selling micheladas, to the delight of locals and tourists who enjoyed the drink prepared with beer and different spices.
   Some handicraft sellers complained that sales were a little low, but they expect them to improve during the Easter holidays, when demand increases because domestic tourists are the best buyers. Although they generally don't buy the more expensive items, they buy a pile of souvenirs to give away.

The port remained open on Sunday without restriction, but it could be closed for boats under 40 feet on Monday, if the winds increase. It is possible that activities within the Bay could be allowed, for the cooperatives that sell tours to El Farito and the lagoon area.
    As usual, at the north point of the island, several boats of different sizes were anchored near the coast, at a distance sufficient to not pose a risk to the swimmers. There were many loungers and umbrellas at Playa Centro, which is a Blue Flag beach and must offer free services to users. Islanders complain that they are gradually losing the only really public beach they have left to enjoy, with the proliferation of loungers and umbrellas, as well as massage beds.

Electrical work continues

   Businesses located near the trenches dug by the CFE to install new electrical lines have had their sales decrease and tourists have been inconvenienced. It was originally projected that the work would be completed by February 15.
      When the electricity failed on January 15, the CFE responded immediately and established a provisional line within two days to supply energy for the island while the repairs are being made. Two lines are being installed so that if one should fail, the other will be operational to prevent the people suffering any further cuts in power.
           If things are done as announced, it will be worth all the inconvenience caused by the work, which is ultimately for the benefit of the island, its inhabitants, and the tourists who visit.
