ISLA MUJERES, 23 de febrero.-
The Visitaduría Adjunta with the State Human Rights Commission (CDHeQRoo), Martha Patricia Puc Laines visited the Community Hospital, as part of a tour to investigate the quality of service and care at hospitals throughout the state. She found three important shortcomings that prevent optimal care for the patients.
She said the Community Hospital needs more specialists, including doctors of Internal Medicine, a radiology technician, and pediatricians. She said the cause of the lack of specialists is the low pay for the contracted personnel.
She said the number of nurses is insufficient with only 16, while about 80 are needed. She said there is a need for medications, which currently only meet about 60 percent of the demand of the patients who come for a consultation. She said the administrative staff should receive training on how to deal with people.
She concluded that the Community Hospital can be considered as a "white elephant" because there are many areas that are well equipped, but which do not function because of a lack of personnel.

Two young men are in serious condition after being in an accident last night
Delicados los dos jóvenes accidentados anoche en Isla Mujeres - https://goo.gl/JhDop6
Two young men are in serious condition after being in an accident last night on the western coastal road at the section known as "Devil's Curve". A little before midnight, the police and Red Cross received a call for help, because two people, one on each motorcycle (uno en cada motocicleta), had been injured in an accident. When the Red Cross arrived, they found one of the motorcycles, an Italica, laying in the road, and beyond it were two injured persons.
One had an injured thorax and the other had an injured leg, and they were immediately transported to the Community Hospital, but little could be done for them there. It was decided to transport them to Cancun for specialized care. The names of the injured are Francisco Javier Hernandez Gonzalez, 29, who is originally from Campeche and Henry del Carmen Hernandez Mendez, 18, who is originally from Chiapas.
Due to the seriousness, personnel from the Mexican Navy based in Isla Mujeres assisted with the transport which was done in the "Defender" type boat of the ENSAR (Search and Rescue Station), which took the injured men to Puerto Juarez. At 5am they were put into a Red Cross ambulance to receive further medical care in Cancun.

Investigating allegations of fraud against a golf cart rental company
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/investigan-presunto-fraude…/
The Director of Tourism filed a complaint with SINTRA alleging possible fraud by the business "Isla Mujeres Golf Cart Rental", which offers golf cart rentals via the internet. The complaint indicates the representative for the business is Alejandro Gaitan Burns. The business has a storefront in colonia Salinas, where the logo of the business is on the facade, but it appears this is not where the golf carts are provided.
The complaint alleges that tourists have been defrauded repeatedly, because when they arrived to the island and wanted to obtain the golf cart they had previously rented, they did not receive it and on some occasions the money they prepaid was not refunded. Attached to the complaint was an incident report-complaint from a tourist with a payment receipt from the hotel "Cinco Caballos". The complaint was filed with SINTRA, who are now aware of the issue. (SINTRA is the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation)

Councilman complains about SINTRA delegate
Conflicto de intereses en Sintra. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Councilman Roberto Martinez Aragon is chairman of the Transport Committee, and he said the City Council should create a Transportation Regulation. He accused the SINTRA (Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation) delegate, Jorge Miguel Martin Alvarez of a lack of impartiality and a conflict of interest, and wants him removed from his position.
He said there should be a initiative of law or a modification to the Transport Law so that when a golf cart concession is granted, it is analyzed by the City Council, who should have the last word. He said concessions have been granted right and left, which is causing an overpopulation of vehicles in Isla Mujeres. He explained that the problem is with the state government, who grant the concessions, and have not been concerned about this, and now we are the ones who are suffering.
He said this would just be the tip of the iceberg to curb the excessive saturation of the public roads, because there are taxis operating on the island who should be working in the Continental Zone.
He said the SINTRA delegate should work against the 'pirate' golf carts which are rented without a plate, or with just one plate, or with private plates, including carts that lack the logo of the rental agency. He said the police Traffic department should also participate.
Tourists enjoyed beaches despite cooler temperatures

Although it was cooler on Thursday morning, with temperatures of only 21C at 7am, the beaches had a good presence of tourists later, when the temperature rose to 28 degrees. (70F and 82F). There were some vendors on the beach and a businessman complained about the unfair competition and that they are not supposed to be allowed on the beach with its Blue Flag certification. He also wants the mobile vendors removed from Rueda Medina avenue.
39 fishermen have suffered decompression illness
Van 39 pescadores descompresionados.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
With less than a week before the end of the lobster catching season, 39 fishermen have suffered from decompression, and unfortunately, one is deceased. The president of the Board for the Hyperbaric Chamber, Baltazar Gomez Catzin, said it would be ideal to have a doctor who lives on the island, rather than depending on someone living in Cancun. He said the Chamber should be closed for the next four months, when there is a ban on lobster fishing, but sometimes it is used for a tourist with decompression or to treat diabetics with foot wounds.
He said, "Now there are problems were didn't have before when the hospital was just a few meters away. Then, when a fisherman arrived in serious condition, he was first stabilized at the hospital, and then treatment was given in the chamber according to the type of decompression." He said with the hospital so far away, patients who need hyperbaric treatment suffer from the transport. He said it is recommended that the Hyperbaric Chamber be installed in the Community Hospital. In one of the visits of former Governor Roberto Borge, he announced that a hyperbaric chamber would be acquired at the hospital, but this hasn't occurred.
Sr. Gomez Catzin said unfortunately the Board does not have enough money to pay for a doctor who lives here to provide support any time day or night, in addition to paying operating expenses.
On another topic, he said the fishing industry has been paralyzed by bad weather lately and although the port reopened on Thursday, many of the fishermen stayed in and may be able to go out on Friday. He said "We hope that in the few remaining days before the closure begins that they can harvest more than a ton of live lobster, so that production would be approximately on par with last season.
