A series of activities are planned for March 3-5 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first encounter between two cultures when Spanish sailors first came to Isla Mujeres. Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis has invited the Government of Spain to participate with the presence of artists during these dates, via Ambassador Luis Fernandez-Cid, of las Alas Pumarino.
"We commemorate five centuries since the first meeting between the Spanish and our ancestors, which began a cultural exchange that gave rise to the mestizaje and to the identity of our people today, which is the result of a mixture between two cultures," said the Mayor. He said it is important to this administration that the young people are aware of the sources of their cultural heritage. He said that during this 500th anniversary of the first sighting of the island by Iberian sailors, the Spanish Government has been invited to participate in this important event.
And as part of the commemoration, the Island City Council has sent a letter of intent to the Spanish Government to sign a twinning with Puerto Santa Maria of Cadiz, where the crew departed from five centuries ago to Isla Mujeres for the first time, and they were the first to name the island, due to various female sculptures found here.
Continuing with the historic, cultural and artistic legacy of Isla Mujeres is one of the main functions of this municipal government, for the pride of the islanders, said Carrillo Soberanis, who also invited the community at large to participate in the commemorative events.

Arturo Cutz Cardenas, whose car burned Friday when it was parked near the post office, has filed a complaint with the Ministerio Publico (Attorney General)'s office to initiate an investigation and find who was responsible for the fire. He believes it may have been done to intimidate him because he has been complaining for a long time about noise pollution from live music 15 meters from his house, which affects his family.
The fire occurred around 4am and was put out by the fire fighters of Civil Defense. He said he hopes they find whoever is responsible because he worked hard to obtain this car and he uses it to deliver food from their  home, which is located on north Hidalgo. He had parked it near the post office because of work being done by the CFE to renew their underground lines.
