In order to guarantee the good image of this holiday destination, with clean streets and beaches, municipal government agencies redoubled their efforts in order to provide efficient service of garbage collection and cleaning of the coastal zones, with the assistance from  the personnel of ZOFEMAT (Federal Maritime Coastal Zone ) and the Department of Public Services.
The commitment of the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, to the care of the coasts and ecological environment was decisive for the ratification of the "White Flag" certificate for North Beach Playa, one of the most representative sites of the Island. This will be valid during the period 2016-2018. The certification is in accordance with the criteria of  the law NMX-AA-120-120-SCFI-2006 which includes criteria the water cleanliness and the quality of the destination, among other things.

For its part, the beach (formerly known as the Posada Beach), Playa Centro is certified with the "Blue Flag" designation, awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education to beaches and marinas that meet established criteria of quality, safety, education and environmental information.

Both designations are a result of the actions undertaken by the municipal administration, in order to keep Isla Mujeres sustainable; That is to say, to continue the development of the basic economic activities, such as tourism, without affecting the natural environment.

It is important to mention the commitment of the personnel of ZOFEMAT and of the Public Services Department in regard to  cleaning up the beaches and streets, so that visitors and islanders can enjoy better spaces.

A cold front that is affecting the Gulf of Mexico is expected to cause a drop in temperatures in Isla Mujeres on Saturday, but the winds are not expected to be as strong as the last front. There port is expected to remain open for small boats.
The weather was good on Friday and there was a good level of tourist activity with about 10,000 visitors enjoying the crystal clear waters, beautiful beaches, and attractions of the island. On land, they rented 600 golf carts, hired hundreds of taxi drivers and scooters, and in the water, more than 100 boats were active in the Bay.
Public Service officials said they are still struggling with effects of years of neglect, but they are improving services day by day. They are determined to improve the image of the island. They recognize that it will be necessary to completely renew the trash fleet, which will be taken care of as soon as possible.

This article (LINK)  says An orca was seen off the coasts of Isla Mujeres
It says...The sighting of an orca, a species that is also known as a killer whale, near the coast of Isla Mujeres was a surprise.
According to information released by Miguel Ángel Canseco, Public Relations Officer of the Mexican Association of Habitats for the Interaction and Protection of Marine Mammals, AC, (AMHMAR), this is not the first time these animals have been observed in The Caribbean Sea, because they adapt to different environments and food sources
Orcas are marine mammals belonging to the Delphinidae family (the same group as dolphins). There are more than 10 varieties or "ecotypes" of this species, which can be found in seas and coastal areas around the world, but they are more abundant in cold areas.
Orcas are predators at the highest level of the food chain, who perform different hunting strategies. Their diet consists of about 140 species that include other marine mammals such as seals, sea lions, dolphins, otters; sea turtles, dugongs and seabirds like penguins. For this reason, they have been nicknamed killer whales.
On January 24, a whale shark swam in water near Cancun which was surprising because this in not the season when they are normally seen.
