The government of Juan Carrillo Soberanis reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of children and youths 
Reafirma compromiso el gobierno de Juan Carrillo Soberanis con la protección de la infancia y la juventud

"A country, a state or municipality without a healthy childhood is destined to fail, to socially decompose," said the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis as he presided over the installation of the System of Legal Protection of the Rights of Children and Adolescents.The Mayor, who was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Paola Orrico de Carrillo, said that with the installation of this agency in the municipality, there is now a department that attends to children and adolescents to ensure that their rights are not violated. The Mayor said,  "Isla Mujeres, fortunately is a small municipality which has a healthy society for the development of their childhood and youth, but this does not exempt the authorities from their responsibility in the care and protection of them." He said that any resident who sees a child in a situation of risk, which may violate their physical and psychological integrity, must protect them and complain, if there is any probable criminal situation, because there is nothing more vile than someone who threatens the integrity of someone who cannot defend themselves.The Mayor emphasized that his government is committed to the protection of children, youths and vulnerable groups in general,  "So that in the future, they will be good people; but above all, it is for their benefit to grow up in a happy environment, with access to education, health, and good treatment from their parents and by society as a whole. "

The New Generation Cahuameros lost Saturday's basketball game (81 to 40) and won Sunday's game (82-65) against the Dorados of Playa del Carmen. This was only the Dorados second loss out of 22 games while the Isla Mujeres team have had 15 wins and 7 losses. The Playa del Carmen team are in first place while Isla Mujeres is in second. Next weekend the Cahuameros will be in Cozumel, playing their team, Los Islenos, who are also contenders for one of the three spots in the Semi Finals.

Ultramar hurting tourism

 Just before Christmas, Ultramar raised their rates for domestic and national tourists by 22 percent, from 164 pesos to 200 for a round trip, and now it has raised this to 300 pesos, which is 'an unprecedented event.'.  The company (nearly) doubled the rate, with the arguement that the price of gasoline has increased over 20 percent. Entrepreneurs are complaining that this will cause less tourists to arrive in upcoming months.
   Members of business and hotel organizations are asking their representatives to request that authorities intercede and ask the company to reconsider the rate. Entrepreneurs say it is not fair that Ultramar charges the same rate between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, because that distance is more than twice as far, across rough seas, compared to crossing to Isla Mujeres in the Bay. They consider this abusive and they want authorities to intervene. Those who were angry and expressed themselves on social media included Juan Carrillo Padilla, whose grandson is the Mayor, with the same name.
   The crossing to Cozumel is ~20 kilometers from the beach, and from Puerto Juarez to Isla Mujeres is 6 to 8 kilometers of calmer waters.
       Between Puerto Juarez and Isla Mujeres, the current rate for domestic and international tourists is 160 pesos / one way and 300 pesos / round trip, and for children it is 130p / one way and 250 pesos / round trip. For the Quintana Roo Plan is 78p / one way and 148p / round trip, with children at 46p / one way and 84p / round trip, which is more expensive than the route between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. You must prove your state residence by having your voter's card.
   The local plan remains the same at 42p / one way and 84p / round trip, with children at 16p / one way and 32p / round trip; and seniors 26p / one way and 52p / round trip.
   The rates for Cozumel are similar with 163p / one way  and 300 / round trip, for children it's 97p / one way and 194p / round trip. The Quintana Roo Plan is  70p / one way and 140p / round trip. Children are 30p / one way and 60p / round trip. First class is 220 pesos / one way and 410p / round trip; Peninsula Plan is 115 pesos / one way and 220p / round trip; Children are 60p / one way and 100p / round trip; while seniors are 60p / one way and 100p / round trip.
   Since the other ferry company in Isla Mujeres discontinued service over a year ago, residents have been unhappy with the lack of competition and some complain that the service is poor and not equal to the prices.

  It also says the DIF, social service agency  is conducting a campaign among schoolchildren for the prevention of addiction including specialists and representatives of institutions dedicated to rehabilitation, sharing of experiences, and prevention. The National Council Against Addictions (CONADIC) says that the rate of alcohol and drug addiction in 11 to 17 year old youths is high and work should be done on prevention of the problem in the age group.

  This information about the inauguration of the Second National Artisan's Fair has already been translated.
    It also notes that this annual organization of this fair, to promote Mexican culture, has generated a lot of empresarial enthusiasm. Recognition was also given to the local artisans participating, who have had frequent successes at state and regional competitions and whose talents include carving shells, carving palm tree products, wood, and painting on canvas, among other techniques. In addition to this fair, there is a regular exhibition that has featured participation by foreigners at Casa de Cultura.

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Yoga at the Casa Cultura on Monday & Wednesday mornings at 9am and Tuesday & Thursday evenings at 6pm. On the back street, Guerrero, at Abasolo.
