Last weekend, Isla Mujeres received the highest number of tourists during the summer holidays with nearly 20,000 visitors arriving on Sunday, which is twice the number usually recorded in high season. The head of the Port Authority, Jasmine Perez Gaytan, said this is an historical number of tourists, with 19,300 passengers arriving on Sunday. She said there have been more visitors coming to the island this summer, with ~238,000 passengers crossing, which means an increase of 57,600 over the year before. (She is referring to arrival statistics for the month of July, 2015. Also, during the first seven months of this year, there were ~1.3 million arrivals, which is ~253,000 more passengers than last year. LINK.)
She said more than 90 percent of the tourists arrive from the passenger piers of Cancun and Puerto Juarez, as well as the vehicle ferry in Punta Sam, in addition to those who arrive via private vessels and boats from marinas. It is noted that Ultramar and Magana are the principle ferries serving Isla Mujeres, and the rest of the visitors arrive on tours offered by the cooperatives from Puerto Juarez, and from marinas that provide service to the beach area, as well as on the vehicle ferry.
Hotel occupancy is above 80 percent according to the municipal Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozoco, who says this level of occupancy has been maintained for at least three weeks. He said Isla Mujeres is no longer a destination that can be seen in a day, since there are a large number of attractions to visit. The hotels reported occupancy of 82 percent, noting most guests are staying on the island for three or four days.

It is hoped that there will be substantial improvements in the future at Mundaca Hacienda, where important work is being carried out by the INAH, National Institute of Anthropology and History. A wall has been constructed around the perimeter and a space created for a different entrance with a tourist center.
But workers say very few tourists visit the property because many aspects need renovation and have a poor appearance, noting there are cracked walkways, shabby lights, and overgrown weeds. They say the entrance fee of 20 pesos or two dollars per person is not justified because of the poor state of many things that need attention.
One worker said that in the past, hundreds of tourists visited daily, because it was attractive with clean walkways in good condition and information was available. But now everything has suffered from a high level of deterioration over the years, and it has been a long time since any significant investment has been made.

Continuing an open door policy to cities all over the world, Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo and the city of Mission, Texas, affirmed their twinning at noon on Saturday. The Mayor of Mission, Norberto "Beto" Salinas, and the Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magana Sanchez, said that with this agreement, there will be more opportunities to exchange assistance and promote their destinations.

Isla Mujeres signs its 13th Sister City agreement

In addition, it says that the first twinning agreement was signed in 1988 with Habana Vieja (Old Havana) and the Province of Matanzas, Cuba.
The other Sister City agreements were:
In 2001, with Viña del Mar, Chile, and Mar de Plata, Argentina.
In 2009 most of the twinning agreements were with Mexican Cities: Partido de Lanús, Ciudad de Chascomús, Ciudad de San Juan, Florencio Varela and Partido de Almirante Brown.
In 2010, Quilmes.
In 2012, San Petersburgo, Florida. (sic)
And last year (2014) Pensacola, Florida.
There is a goal of giving an economic advantage to Isla Mujeres within this list of agreements, especially with the American cities, in investment in tourism promotion. With Cuba, there is an agreement to exchange information, research, and experiences in sustainable fishing and aguaculture, and with Argentina to exchange investments and tourism, but no progress has been reported in these areas at this time.

But not all sectors experienced good sales, such as restaurants, according to Baltazar Maldonado, head of CANIRAC in Isla Mujeres (Cámara Nacional de la Industria Restaurantera y Alimentos Condimentados). He said, "For us this season was not good, the number of people did not generate revenue for us." He said restauranteurs managed to meet their expenses for rent, personnel, and other costs, but in the most difficult period of the year, September, October, and November, sales fall off to the point of being unable to pay the basic costs.
Around the island, a good number of visitors are seen, including on the beaches, on the coastal roads, and at the attractions like the Sculpture park at Punta Sur, and at the Tortugranja in Sac Bajo, where visitors can learn about and observe the breeding cycle of turtles.
