ISLA MUJERES, 16 de agosto.-
Many Island families and tourists enjoyed the weekend of entertainment and presentations that were part of the celebrations of the 165th anniversary of the founding of the town. On Saturday, at the traditional Town Square, there was a colorful and exciting Regional Night event, led by the Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez and his wife, Marthy Vargas Leon de Magana. The entertainment was provided by the folclórico group “Costumbres y Tradiciones de México” (Customs & Traditions of Mexico), the dance troupe “Amigos de Isla Mujeres” (weet laak ‘il) (Friends of Isla Mujeres) and by the “Mestizas de Agua Salada” (Salty Water Mestizas). All three groups gave performances that were skilled and professional, and the dance numbers included: “El Torito”, “La Mestiza”, “Mujeres que se Pintan”, “Aires Yucatecos”, and others. The Ambassadora (Queen) of the Festivities, Citlali Alessandra Parra Rosado, was featured in a performance of regional dancing with the folklorico group "Customs and Traditions of Mexico".
Afterwards, a mass was offered outside the Immaculate Conception parish building by Monsenor Fabio Martinez Castilla, and hundreds of parishioners participated in the procession and returning of the icon of the Virgin to her niche.
The celebrations continued on Sunday at the Town square with splendid performances by the  “Ballet Folclórico de Quintana Roo”, accompanied by the “Orquesta Polifacética” orchestra of the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. A regional ballet "Añoranzas de Isla Mujeres" was performed and closed the weekend.
On Monday afternoon, there will be a Public Session to commemorate the 165th anniversary of the founding of the town, during with the Medals of Merit for Citizenship and for Tourism will be awarded to islanders for their contributions to the development of the municipality.

ISLA MUJERES, 16 de agosto.-
The amphibious chair in use at the Playa Centro, aka the Posada Beach, has been well received by visitors with special needs and is a resounding success. It is one of the requirements for "Blue Flag" status, which also includes monitoring water quality and providing services including trained lifeguards, bathrooms, parking, showers, buoys, and security.
The water chair is available for use by tourists or residents with disabilities, so they may enter the sea. According to the staff of the Federal Zone agency (ZOFEMAT), if there is a demand, more chairs could be obtained to meet it.

Whale shark tour operators pleased

ISLA MUJERES, 23 de agosto.- (sic)
After suffering for nearly a month, the whale shark tour providers are more than happy, because now they are seeing hundreds of whale sharks, accompanied by giant manta rays. Martin Trejo Manzano said they have seen groups of 250-300 whale sharks, noting that their presence near Isla Mujeres is associated with their diet, since they come to this area to eat plankton. He said they are a peaceful species who are not afraid of humans, which motivated islanders to swim with them, and then to bring others.
There are about 170 licensees of Isla Mujeres who earn a living from this activity, along with fishing during the rest of the year, in addition to the licensees of Isla Holbox and Cancun. He said according to statistics, last year during the season from (mid) May to (mid) September, more than 60,000 people participated in this experience.

Rescue of stranded turtle

Rescatan tortuga varada[+] Ver mas
A Loggerhead turtle was rescued by Antonio Garcia, aka "Captain Tony", who is a descendent of Island fishermen. He videotaped the rescue and posted it on social networks, where it received positive comments, locally and internationally. The event took place on Saturday, near the Cuban balsero boat that is still on the shore, near colonia la Gloria.
Sr. Garcia saw the turtle from the cliffs near the FOVISSSTE housing, and although it appeared to be dead, he climbed down to investigate. He saw that she was breathing and she moved a fin, so he set down his video camera (leaving it running), took off his shoes, and flipped her over. As soon as she was in position, she moved strongly and returned to the sea.
Sr Garcia said this is not the first time he has rescued turtles, since he spent many years as a lobster fisherman. He said they would get caught in the nets and some died, and he freed four turtles; a loggerhead and three greens, as well as many manta rays, aka 'bala'.
He said the erosion of the beaches, with many rocky areas, causes the turtles to go farther to find an appropriate nesting spot, and to try repeatedly, which is a great effort for such large and heavy animals, and they can be injured or fall. He said the program of the Tortugranja for many years to rescue the eggs, has resulted in a 70 percent survival rate and protects the eggs from being taken by people.
The former fisherman, who now works in the tourism industry, said this year there are more turtles, and sometimes they dig up each others nests. This leaves eggs exposed, which creates a feast for the gulls and crabs, or causes bad odors when they rot. He said there were some remains of eggs in the area of the rescue.
"This year has been the highest concentration of sea turtles. I don't know about the other beaches in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, which have been affected by sargasso, while here on the island the lack of seaweed facilitates spawning. They were mating in May and June and I saw hundreds off of Punta Sur. It was like nothing I have ever seen; there were so many males and females. Pairs of all three species. It is difficult to estimate but this year the number of eggs could be four times as many, though you'd have to ask at the Tortugranja. But I think we are talking about some hundreds of thousands of eggs, at least," he said.

The Mass on Saturday night was the final part of a week of processions with the image of the Immaculate Conception in the streets of the colonias. About two thousand Catholics participated in this event, which began at 6pm with a caravan of cars, carts, and scooters accompanying the image through the main streets of the island, arriving at the Town Square at 7:15. They were cheered by those who were waiting.
There were songs by the Children's choir, and the Monseñor Fabio Martínez was accompanied by the priests Raúl Sánchez Alonzo and Ernesto Muñoz. The call was a made for the collective chorus of " por favor, gracias y perdón." The Mass ended at 9pm and next was the consecration ceremony, with candles and torches, lit from the hand of each participant.
The ceremony began with the children, who presented offerings, and a prayer of consecration was read for all the children, and then the youths came next, and Mary's protection was sought for them in this world full of challenges. Next was the turn of those who are married, and last were the senior citizens. A box was blessed that held the names of thousands of families, and a prayer was said asking Mary to consecrate the families. There was the general consecration and prayer, with the priest on his knees before Mother Mary. He rose and asked for applause and a song in Her honor. The moment of consecration was beautiful and emotional, bringing many people to tears.
Next was the traditional procession through downtown, with more than 100 banners and torches, with singing by the choirs of both  Alianza con María and Carisma Joven. Fireworks were detonated and then the image was 'raised' and returned to her niche. One of the organizers of the events, Gibran Mex Pinzon, said many young people worked day and night, giving up work, school, and family to participate in these efforts at evangelization.

With the summer holiday season coming to a close soon, the merchants in Isla Mujeres are doing well economically, for the first time in many years. The twenty golf cart rental agencies said they rented nearly 100 percent of their 550 units. The hotel occupancy was over 60%, according to official reports. The ferries and recreational boats that transport tourists were operating at full capacity, moving more than 10,000 passengers daily. The boat tours are operating at over 50 percent, which is better than in the past.
The dozen diving agencies report they are doing business with many vacationers, with good luck for the whale shark tour operators, whose season ends on September 17th.
Baltazar Maldonado said there have been no major benefits for the restauranteurs, although those who are directly on the beach fared better than others. The "saldo blanco" continues (lack of incidents), and security operation continue without problems. The number of tourists has already decreased, compared to the beginning of the vacation period.
