Children set a good example

Planting on Avenue de los Peces

Llevan a cabo jornada de reforestación en la avenida de los Peces

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 4 de agosto.-
Children participating in the summer recreational program  “Baaxlo´ob Palalo´ob” learned about the importance of ecological sustainability in activities conducted by the municipal Department of Ecology, designed to raise their awareness about these issues. They participated in reforestation activities by planting landscaping plants at the entrance to municipal nursery and down the center strip of Avenue de los Peces, using various plants including purple maguey.
They also learned about the ecological work done at the nursery, which includes grinding branches into mulch, which is turned into compost and used for replanting public areas. The youngsters enjoyed an entertaining and interesting visit at the Mundaca Hacienda, conducted by the staff of the Ecology Department.

Canotal residents concerned about crocodiles

En la colonia Cañotal

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 4 de agosto.-
Residents in colonia Cañotal say there are an unknown number of crocodiles in the body of water in front of the new hospital, causing fear about children playing in the area. There are also concerns because the hospital is expected to be open later this month, causing more people to be in the area, and to potentially be at risk.
The reptiles are being seen by neighbors and drivers, now that the area has been cleaned up and brush and weeds were, making the crocodiles easier to spot. Tuesday morning around 11am, taxi drivers were parked to watch one basking at the edge of the lagoon, noting when people were present it returned to the water.
Residents want the appropriate authorities, in this case the Department of Ecology, to take action. Some residents think the crocodiles have been in this body of water for a few years, breeding there, and that they originally came from the Mundaca Hacienda.

Consumer protection agency reviews golf cart rental agencies

A arrendadoras de carritos de golf

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 4 de agosto.- .
Inspectors from PROFECO, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency, came to the island on Tuesday visiting golf cart rental agencies, and reviewing their permits. The inspections began last week, apparently in response to complaints from tourists, with agents conducting operations and follow ups since July 25th.
There have been interventions and suspensions for various irregularities, mostly concerning documentation and permits, and in some cases fines were levied and seals were placed, interrupting business activities for those who did not comply. In some cases, the irregularities could be dealt with on site, and in others the owner or responsible person was required to go to the PROFECO office in Cancun.  These reviews are expected to be continued throughout the summer holiday period, and the PROFECO booth will continue to be in operation during this time, in the Maritime Terminal.

A power failure in one of the underground lines along pronlongation Rueda knocked out power to several neighborhoods, including Salinas, Caribeña, Miraflores, Cañotal and part of colonia La Gloria. The power was interrupted shortly after 8am and was still out at 1pm while they were trying to locate the problem and repair it.
Manager of the CFE, Federal Electrical Commission in Isla Mujeres, Orlando Roque Flores, acknowledged that this was negatively affecting many of the neighborhoods as well as some areas of downtown. (Reports on Facebook said it was back on around 4-5p)

Mangrove cutting irregularities

Protestors gathered to object to the destruction of mangrove plants, which are a protected species, on a lot being cleared on Aeropuerto neighborhood, near the gas station. The construction workers stopped briefly to observe the protester who included social activists Roberto Martínez Aragón and Luis Isidro Venegas.
The protestors signs read: "No to the destruction of mangrove", "No to the murderers of our ecosystem", "Care for Isla Mujeres, land of our children and grandchildren" and "No more destruction."  They pointed out that the plants being razed while the lot was being cleared included several mangrove and palm chit plants, which are protected, noting this seems inconsistent that authorities gave permission and are endorsing this.
There are building permits posted on the nearby fence, including the permit for  chapeo y desmonte, (clearing), but no authorization was seen from SEMARNAT.  Lic. Aragon said the ownership of the lot was registered in 2002 to Jesus Manuel Vidal Mendoza, brother of Pauling Adame (a former Mayor), for use for construction of a residence.
The demonstrators also reported that several square meters of mangrove have been destroyed near the beach club El Pescador for the construction of a dirt road, allegedly for use for golf carts that will be at the business because they have allegedly been granted a concession.
They complained that nothing is done when mangrove is destroyed in Sac Bajo, where several lots have been cleared to build docks, which was done in plain sight. Therefore they don't expect anything to be done at El Pescador, since the area is out of sight of those who pass by on the road.

Large numbers of tourists continue to arrive

Isla Mujeres continues to receive thousands of visitors via the ferries and the boats from the Hotel Zone of Cancun, who are mostly nationals. The golf cart agencies report rentals are at 100%, and there are many people on the beaches.  Hotel occupancy has dropped because many visitors continue to visit for the day and then return to the mainland.
On Hidalgo, the 'thermometer for nightlife in Isla Mujeres', there has been a decline in the number of diners, which is a clear indicator of decreasing hotel occupancy, said Juan Carrillo Figueroa, president of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco). He said hotel occupancy in Cancun is at nearly 100 percent, but the most popular beaches there are filled with seaweed, causing many tourists to come over to Isla Mujeres. Some businesses are benefiting more than others, he said.

Pharmacy of taxistas: Suspended

The agency COFEPRIS, Department for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks placed a suspension seal on the pharmacy of the Taxi Union in La Gloria, following an inspection and review on July 28th.
Official information was unavailable from the office of COFEPRIS in Isla Mujeres, while unofficial sources gave the opinions that it was probably due to lack of proper facilities to store the medications, that there is too much humidity, that there were expired drugs, and that the person dispensing the medications lacks knowledge.
The pharmacy is currently prohibited from dispensing medications to the taxi union members.
