ZOFEMAT employees and altruistic group cleaned the seaweed from the beaches

ISLA MUJERES, 27 de agosto.-

      With assistance from the altruistic group "Heart of Willito" (“El Corazón de Willito”), the staff of ZOFEMAT of the municipal Ecology Department and of the Temporary Employment Program were able to remove the seaweed in just one day from the entire beach known as el "Riíto" on the northern part of the isle, after it became saturated in recent days due to changing directions of ocean currents and wind. With tremendous work, these groups were able to remove about a ton of seaweed, leaving the beach clean and nearly normal, looking like it did before the seaweed arrived.
    The altruistic group"Heart of Willito" was the first to begin cleaning the beach on yesterday afternoon. They removed a significant amount of saragossa, which was buried in the surrounding beaches. Earlier today,  the cleanup work was done by the personnel of ZOFEMAT and of the Temporary Employment Program, who cleaned nearly the entire beach. Nearly a ton of seaweed was removed and deposited in holes created on the beach for that purpose.Business owners do not expect the ocean currents and winds to bring more seaweed.

The following courses and workshops are offered free of charge by the City of Isla Mujeres via the Department of Economic Development, thanks to the HABITAT program: English, Carpentry, Computers, Baking Pastries, Beauty, Workshop for Gender Equality, Workshop Against Discrimination. Fifteenth fisherman treated in the hyperbaric chamber

     Joaquín González Pérez, 51, with the cooperative Makax, was treated for decompression after he dove for one hour at 80 feet, several miles from Isla Mujeres, reported Rosember dzul Ochoa, who operates the capsule. This is the fisherman's fourth accident in 30 years of diving, and he suffered pain in his right shoulder, which resolved after 135 minutes of treatment. He was advised to rest for four days.
    The fisherman acknowledged that this work has become more difficult, however the necessity to survive sends him down to the seabed to harvest lobster, supported by air from a compressor on the surface. When he was affected at noon on Wednesday, he did not pay much attention to the sharp pains he was experiencing and took muscle relaxants, but the discomfort continued until the next morning, so he decided to go in for treatment.
   The president of the Board that manages the capsule, Baltazar Gomez Catzin, said the fisherman showed marked improvement after two hours and fifteen minutes of treatment,, and was given medications and advised that rest is mandatory.
     Sr Gonzalez was diving about three miles from the island, and there were not many lobster, and like many of his colleagues, he stayed down on the bottom longer than he realized, which in his case was for about an hour. He took the normal 'stops' when surfacing, but he soon began feeling the muscle pains.
       Prior to entering the capsule, he commented that diving is not the same as it was 30 years ago when he began in this industry because times change and he is suffering the effects of age. He has been careful, in order to continue, but he has promised to stop more than once in recent years. Rosember Dzul recommended he quit diving to prevent further injuries, or to take the role of driver in his crew so he is not longer exposed to this harsh 'reality'.

     On Friday, the state Fishing Department began offering two workshops on safety and accident prevention which are required  in order to receive the 8000 pesos in assistance which is available for qualified fishermen during the four month ban on lobster fishing. In the state, there are 235 fishermen who are qualified for this program to receive federal aid, after completion of the workshops, of whom 50 are in Isla Mujeres.
       The classes will be available during the first part of September. The support is to assist the fishermen during the four months when lobster fishing is banned (March, April, May, and June). It is also noted that in addition to having reduced income from harvesting fish during the lobster ban season, the fishermen are making less money because of the depreciation of the peso against the dollar, which means replacement parts or equipment is at least 10 percent more expensive this season.
    The program "Pro-Pesca" (pesca means fish) aims to assist the fishermen during the ban period by paying each of them 8000 pesos, if they complete these requirements. In Isla Mujeres the training is scheduled for qualifying members of the local fishing cooperatives as follows:  On Friday & Saturday:  Justicia Social, Isla Blanca and Caribe; and on Monday & Tuesday: Patria & Progreso and Caribe.

     On Monday, an article was published about several housewives who were asking authorities to make sure that the staff of the cantinas were meeting the requirements about monitoring their health. The women were concerned about catching venereal diseases from their husbands who frequent these bars. The staff of the cantina "Maria Jose" (which was mentioned in the article) responded by showing their documents, asking that only their initials be used and not their full names. They said, "We are very healthy, and we are reviewed every week for the control of venereal diseases and HIV."
        The manager showed the bar documents, saying that the women who work there are not prostitutes, and are engaged in "meserear", or preparing foods for snacking. The bar document, dated June 19, 2014, has official names and signatures authorizing the sale of food and liquor by the glass, and documenting a sanitary inspection saying all legal requirements have been met, from the coordinator for Protection Against Health Risks.
         There was also a document from COFEPRES, the federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks for the business and for their staff of six waiters, two cooks, and a bartender. The six women, and one man, whose initials are given, showed their documents, with the majority being from Cancun. They said, "We cannot work in this business without updated documents, and our job is to attend to the customers, nothing more."
      The manager said that when they are paid on Saturday, they are required to show updated documents, and if anyone does not, their pay is immediately withheld. He said, "Although we have no services by prostitutes here, and we are firm about prohibiting it; instead we have people from other bars coming in to seek work, but when they hear our requirements, they don't come back."
