Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 1 de mayo.-
In response to poor internet service during the Easter holidays, the leader and members of the Small Hotel Association, Asociación de Pequeños Hoteles Fascinantes de Isla Mujeres (APHFIM), met with representatives from Telmex to complain about this problem. The leader of the group, Leonel Castillo Povedano explained that the meeting was in response to the concerns of local entrepreneurs who want to know the cause of the problems and inconsistencies that have been occurring increasingly in the internet service in Isla Mujeres. He said, specifically, this generated a countless number of problems and complaints from customers of hotels, shops, and restaurants during this last high season, and requires a quick solution.
In response to this complaint, the staff of the telephone company offered to conduct a business by business review, and the APHFIM president accepted this invitation, offering an email from the association to all hotels interested in receiving these visits from Telmex for an internal diagnosis, to send their contact information and especially the phone numbers where they have their internet connection to be coordinated in the calendar of visits for a technical expert from Telmex to conduct an internal analysis and diagnosis of their facilities. He offered the following contact email/phone for more information: Info@hotelesfim.com, and (998) 214 2117. Also attending the meeting were the leader of CANACO in Isla Mujeres, Juan Carrillo Figueroa and the president of CANIRAC in Isla Mujeres Baltasar Maldonado Tun.

Bar closure over tax payments

Por incumplir reglamento fiscal

ISLA MUJERES, 1 de mayo.-
In less than a week, the bar "Mirtita" was closed for a second time, due to failure to comply with meeting financial obligations to municipal authorities. There have also been complaints for staying open until 12pm, while they have authorization to be open until 8pm.
More than six closure seals were placed on the doors and windows by municipal officials from the Fiscalizacion agency, which will cause the business to be closed through the long weekend, until the Municipal Treasury office is open again on Tuesday, May 5. Half a dozen workers arrived, and were surprised to find the business closed.
According to information obtained, the business owner tried to talk to municipal authorities about reopening the business, but was told it would be necessary to wait until the municipal Treasury office is open on Tuesday. It was also mentioned that there have been complaints about arguing between customers and between the waitresses, and some complainants have seen some customers urinating in the street, which is a main street, when no one is watching. This business has been closed repeatedly over the past year and by previous administrations due to complaints from residents and for failure to comply with their tax obligations.

Wednesday was the first test of the agreement to reduce the number of visitors to the Isla Contoy National Park. THe director, biologist Maria del Carmen Garcia Rivas said the number of visitors was  187 people, thirteen less than the limit of 200. The maximum of 200 daily was established two decades ago by the Management Program, but in recent years it has been exceeded regularly, until a goodwill agreement was reached last week with the licensees, boat tours, and travel agencies. She said everyone complied will with the reductions, except the boat "Jatsaja" which should have had a maximum of 30, and arrived to the island with 32.
According to statistical data collected from January through April 15th, the capacity limits were being exceeded on Wednesdays and Fridays, and therefore the same rules will be imposed on Friday. On the eve of this, Garcia Rivas sent an email to each of the permittees warning that "Starting tomorrow (Friday), if any boat arrives with more than the agreed upon number of people, it will have to vacate the ANP (Natural Protected Area), in accordance with previous agreements."
The Director explained that for vessels that visit the Park six days a week, they will have reductions of passengers on Wednesday and Friday as follows: : “Sol-Ja”, “Buchanan´s”, “Caribbean Express”, with a maximum of 25 passengers; “Jatsa Ja” with 31; “Obi-kue”, with 60; “Martha Luisa”, with 22 passengers.

The goal of the meeting was promotion, information, and encouraging respect and protection of workers.
Martha Rubí Moo Haas, attorney for the Defense of Workers in Isla Mujeres, spoke about the functions and roles of their office, and Barboza Vega of the CDH spoke about what is available during their office hours. The workshop was held at the Community Center and was attended by a significant number of workers who were interested in learning more about the subject.

Here it is an 'optional' holiday (office & bank closings vary state to state) commemorating the victory of Mexican troops against a large number of French troops in 1862.
(Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864. At the time, the US was involved with its Civil War, 1861-65.  {Link:How Battle of Puebla affected US Civil War.} Then the US supported Mexico and invoked the Monroe Doctrine against European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. Napoleon III withdrew French troops in 1866.)
