Lanrry PARRA
The homeless man who died on Saturday after falling off a cliff on the Eastern side of the island was forty one year old Victorio Cruz Martinez, originally from Chilon, Chiapas. Identification with his personal information was found among his belongings by the forensic medical personnel who removed the body. Following ministerial proceedings, the body was taken to Cancun for the autopsy, as required by law. Assistance was provided by the Red Cross paramedics and ambulance.

"Moloc" died in Yucatan: Taken by the sea

“Moloc” muere en Yucatán

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 17 de mayo.-
Arturo Cervera Dzul, better known as "Moloc" died this weekend as a result of decompression sickness, after diving for a long time seeking sea cucumbers at Rios Lagartos, Yucatan. He was about 50 years old and a member of the "Laguna Makax" fishing cooperative. He had moved from Isla Mujeres to Rio Lagartos for the season of sea cucumber production. His body was moved from the port of the state of Yucatan to Isla Mujeres where he was mourned by his family and buried in the municipal cemetery.

Destruction of mangroves continues

Lack of surveillance in Sac Bajo

No hay vigilancia en Zac Bajo

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 17 de mayo.-
Residents are complaining about clearing of mangroves in Sac Bajo on land adjacent to Laguna Makax, where at least three spaces subdivided into lots are being devastated. Residents say there is less vegetation of this type and the number of buildings are increasing without any intervention by authorities. They say this is associated with boat owners who offer whale shark tours, some of whom have up to 12 boats and have no where to tie them up. Neighbors say PROFEPA (Federal Attorney General for Environmental Protection) should intervene.

Undermines certification

Construction of palapas in public beach areas: Businesses

Construcción de palapas en zona de playas públicas: Empresarios

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 17 de mayo.- .

Downtown entrepreneurs say they like that requirements are being met seeking one of the most important worldwide awards, the Blue Flag designation, with measures like cleaning the beaches, checking water quality, and removing mobile vendors. But they are complaining that the Posada del Mar beach is being invaded by the construction of palapas which are being used to provide massage services for a few hours daily, and the rest of the time they are empty.
Requirements for the Blue Flag include signage, adequate bathrooms in businesses with concessions, daily cleaning of the area, installation of the Blue Flag information module, installing a lifeguard tower, having security, and providing an amphibious chair for people with disabilities.

Closure of Bronco's Piano-Bar
Clausuran el Piano-Bar Bronco[+] Ver mas
The piano bar was closed down early Sunday morning for allowing a minor to enter, which was discovered after police came to the bar because of an argument. The young girl was apparently brought with older people, into an atmosphere of nightlife that is not appropriate for a child, and was made available to the DIF, social service agency, who will investigate.
The argument led to the arrest of  Elmi Altair García Briseño, 22, who was charged with damages and minor injuries to a person, and taken before the Public Ministry, Ministerio Público. The municipal department of Fiscalización, Enforcement closed the bar for violation of its rules of operation.

This celebration dates back to colonial times. Construction workers decorate crosses with flowers and mount them on buildings under construction, and have picnics at the site.

May 5. Tuesday: Cinco de Mayo (Battle of Puebla). No school. This date is commemorated more enthusiastically in the US, as general celebration of Mexican culture (and opportunity for abundant consumption of salsa, chips, and Mexican beer.).
Here it is an 'optional' holiday (office & bank closings vary state to state) commemorating the victory of Mexican troops against a large number of French troops in 1862.
(Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864. At the time, the US was involved with its Civil War, 1861-65.  {Link:How Battle of Puebla affected US Civil War.} Then the US supported Mexico and invoked the Monroe Doctrine against European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. Napoleon III withdrew French troops in 1866.)
