Taxi vehicle #08 was impounded as part of an investigation after the vehicle nearly ran over a minor on Friday evening at 7:30pm near the Guadalupe chapel in colonia Salina Chica. A mild physical contact with the unit caused the child's family to be concerned and attracted curious onlookers. Then the Traffic police initiated the protocol for further investigation, and on Saturday the vehicle was in the impound yard.
The driver, Ernesto Fidelino Puc Duran, 30, who resides in colonia Cañotal and is originally from the state of Yucatan is being investigated for possible legal proceedings. The family has not filed a complaint, according to the police, and it is not fully known that no injury has been found.
The Chief of Police, Joaquín Poot Acosta, said this was the only incident on the first day of the current operation to ensure tranquility and peace in the municipality. Some misdemeanors were detected, and he encouraged the community in general to work together to have a 'saldo blanco' for these December holidays, which they expect between now and January 7th when the security operation will be over. (Saldo blanco literally translates as white balance and means without any incidents marring the record)

Caseta being constructed in mangroves

The leader of taxi drivers in Isla Mujeres, Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez, "el Wato is at the center of a controversy because he "authorized" building a caseta in the mangroves of Sac Bajo, allegedly without presenting an Environmental Impact Statement Impact Ambiental (MIA), Manifestación de Impacto Ambiental. It is suggested that the PROFEPA delegate, Ludivina Menchaca should give them a warning.
In recent days, construction workers began to erect a concrete building of about five square meters as a 'control' building and to provide shade for the cabbies that serve tourists visiting the dolphinarium (Dolphin Discovery) at this part of the island.
According to the PROFEPA website information about mangroves, there are four types in Isla Mujeres: red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa), black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) and Buttonwood Mangrove (Conocarpus erectus). The four species are subject to special protection according to the law NOM 059 SEMARNAT-2010, because they could become threatened by factors that adversely affect their viability, which determines the need to foster their recovery and conservation (DOF, 2010).

Fifty five percent of the wetlands in Mexico are located on the Yucatan Peninsula, with a total area of 423,751 hectares as of 2013, but that continues to decrease.

Shipwrecked sailboat at Isla Contoy didn't damage the corals
Velero hundido en Isla Contoy no daño corales [+] Ver mas

The sailboat "Chiron" that ran aground near the coral reef Ixlaché, located south of the National Marine Park of Isla Contoy, had no rupture in its hull, contrary to what was believed, according to the latest inspection conducted by the staff of PROFEPA (Federal Environmental Protection Agency). Good weather is expected for its removal.
The 42 foot boat from the United States was bound for Guatemala when it suffered damage to its sail on the morning of Nov. 27 in the Yucatan Channel, and used up the rest of its fuel using its engine to get to the accident site, amid strong winds of a 'norte' northern front.
According to information received, there is an irregularity between the writing on the reports and the facts, since there was no break in the hull, so there is an investigation of the company in charge of the rescue, regarding alleged alteration of data. It is assumed that the intention was to try and surprise the boat owners by charging them a high sum for the rescue.
There has not been damage to the coral during the shipwreck. The sinking may have been due to strong currents that were generated by the strong winds. It became full of water and the sand did not damage the hull, even with the rocks nearby. There is an unofficial report that it will be rescued over the next week, once the weather improves.
