ISLA MUJERES, 25 de octubre.-
The reef in the area of "El Meco" is being damaged by the large numbers of tourists visiting lately. These reefs are attractive to visitors because they have several types of corals, including some which are classified as endangered. This area is not part of a PNA, Protected Natural Area, but the many boats visiting the area are causing concern for the  Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), who have not yet established a regulatory plan for the area.

This is the thirteenth facility of this type in the state. This facility will directly benefit residents, including  youths between 5 and 14 years of age in Isla Mujeres, as well as the ejido Isla Mujeres, and the towns of Francisco May & Punta Sam in the Continental Zone.
The educational activities will include instructional videos, lectures, workshops, guided tours, group activities, reading circles, and contests. The interest and participation of the children will occur through the promotion of technology and social consciousness, to fortify strategies and policies for the protection, conservation, restoration, and management of water resources. The goal is to generate a respectful attitude about these issues among the young people, and to consolidate social awareness to support sustainable development in the region.

The director of the Ecology department, Cristina Medina Figueroa, explained that if animals are loose in the streets, they are considered strays, because otherwise the owner should keep them in an area at home and provide necessary care. After stray animals are captured, they are given appropriate care and veterinary supervision for three days, and after that deadline, they are removed to the pound in Cancun. During those three days, the owners may recover their pet at the Mundaca Hacienda. In the case of re-offending, they could be penalized financially, according to the law. One of the residents in colonia la Gloria is complaining that their dog was taken away, although s/he asked them not to take it.

En la avenida Rueda Medina

Lanrry PARRA
Strong winds and heavy rains affected Isla Mujeres for almost 48 hours, suspending the construction of Rueda Medina avenue which is being repaved from the entrance to the car ferry to the restaurant Capitan Laffite. Last week the director of Public Works,  Miguel Ariel Caballero García, said the work is expected to be completed in two weeks or by the end of October, but he also said this date depends on the weather situation. He said the work is being done in 800 linear meter sections. (Another article with information from the company doing the work said they bid to finish it in 70 days, but hope to have it done in 60 days, which would be Dec. 15th.).

Tras 48 horas de mantenerse restringida la navegación

Lanrry PARRA
After 48 hours of restriction for general navigation from the threat of tropical depression number 9, the port was partially opened, with continued restrictions for sport fishing and ribereña fishing. Things were expected to normalize on Friday.
After the heavy rains, tourism activities resumed on the island and visitors were observed in the streets and beaches, walking, shopping, boating and enjoying themselves. Friday winds increased to over 35 kilometers per hour, and it is possible that the port will be closed on Saturday for vessels under forty feet. (The restrictions did not affect the ferries.)
ISLA MUJERES, 23 de octubre.- .

International destination
Over 150 competitors are registered to compete in the open water swimming event at North Beach on Sunday, Oct 26th. The island is an international destination which the City believes should offer a wide variety of tourism opportunities, providing facilities and support for having events of all kinds, including sports events such as this. Competitors from Quintana Roo receive a half price fare on the Ultramar ferry. Each competitor is accompanied by at least one more person, who will be staying and eating, and therefore this event benefits restaurants and hotels, and other businesses of the island.

This includes 70 senior citizens and 181 primary school students. Of the 352 middle school students examined, 63 students require glasses.

The cost of their glasses can exceed 800 pesos, and the City pays 700 pesos and the seniors pay 100 pesos.  For the primary school students, the subsidy is fifty percent, which means parents pay 100 pesos, giving 50 pesos in advance and the other 50 pesos when the glasses are delivered. Families living near the lakes Salina Grande, Salina Chica, and Salina Aeropuerto are pleased with the increasing biodiversity, especially the presence of fish. With the recent rains, some fish were trapped in pools of water outside the bodies of water. It has been recommended that elementary teachers organize a campaign to help the children rescue the rest of the fish. It is recalled that in May there were many fish deaths in Salina Grande due to a lack of oxygen when the water levels were low. Now the problem is overpopulation, so children in the area have been catching them by fishing with lines.
