Isla Mujeres made it to the finals after defeating The Diablos from Mexico City, and the Barracudas of Cozumel, and the Pumas of UNAM, during the regular season, and they beat the Cancun Pioneers in the semifinals. Team members were  Hugo Castillo, Lizandro Ávalos, Miguel Parra, Alexander Heredia, José Luís García, Tony Angulo and Edwin Novelo.

Growing Demand for Employees in Isla Mujeres

With summer holiday season, the demand for labor at resorts & hotels, restaurants, and other businesses in the tourism industry has exceeded the amount of available workers, said Gilberto Maldonado, one of the leaders of the CROC union. He said workers are arriving daily from Cancun to meet the demand generated by  various establishments in Isla Mujeres, mostly the large hotels. He noted that at the start of this week, in the morning they already had two dozen job requests for which they lacked personnel to take the jobs.  He added that in most cases when people come to seek employment, they lack basic documentation such as their birth certificate and voter card, and therefore CROC is unable to integrate them into the workforce.

Continuing "wave" of  scooter robberies
Continúa ola de robos de motos+] Ver mas
(Six complaints in three months, with one this month. Most were recovered, with parts missing)
Citizens remain concerned that motorcycle thefts have continued, with one theft reported this month and a total of six complaints filed in the past three months. The authorities at the Ministerio Publico explained that there are few criminals who would dare to steal motorcycles for their own use, because it would be easy to locate the vehicle and catch them. These thefts are related to the sale of motorcycle parts and the bikes have been recovered missing items such as wheels, tires, mirrors, chains and seats.

Three days of rain
Lluvias para los próximos tres días+] Ver mas
The Harbor Master advised boaters to stay attuned to weather reports since three days of rain were forecast for the area, associated with Tropical Wave #8. If winds exceed 40 kilometers per hour, activities for small boats under 40 feet will be suspended.  According to the weather forecast, showers are possible on Tuesday. At 10am we have blue skies and sunshine, with scattered whitecaps that appear to be increasing a little, and there's a nice breeze. Beautiful day! (and great for drying laundry quickly!)

Great influx of tourists to Isla Mujeres
Gran afluencia de turistas a Isla Mujeres[+] Ver mas
There was a 70% increase in the number of passengers of the two ferry companies this weekend, causing long lines at times. Transporting 220 people per crossing, resulted in moving more than 30,000 people daily.  Transport Magana reported a 30% increase in ridership. This crossing is less expensive, but the boats go hourly so they move 1000 to 2000 people daily.

Accumulating trash at the Transfer Facility
Se acumula la basura en la Estación de Transferencia. [+] Ver mas

With four vehicles out of order, trash is accumulating at the Transfer Facility, because it is not being moved to the landfill on the mainland at the usual rate. There are 10 vehicles for the collection and transport of trash, of which only six are currently operational. The reporter suggests that this problem is caused by the economic crisis facing the City of Isla Mujeres, resulting in the trucks not being satisfactorily repaired. There are concerns because the amount of trash produced daily increases during the summer holiday season.Photo TV Isla Mujeres

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases usually begin around the end of July & are held periodically until early October.
Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling.

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

The Mexican government announced plans Monday to invest about $100 billion in rail, road, telecom and port projects over the next five years, including Mexico's first high-speed rail links. Among the projects are the modernization or building of four airports, seven seaports and about 3,350 miles (5,410 kilometers) of highways. The government will strengthen fiber optic networks and expand broadband internet access, and speed up freight train service.  ......President Enrique Pena Nieto emphasized the goal of reviving passenger trains in Mexico.
.....Another line will cross the Yucatan Peninsula. Though details have not been released, it is expected to link the Caribbean coast resort of Cancun with the colonial city of Merida, Yucatan.
