Ensure safe stays for tourists this summer                                    At the meeting of the Operation Committee for Summer Vacation 2013, preventative actions were evaluated. The head of Civil Protection, Gabriel Sulu coordinated the efforts, which included representatives from the Navy, Red Cross, Harbor Master, Civil Protection and others. They exchanged contact numbers and coordinated staff and surveillance operations and hours. They agreed that most people are on the beach between 9am and 5pm, and personnel are needed in those areas at those times. Club owners were encouraged to respect los límites de cupo, which are new requirements which they are being notified of for this holiday season. (I think that is capacity limits,)

Tuesday was the deadline for political parties to remove political propoganda located within 50 meters of a polling place. Some of this was done Wednesday morning and some remains to be removed, on Wednesday. If it remains it will be reported, and if it is not removed, IEQROO will remove it, and costs will be charged to the political party responsible.

Although some tourism activities were suspended by the rain, like swimming with the whale sharks and para sailing,   the port remained open because the waves were calm. Although tours were allowed to Farito and Contoy,  tourists preferred to avoid boat tours in the rain. There were also fewer tourists arriving to spend the day, and most preferred to stay in their hotels and avoid getting wet or risking getting sick. In Isla there is a high demand for snorkeling, boating, and fishing, and unfortunately this type of tourism was driven away on Wednesday by the weather.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases will begin in about a month & be held periodically until early October.
Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling.

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
