Although this is supposed to be a low-season for nesting turtles, there have been three times as many  as the previous low season in 2018. About 10,000 hatchlings have been released so far this year, and the Tortugranja has protected 965 nests containing 105,643 eggs. The official season is May 15-Oct 15, but the monitoring and protection begins two weeks before and continues two weeks afterwards.  The breakdown is Hawksbill-5 nests with 777 eggs, Loggerheads-68 nests with 6943 eggs, and Greens with 892 nests and 97,923 eggs.

A Code Red was implemented last evening when shots were reported around 6:30pm (Thursday/yesterday) inside a home in colonia Amplification La Gloria, on Fernando Fernandez Street, where the executed woman was already deceased when the Red Cross paramedics arrived. Members of the National Guard continued to guard the area while municipal authorities cordoned off the site, awaiting transfer of the body to SEMEFO. LINK

TV Isla Mujeres reports that a search operation took place around 10:30 Wednesday night involving personnel with the Navy, and the Porsecutor's office as well as the municipal police, at an address a few blocks from the Las Tortugas park. During the operation, officers with the National Guard were seen checking roofs of homes near the searched house. Officers also carried out checks on motorcycles traveling in the vicinity of the operation. LINK

In a brief interview after the unfortunate execution of a woman in colonia Amplicacion, the municipal Chief of Police, Capitán de Navío Infante de Marina Paracaidista Diplomado del Estado Mayor, Eduardo Fouilloux Bataller, said they are working hand in hand with the Prosecutor's Office and the National Guard, in search of those responsible, who also killed a dog. He said patrols have been increased throughout the island, and asks that the citizenry report any suspicious people or activities. La Tertulia notes that the search on Wednesday evening in colonia La Gloria, resulted in arrests, and no shots were fired.

Now all renewals of driver's licenses, as well as new applications, will require both a theoretical test and a practical test, with the latter taking place on the runway on Thursdays. An applicant was observed taking the test at the airfield on Thursday, driving between cones and conducting reverse maneuvers. (photo)

Turtles continue nesting in August. They can be observed mating offshore from Punta Sur during this month, and they nest along the eastern beaches. Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres, Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but generally the sand isn't sufficiently deep.

Swimming with the whale sharks takes place in August, which ends annually in mid-September. They congregate and feed on a 'buffet' of plankton and fish eggs from a type of tuna. Rays are also attracted to the feeding areas.  Photo by Tony Garcia

>>Meteors!! The Perseids are currently active & one of the most popular showers. They will peak in the early mornings of the weekend of August 11,12 & 13, but the moon will be at or slightly past its last quarter phase and interfering. However, the Perseids are bright & you may see 3 or 4 dozen when they are peaking, if you're patient. They continue thru the 24th. The Alpha Capricornids are going on now (thru Aug. 15) with only a few meteors per hour, but they are known for producing bright fireballs when active. (They peaked Tuesday & moonlight will interfere with visibility.)
