Due to the effects of Cold Front #29, the Harbor Master restricted small boats to port on Saturday night which continued on Sunday. Tourism activities in the Marine Park were suspended, and the fishermen were unable to go out. The front included strong winds, cloudy skies and cooler temperatures at night. It is expected to lose strength on Monday. (The other article about the cold front notes that hotel occupancy is at 60 percent, with lower rates at the smaller hotels, and that the lobster fishermen benefit from the cold fronts with larger catches in their nets and traps when they can go out after the front passes.)Human Rights Commission involved in case of injured girl

Gina Medina, relative of the girl who was injured at a private school after she was allegedly pushed by another girl, said that the Human Rights Commission has become involved in the case. The SEQ, State Secretary of Education, could take action against the private school for failure to follow protocols. The girl, Melody, had injuries to her abdomen, left arm, and face, and Ms Medina said she has a cracked bone, which is shown on her X rays, and severe pain in her shoulder. She is a fifth grade student at Jean Piaget school, and her mother has complained that the school didn't notify her, and she didn't find out her daughter was injured until she picked her up from school. She contacted CAVI, the Support Center Against Domestic Violence and alleges that her daughter is being bullied by the other girl.Young people invited to join soccer league

Complaints about Community Hospital doctors

The doctors at the Community Hospital were advised they should see 12 to 18 patients per shift, in accordance with the official standard, but a witness said there are doctors who only see 5 or 6, and allegedly feel protected by their union. There has been a good response to the property tax discount program, which will continue at fifteen percent off thru the end of February, and over half the taxes funds are expected to be collected by the end.This weekend the Isla Mujeres Cahuameros play the Aluxes of Cancun on their (basketball) court.in an attempt to qualify for the play offs. Last weekend they won one game and lost the other against the league leaders, the Dorados of Playa del Carmen.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Saturday, Jan 5 Plogging volunteers cleanup 8a-10a. Meeting at gas station on prolongacion Aeropuerto/Caribbean coastal road. Gloves & equipment supplied. The Plogging crew, who removed seven and a half TONS of trash from Isla's coasts, mangroves, and seabed in 2018. (See link above)
Sunday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts. It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.

Jan. 6 is also Día de la Enfermera/Nurse's Day in Mexico. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi. (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
Sunday, Jan. 6 at 1p at the Pescador baseball field in front of Chedraui, the Cocteleros of Isla Mujeres will play their first game of the new year against the Old Boys of Cancun, & there will be a toy giveaway in honor of 3 Kings Day (Donations are encouraged). Entrance is 20 pesos, merchandise is available & thanks to Joseph R Walsdorf for the update!
