Residents intervene to stop two assailants

Propinaron golpiza a transeúnte en Isla Mujeres

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 4 de julio.-
On Sunday night, a passerby was walking toward colonia Salinas, near the restaurant "Pelayos", when he was beaten by two young men, who were apparently drunk. There was no apparent reason for the attack and neighbors subdued the attackers and handed them over to the Municipal police, who put them in cells at the Police station. The Red Cross ambulance arrived moments after the assault, but the injured person had already withdrawn to his home, and the paramedics only attended to one of the assailants. They are both minors from the state of Tabasco.
The police chief said that in addition to these two detainees, there are two others who have been arrested for disturbing the peace, and will be taken before the municipal judge. He said they will try to make the offender pay for the damage caused, but it will be via personal agreements between the parties involved.

Nearly 1000 visitors daily observing & swimming with whale sharks

There are about 100 licensees from Isla Mujeres offering whale shark tours who have begun their second month of work, helping transport nearly 1000 visitors daily, according to some tour directors. There are a total of more than 300 boats with authorizations, from the municipalities of Isla Mujeres, Benito Juarez, and Lazaro Cardenas. The season concludes on September 17, according to the Management Plan.
Nearly a decade ago, it was agreed to charge $120usd per tourist, but brokers make their profit, and sometimes charge more than that, and may only pay the boat owners the equivalent of 800-1000 pesos per person. The cost may be increased next season due the amount of the costs for fuel and wear on the engines to travel more than 40 miles.
It is noted there are a lack of PROFEPA (Federal Environmental Protection) agents monitoring the whale sharks.

The summer vacation season will begin soon, and tourism providers say they are ready to receive the holiday tourists. The Tourism Department reports that the hotels have a good amount of reservations and occupancy could rise to 80 percent.
Tourism was active on Monday, including groups of tourists visiting for the day who were enjoying the beaches and touring to the southern part of the isle in golf carts. The lifeguards report that the buoys are in good condition, and security forces of all three levels of government are ready to safeguard human lives. The ferries are ready to increase their boats and crossings as needed to meet the increased demands.

A tropical wave moving westward across the Caribbean is being monitored according to the 4pm report from the SCT (Secretary of Communication and Transport), which could bring rains to the coastal areas of Quintana Roo. These could be thunderstorms associated with squalls, gusts of wind, and increased waves.
Rain threatened at 6pm, but didn't occur. SEMARNAT (Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources) are monitoring two other tropical waves, with one east of the Lesser Antilles and the other in the Eastern Atlantic. The port was open to small boats on Monday and the fishermen have been reporting good lobster catches at the beginning of the season.
