Preventing unwanted pregnancies with contraceptive implants

 Colocan implantes

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 20 de junio.-
The Director of Reproductive Health at the Community Hospital of Isla Mujeres, Leyli Osorio Mares, said there is a campaign to offer subdermal contraceptive implants to women who desire them. The first clinic was held June 16th, when 12 women received implants and the next one will take place on Wednesday. The Director said in the past seven years, over 400 implants have been successfully placed, thereby causing a 40 percent reduction in teen pregnancies and decreasing maternal morbidity, as well as the risks that are involved.
The doctor explained that this method is very effective, even comparing it to a tubal ligation, with the advantage that the implant can be removed when the woman wishes to become pregnant. Those who are interested should come to the hospital between 8am and 1pm. There are two requirements;  the woman must not be pregnant, which means she must be menstruating or have a negative pregnancy test, and she must weigh less than 90 kilograms.
She said there are many people interested, mainly teenagers. At this time they have 15 implants available, which are effective for three years. It is placed using local anesthesia, and the care is minimal. Those who are interested do not need to have Seguro Popular (insurance) and no appointment is necessary.
