The eggs take about 45-60 days to hatch and are then placed in the holding tanks, to be released in the evenings when they are less likely to be seen by birds, who are natural predators of the young turtles. Although all protective measures are taken, it is said that of 100 hatchlings released, only one survives. The season continues through October 15, and includes surveillance at night of the areas where the turtles traditionally nest.

The 'absorption wells' (pozos de absorción),overflow when there is intense rain, which causes complaints from the general public and a bad image for tourism, because it can affect the sewage system & cause water contaminated with sewage to overflow in some areas. The Aguakan company has not been able to solve this problem, which affects some parts of the colonias of Canotal and Meterorologica, as well as some downtown and beach areas. It is said that the problem has worsened downtown outside the Naval base and near the restaurants on Rueda Medina.

Court case continues against former Mayor
Van todavía tras de Cárdenas Bazán m.. [+] Ver masFull article & photo at this link
The court case involving former Mayor Jorge Cardenas Bazan, which accuses him of theft, has not been resolved, with an appeal pending of court decisions. The case involves the destruction of two palaps on Playa Norte in the Federal Zone, over a year ago. The former Mayor was arrested and released, and a decision is awaited from the court: Sala del Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Cancún. The two decisions of the court: Juzgado Mixto de Primera Instancia de Isla Mujeres are being contested.
Lawyer Jose Martin Mejia Alvarez said the court made a determination on the issue of theft, but not on the issue of damages. He said the damages are estimated to be at least 650,000 pesos and the destuction included two palapas, refrigerators, refrigerators, cameras, beach chairs, and umbrellas, among other things. He said the employees were threatened during the invasion.
It is reacalled that over a year ago, at night, vandals entered the Federal Zone area where a concession is held by Carlos Raúl Cervera Peraza “Chichis”, and they destroyed two palapas and everything inside. The case alleges that they were hired by Vicente de Jesús Celis Sánchez alias “Longplay”, who was acting on instructions from former mayor Jorge Luis Cárdenas Bazán. Three months ago, the former mayor was arrested in the Cancun airport and released two days later. Sr. Celis was arrested a month ago, and also released days later.
The Judge released Sr. Cardenas due to lack of evidence to be prosecuted, and Sr. Celis was released due to “desvanecimiento de datos” (fading/disappearing of facts?). These decisions are being appealed. Sr Mejia, the lawyer, said the two men are likely to be returned to jail if the judge determines that the complaints are valid.
The lawyer presented documents to support Mr. Cervera's claim on the 2600 square meters of Federal Zone, showing it was granted to him in 2002 by the Federal Governmental agency SEMARNAT (Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales), as Concesión Marítimo Terrestre número DGZF-448102.
