Fire controlled at Trash Transfer Facility

After hard work by the Municipal Public Services Department

Tras ardua labor de Servicios Públicos Municipales

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 12 de octubre.-
Nearly 24 hours after a fire broke out at the Trash Transfer Facility of Isla Mujeres, workers of the municipal Public Services Department disclosed that the conflagration is fully under control. Nevertheless, personnel of the Navy, workers with Civil Protection, and employees with the Department of Public Services continue to work toward the eradication of the fire, which put dozens of residents and homes in the area at risk.
The Director of Public Services, Manuel Figueroa Cetina, said the incident is now under control, and admitted they were still working to eradicate the remainder, and would continue to work for in the upcoming hours to remove the last residues of the fire.
He said they do not know the cause of the fire at this time, and said he did not believe this was a premeditated act by any specific person. He said it was most likely to have been an accident, caused by the strong rays of the sun and the intense heat that has occurred in recent days. He explained that the fire began in the area of the dead weeds (residuos de maleza)  by the facility, which are highly flammable because of the heat the has prevailed lately, and it did not begin in the trash area, where there is garbage and plastic bottles.
He estimated that there was about 500 square meters of dead weeds that burned since 5 pm yesterday, of a total of about 1000 square meters of area that is occupied by this type of waste. The fire began at 5:20 yesterday, and when today began, you could see the flames had threatened nearby houses. This incident was controlled by personnel with the Mexican Navy, Civil Protection, and Aguakan. The paramedics of the Red Crass and members of the municipal police department also participated.

This has the same information that was already translated, and in addition it notes the the incident caused pollution that affected dozens of families, as well as tourist businesses and guest houses in the vicinity. The road was closed by the waste treatment plant. Pool water and sea water were used against this emergency, which was overseen by the Director of Civil Protection, Humberto Rodriguez Velazguez, and is awaiting the Public Services Direction, Manuel Figueroa Cetina. Many questions were raised on social networks about the inability of the government to prevent this problem.
The toxic smoke blew from house to house, from the house of Ramon Bravo to the home of Ricardo Gaitan, following the direction of the wind, and therefore it affected restaurants including  Capitán Dulché, Indios and Casa de los Sueños; the families Fernández, Ríos, Povedano, Ayala; and many homes of Mexicans and foreigners in the area.
Foreigners who spend the winter on the island were alarmed by the photos and videos that were shared on social networks. Commenters and politicians are blaming the Mayor, the municipal government, and the director of Public Services. It is noted that problem of accumulated trash was not resolved due to the poor status of the fleet of vehicles which they are dependent upon.

Mysterious column of smoke at sea
Misteriosa humareda en altamart.. [+] Ver mas

Oct. 12 ISLA MUJERES   At 7:20am on Monday, a column of smoke was seen on the horizon offshore, northeast of Isla Contoy National Park. It was seen from the Caribbean coast of Isla Mujeres and some witnesses took pictures. Three hours later when the reporter inquired at the Harbor Master's office, the Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil was unaware of the event. The Director of Isla Contoy National Park also knew nothing about it.
It is conjectured that some accident may have occurred, such as a fire on a boat, but nothing has been heard. At the time the weather was very calm, and the port was open for navigation by small boats.

There was a pleasant meeting and 28 mammograms were done, and all had good results.

Every Tuesday and Thursday: Free spay/neuter clinic  (Isla Animals)
Consults 100p, Vaccines: parvo & distemper 50p, flea & tick meds 20p, wormer 10p. Helpers always welcome! Isla Animals, Mundaca Hacienda, 10am-4pm (No food morning of surgery/water ok)

From Sally MargolisHi all!! We (Isla Animals) are gearing up for a HUGE Spay/Neuter, Vaccination, Wellness campaign for the animals in Rancho Viejo Nov 17-22. This is a very poor area in the municipality of Isla Mujeres. Most are living without electricity and running water. The situation for the animals there is dire right now with parvo & distemper running rampant, and heavy overpopulation. We expect to treat/vaccinate/spay/neuter 1000 cats & dogs with the cost of surgery at just $10us per dog. This may be the only time any of these animals see a vet. We can treat the existing animals, vaccinate others against disease, curb the population growth, and educate pet owners on proper animal care and make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!! We have the knowledge, experience, volunteers, and heart to make it happen. We are asking for all of your help to raise funds to make the campaign a reality. (We can also accept Paypal donations via our site islaanimals.org - just add RANCHO VIEJO in message, and cash in person on Isla Mujeres. Please, please share the link on your social media. It helps us so much. If you are not in a position to donate PLEASE do read the campaign & share, there is lots of excellent info in it about the work we do-There is always so much to do! Thank you for your time! http://www.gofundme.com/isla-animals-rv
