7 Cuban 'balseros' rescued and turned over to the Navy in Isla Mujeres

Buque los rescata y los entrega a la Armada en Isla Mujeres

Lanrry PARRA
Seven Cuban refugees were rescued by a tanker while sailing aboard a small boat with an improvised sail, 109 kilometers northeast of Isla Mujeres. On Sunday at 5:35pm the tanker notified the Navy who dispatched a "Defender" type boat from the Search and Rescue unit, who located the tanker at 9:30am. The naval doctor evaluated the four women and three men, who were in good health. They were taken to the Puerto Juarez Naval station where they were handed over to the Immigration authorities at 2:05pm. The Navy reported that these actions were performed in compliance with their legal responsibilities to safeguard human life at sea.

Public works completed on the island in the past year by the municipality include construction of modern toilets in a Caribbean style building, as well as renovation of the downtown park with new benches, trash cans, lighting, flower beds, and planters. The old fountain was removed, and the basketball court was renovated. The eastern malecon seawalk had an installation of new solar lights, benches, and trash cans, and received new paint. The sidewalks and landscaping along Rueda Medina  have been improved including the signs for the vehicle and pedestrian areas. The prison was remodeled and expanded with two additional cells.

CROC union to begin wage adjustments

Croc iniciará ajuste salarial [+] Ver mas
The CROC union will be seeking a 10% increase in wages and benefits during its contractual negotiations. When contacting the first company, the wage increase requested will be 4.2 % with the rest of the ten percent coming from benefits such as food and basic necessities for the workers. It is noted that many waiters, cooks, and others make insufficient wages to support life on the island, and must work two jobs to have money to educate their children.
