Hospital workers under contract waiting to collect their two week salary: Potential work stoppage

Trabajadores por contrato siguen sin cobrar su quincena

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 26 de enero.-
The workers under contract at the General Hospital of Isla Mujeres were not paid on January 15 and they are concerned they will not be paid on Jan. 31st. The affected employees represent about 65 percent of the workforce of the hospital and include general practitioners and medical specialists, nurses, administrators, and the intendencia (quartermaster). The new administrator of the Hospital, Jose Alberto Cortazar, was in Chetumal this weekend, and the workers want explanations from him. There is a possibility that the workers could conduct a work stoppage which would affect hundreds of patients and beneficiaries.

The Department of Public Services should respect the agreed upon schedule for trash transfer on the vehicle ferry
Posted: 23 Jan 2015 05:26 PM PST

Management of the vehicle ferry are reporting problems because Public Services have not been adhering to the schedule agreement regarding transfer of trash, which was established to avoid inconvenience to tourists and to avoid times of peak flow. Tourists and other drivers are complaining about the odors given off by the large containers. This includes the problem that the trucks are sometimes parked for hours, causing leakage into the parking lot. The administrators of the ferry company have warned the Public Services agency director that services could be denied if they don't respect the schedule. It was noted that today many tourists departed the ferry covering their noses and mouths, to avoid the bad odor, and that the cleaners at the terminal area are also annoyed. There are about 38 tonnes of trash collected daily, with most of it transferred to the mainland aboard these large trucks.

The number of fishermen treated at the Hyperbaric Chamber has increased to  63
Posted: 23 Jan 2015 05:01 PM PST
The number of fishermen treated at the Hyperbaric Chamber of Isla Mujeres has increased to 63 during this lobster season, with the first two cases of the year being pescadores foráneos , fishermen from outside of the island. Juan Carlos Gosco Arguelles, 28, from Lazaro Cardenas, was treated after diving 110 feet deep. He was treated on Friday, and his decompression symptoms were not considered grave/serious. He suffered symptoms in one of his arms after spearfishing about 15 nautical miles from Boca Nueva, near  Chiquilá and Holbox.
The other case occurred Thursday, to  fisherman Florencio Yam Alconcer, 38,  who is a member of the Puerto Juarez cooperative. His case was more serious with symptoms of numbness in his left leg and lower back, and he may need at least 10 sessions to achieve full recovery, according to the director of the Hyperbaric Chamber. Lobster season concludes on February 28th, (and began on July 1st.)
Mobile vendors of Isla Mujeres want the law applied equally to all
Mobile vendors who were removed from the beach by municipal regulations say that the law focuses on the beaches, because certification is being sought there, but that tourists are being harassed in the streets by  comisionistas y enganchadores, (hawkers and brokers). The mobile vendors were speaking out anonymously, saying that authorities should remove those hawkers & brokers from the street, who they consider more annoying, and suggesting that the hawkers may also be avoiding taxes/fees.  They say the law is not being applied evenly.  One of the mobile vendors said, "When authorities first talked about making these radical changes, they said that removing the mobile vendors was the first stage, and when the new Maritime Terminal went into operation, they would remove the hawkers from the streets, but the latter did not happen."  The mobile vendors say their income has dropped since the law began, and while they have enough merchandise to support their families, they cannot afford to rent sales space, because their income is not great enough for that.

From the Municipal Facebook site.....

Pilot plan to extend ferry hours
Plan piloto para ampliar horarios de cruce[+] Ver mas

Ultramar (represented by director Arturo Baez) met with the City Council Secy. General (Cesar Poot) on Monday to discuss extending their hours, with three more crossings, which may begin Feb. 13-16, during Carnaval, and then continue on Friday's, Saturday's, & Sunday's. The boat would be departing Isla Mujeres at 1a, 2a, & 3a., and departing Puerto Juarez 12:30a, 1:30a, & 2:30a. They also discussed the problem of transport of night time emergencies & that this new schedule could improve that. Those attending the meeting included leaders of  Canaco, Canirac, Hoteles de Isla Mujeres y Pequeños Hoteles, Juan Carrillo, Baltazar Maldonado, Guadalupe Martínez and Leonel Povedano, respectively.

Plan for the area known as "Aguas Azules" (Whale shark tour area: "Blue Waters")
Hay plan para las Aguas Azules[+] Ver mas
The Management Plan for "Aguas Azules" that was created by the  La Asociación Eco Turismo Isla Mujeres AC was presented about two weeks ago. This group represents the whale shark licensees and say, "This an alternative proposal for management, because it is in the interest of the Association to seek ways and stratagies for the activity (swimming with the whale sharks) in a sustainable manner, and with the main objective of conserving the whale sharks (species Rhincodon typus), to significantly reduce the impact on this important resource."
They also contacted Por Esto, via an email from Kin Lima and Rafael de la Parra, regarding clarifications to information in the January 26th edition of the newspaper. They said, "Diesel engines are not prohibited under the current management plan, since they are environmentally cleaner and more efficient than outboard engines. Regarding size, the "Grampus" is 26 feet long and the "Lilly M" is 36 feet and they have had permits since 2004 and 2008 respectively and are fully within the specifications of the law. It is true that yachts over 40 feet have been entering the whale shark tour area, but it is unknown whether or not they have permits from the authorities."
"It is important that the community of Isla Mujeres is communicating with the authorities to prevent these permits to large ships from Cancun, because there are a limited number of permits to be authorized to Cancun, and there could be fewer permits available for the licensees of Isla Mujeres, Chiquila, and Holbox.
The alternative Management Plan was submitted on January 15 to authorities of SEMARNAT (Secretary of Environment & Natural Resources) and Vida Silvestre (Wildlife).  Aguas Azules is in the eastern part of the area of the Biosfera del Tiburón Ballena/Whale Shark Biosphere, which is administered by these authorities and CONANP, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.

SUNDAY, FEB. 1

If you live in Isla Mujeres, on Saturday, Jan. 31, before you go to bed, change your clock ahead on hour.

The time change (an hour ahead) is scheduled to take place  at 2am on Feb 1st.  This is a 'permanent' change voted in by the Legislature last year, that has been discussed, and promoted by the tourism industry, for years. It will sync us up with a coupla dozen airports in the US & Canada, "add an hour of daylight" & supposedly save money on energy.
The internet indicates we will no longer participate in the changing back & forth with Daylight Savings Time. Currently we are in sync with Central time, and will continue to be when that zone is on DST, but the rest of the year, we will be in sync with Eastern Standard Time.
DST is March 8-Nov. 1 in the US, and April 5-Oct 25 in Mexico, when Isla will be in sync with CT. During the fall/winter Isla will be in sync with EST.

Monday, February 2 no school/day off for February 5th Constitution Day. (And if you got the baby in your rosca on Kings Day, you're hosting a tamale party on 2/2.Candlemas)

Thursday, Feb 5  Artist Fair on Town Square 4-9p with Taste of Isla 5-7p
