Boat tour operators & fishermen affected by port closure

ISLA MUJERES, 18 de febrero.-
After the port was last night (Tuesday) for vessels under 40 feet, hundreds of boats used for fishing or tourism services were affected, and unable to take advantage of the many visitors who continue to arrive daily. At 11:30 am today (Wednesday) the Harbor Master suspended all fishing, boating, and diving activities, for boats under 40 feet, including tours to Contoy and tours within the bay, lagoon, and Farito areas, due to strong winds gusting up to 55 kilometers per hour. Navigational restrictions are expected to continue through Friday, and are due to cold front #36.

Hotels disagree over extended hours for ferries

ISLA MUJERES, 18 de febrero.-
Some members of the Small Hotels Association Fascinantes of Isla Mujeres are opposed to the extension of ferry hours, saying the increased crossings could cause harm by giving opportunity to thieves, and it may cause concerns for parents if youths spend later hours in Cancun.

Twelve Islander couples were married on the premises of the DIF, with the Mayor and his wife as godparents (padrinos) for the twelve couples. Other officials were in attendance, with some giving speeches. Their names and comments about marriage are included in the article.
     There will be 31 couples married on the mainland area of the Isla Mujeres municipality on Thursday at noon at the Community Center.

Damages of over 6000 pesos in a golf cart accident
Officers with the Traffic Police confirmed there was a second accident...

The Director of the municipal Traffic police confirmed a second vehicular accident occurred yesterday, when a motorcycle was hit by a rental golf cart. The site of the accident was on prolongation Rueda Medina, near the Corona beer distributor. The motorcycle was a new Italika, without plates, driven by 24 year old Abram Mendez Nahuat, who works at a well known hotel. It was hit by a rental golf cart from the agency "Isla", which driven by Christine Halloran, of New York.
     According to the report, the motorcycle was about to overtake the cart when the cart changed direction, causing an impact between the motorcycle and the left side of the cart. The young man suffered injuries, so he was transferred to the General Hospital, but none of the injuries were life threatening. According to the report, damage to the golf cart amounted to 6000 pesos, in addition to damages to the motorcycle, which is new.

It was an honor to be witnesses at an act of love such as marriage. Congratulations to all the couples who formalized their relationships at the Collective Wedding Ceremony.

La mañana de este miércoles se llevó a cabo la tradicional ceremonia de las Bodas Colectivas 2015, evento coordinado por el Sistema DIF Municipal y en el que en esta ocasión 43 parejas unieron sus vidas formalizando sus vidas formalizando su relación: 12 en la ínsula y 31 en Rancho Viejo.

Wednesday morning, fire was put out by the firefighters of the Civil Protection agency at a palapa located in Punta Sur, with help from employees of two well known companies.

At four churches in Isla Mujeres, Ash Wednesday was celebrated in preparation for the 40 days of Lent. The churches are: “Caridad del Cobre”; a “Inmaculada Concepción”; “Guadalupe” and “Sagrado Corazón de Jesús”. The meaning of the ceremony and the religious period are explained in the article.

. For the next month we'll be synced with EST,  until March 8, when the US goes onto DST (and we don't). Then for ~8 months we are in sync w Central Time in the US, since we will no longer be changing back & forth with Daylight Savings Time. (DST is March 8-Nov.1 in the US, and April 5-Oct. 25 in Mexico.)           
        We're only synced with EST  in the US ~4 mos/yr from Nov 1-March 8.     
         To permanently adjust your clocks, you can chose a location like Panama that stays on EST without changing to DST

 Monday, February 2 no school/day off for February 5th Constitution Day. (And if you got the baby in your rosca on Kings Day, you're hosting a tamale party on 2/2.Candlemas)

February 2-8 Island Time Fishing Tournament -- a week of music and fishing to benefit the Little Yellow School House.


Thursday February 12th will be the Navy Wives Breakfast at 9:00 am at Club Naval in Centro. The proceeds go to the Navy Hospital. This month the theme is Valentine's Day, and the tickets will be 120 pesos. This breakfast is really more like lunch, and we should be meeting the wife of the new commandant.
