A tour of public works projects was done by officials including federal legislator Román Quian Alcocer; the municipal president of Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magaña Sánchez, and a committee of secretary's of the State Cabinet led by Juan Pablo Guillermo, head of the Planning and Finance department. They announced another 14.8 million pesos will be invested in the new Hospital, which will allow it to open very soon (muy pronto).  The tour included other projects in which the government has invested,  including renovations of sports areas, the Command Center for Firefighters, and the Casa de Cultura, which will open its doors soon (en breve).

Director of Public Works of Isla Mujeres, Miguel Ariel Caballero Garcia, confirmed that the work of "Skate Park" started at the Chiapeneco park area... (that photo is of a 'typical' skate park & not taken in Isla Mujeres.) This is intended for aficionados of the sport, particularly young people,  and will include some ramps and obstacles, which are typically used for this activity. This was a decision by the mayor to renovate this area, and to build the first Skate Park of Isla Mujeres. It will involve an investment of 2.5 million pesos and should be ready to open later this month, he said.

To avoid interfering with commercial activities, repairs were made during the wee hours of the night, to the 'adocretos' paving stones of Morelos avenue, to avoid potential accidents by tourists or residents.

Through the City of Isla Mujeres, via the Ministry of Social Development, the municipality continues to support seniors in the three areas that make up the township: the Island,  the Continental Zone, and the Agriculture area.
A través del Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres, la Secretaría de Desarrollo Social, sigue apoyando a los adultos mayores de las tres zonas que conforman el municipio: Insular, Continental y Agrícola.
El próximo viernes 20 tendrá lugar el pago y prueba de supervivencia del programa 65 y más Pensión para el Adulto Mayor; a las 9 de la mañana en el Centro de Convenciones de la isla y a las 12 del día en el Centro Comunitario de Rancho Viejo, en la Zona Continental.

The Quality Schools program agreement was signed yesterday by the Quintana Roo Secretary of Education and Culture and the Municipal Government, with the objective to benefit the schools economically and improve the educational infrastructure and academic training. The main schools that will benefit are the primary school Julio Sauri Espinosa on the island, and the middle school on the mainland.
Con el objetivo de beneficiar a las escuelas económicamente para el mejoramiento de la infraestructura educativa así como la formación académica del alumnado, se realizó ayer la firma de convenio del programa Escuelas de Calidad, entre la Secretaria de Educación y Cultura de Q. Roo y el gobierno municipal.
Los planteles beneficiados son la primaria Julio Sauri Espinosa de la ínsula y la Secundaria Técnica Núm. 30 Islas Hermanas Cancún- Isla Mujeres de Rancho Viejo en la Zona Continental.

. For the next month we'll be synced with EST,  until March 8, when the US goes onto DST (and we don't). Then for ~8 months we are in sync w Central Time in the US, since we will no longer be changing back & forth with Daylight Savings Time. (DST is March 8-Nov.1 in the US, and April 5-Oct. 25 in Mexico.)           We're only synced with EST" ~4 mos/yr from Nov 1-March 8. To permanently adjust your clocks, you can chose a location like Panama that stays on EST without changing to DST

February 2-8 Island Time Fishing Tournament -- a week of music and fishing to benefit the Little Yellow School House.


Thursday February 12th will be the Navy Wives Breakfast at 9:00 am at Club Naval in Centro. The proceeds go to the Navy Hospital. This month the theme is Valentine's Day, and the tickets will be 120 pesos. This breakfast is really more like lunch, and we should be meeting the wife of the new commandant.
