Yesterday evening was magical, majestic, and unforgettable during the finals of the state contest for "Abuelito - Abuelita 2014". The staff of the Isla Mujeres DIF (Social Service agency) spent weeks preparing, with dedication and enthusiasm, for this great event which honored the seniors for their shared experiences and lessons.
The competing senior citizens arrived last Monday, from all corners of the state. The grand finale was held in a wonderful setting overlooking the majestic Caribbean Sea, before an enthusiastic crowd that filled the plaza of the Casa de Cultura.
The professionalism of the choreography was impressive as the all the participants performed to the ABBA song "Dancing Queen". The second performance was presentations of their costumes, and for the third performance they modeled evening dress and gave their speeches.
This sixth edition of the contest was won by Pilar Avila Acosta and Rafael Romero Rodríguez, representing the municipality of  Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Second place was won by the grandmother & grandfather representing Isla Mujeres, María Eugenia E. de la Peña Hernández and Mario Rubén García Delgado. Third place was taken by the representatives of Othon P Blanco municipality,  Dulce María del Socorro Cerón Mendoza and David Leonardo Aguilar Ku.
"Abuelita Simpatía”, was awarded to the representative from Solidaridad, María Custiniamos Uitz; and “Abuelita Fotogénica”, was won by Julia Minerva Barbosa Hernández, from the municipality of Tulum. State and local officials were in attendance.

In response to rumors that they may lose their portion of Federal Zone, members of the fishing cooperative "Caribe" have planted coconut palms and bushes at beach where the entrance (bocacalle) of Abasolo street faces the bay as it intersects with Rueda Medina (main street and malecon). They asked for an explanation, and indications are for them to submit a formal request on Monday with their signatures. They wish to retain this area of beach access, and do not want it to be granted to others as a concession, as has happened in other areas.

Of the past nine local administration, at least seven carried out remodeling or renovation of the park on the Town Square, and millions of pesos have been spent on these public works over the years. The current renovation is estimated to cost about 1.2 million pesos, and is expected to include the removal of the fountain, the expansion of the concrete, and possibly building a kiosk, among other modifications. (They are using federal funds from Rama 33)
When the fountain was installed during the administration of Manuela Godoy Gonzalez, this park at the Town Square was completely renovated, at a cost of 9 million pesos. Other mayors who remodeled or renovated the park include Paulino Adame Torres, Jorge Martínez Peña, Jorge Cárdenas Bazán and Fidel Villanueva Madrid. One of the main renovations was done by the administration of  Joel Saury Galué, and  following damage by hurricane Gilberto, by mayor Gerardo Magaña Barragán. No incidents so far during this vacation period

As of Saturday, the good influx of visitors continued, and a "Saldo Blanco" was maintained (literally it means 'white balance' and indicates a lack of  any significant incidents). Many day trippers are visiting, and there are more than 50 companies engaged in moving tourists from mainland points including Punta Sam, Puerto Juarez, Calinda, and other areas in the Hotel Zone of Cancun, as well as the activity from the marinas. There are also private yachts bringing families and visitors from the Riviera Maya to enjoy the island. Frequent transfers are made by tourism boats such as catamarans and trimarans. The main roads of the island become chaotic at times during the peak of the day when tourists are touring around in golf carts and scooters, as well as riding in taxis. This is an everyday experience.  Esta vivencia es cotidiana.

Karen Rosenberg's
NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.
We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.
The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.
