Dozens of boats participated in the ceremony placing a wreath above the Cross of the Bay to commemorate 20 years since it was installed. The mayor Agapito Magaña Sánchez was in charge of the event and was accompanied by his wife Marthy Varguez de Magaña.
The procession began at the
church of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception at about 9am, and moved
through the downtown area to the vehicle ferry dock, where one of the
ferries sailed out into the bay at 10:30 am. At about 11am there was a
Mass to mark the 20th anniversary of the immersion of the "Cruz de la
Bahia", in the area of Los Manchones.

The Catholic Church is planning a retreat for married couples on October 3, 4, & 5th at the Hotel Cristalmar, and expecting 40 couples to attend. At the event last year, there were thirty couples at the event and last weekend 14 couples spent three days at "Marriage Encounter" retreat at a local hotel. The priest Raul Sanchez Alonzo said the previous events were successful at strengthening the bonds between the couples and making them more united.

The Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez said, "Those who live on the island, those who live in the continental zone, those who were born here, and those who came after to contribute their best to improving this location; we are all isleños (islanders)." He also spoke emotionally about the contributions, dedication, and commitment of Professor Gilberto Avalos Galue, who recently died. Other speeches were made, and the official's names are given in the article.

Increasing security at Salina Grande

0 18 de agosto de 2014 In response to citizen complaints about burglaries and a lack of security in the area, the police chief, Joaquin Poot Acosta said they are increasing patrols in Salina Grande at the walking path. Residents also complained about a lack of lighting, and now there is better lighting at the path, said the police chief. The foot patrols will be equipped with radios, so they can request support if there is a problem.Last June the City Council approved hiring 40 officers, and now that the increase has been achieved, the police chief said they plan to meet several commitments on the island, as well as on the mainland. As a result, there is now more staff to assign to areas where it was previously difficult to give coverage.

Preparing maritime procession to Isla Contoy
Preparan la procesión marítima a Contoy0 18 de agosto de 2014The pilgrimage taking the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre to Isla Contoy will take place on September 6th. This annual traditional event includes hundreds of people, and recently the fishermen had a meeting and a tour of Isla Contoy to determine what is needed for the event. The Virgin icon is taken from the chapel of the Church of Immaculate Conception aboard a boat for the pilgrimage by sea to Isla Contoy, where a Mass is celebrated. The leader of the fishermen in Isla Mujeres, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, said about 100 boats are expected to participate and the cruise takes about 50 minutes. He said last year about 80 vessels participated.

He said that the laws governing the performance of his duties allow him to produce his work from his home, and to house the historical materials there. He said it has been five years since the plans were made for the Casa de la Cronica of Isla Mujeres, but no resources have been allotted yet.
He said he also serves as Chairman of the Technical Advisory Board of the Isla Contoy National Park, in an honorary, unpaid capacity, as well being a consultant for the project of cultural rescue that is taking place currently at the Hacienda Vista Alegre of Fermin Mundaca, also altruistically, without charging a penny.
"I regret that there are people who accuse me without being able to prove their allegations. Your assumptions are just that and nothing more, " said Sr. Villanueva in the final part of his email.
Sr Sosa replied by saying the historical materials should be readily available as reference tools for students, researchers, and tourists, and asked which law empowers the historian to "virtually own what is the cultural heritage of the town".
Sr. Villanueva works for the City as the head of the municipal union, and Sr. Sosa alleged that he was collecting pay from two jobs simultaneously, which would be illegal. That translation & link to that article yesterday is HERE.

Sr. Avalos left five teenagers, and many friends in political, sports, and social spheres. His last public office was representing Isla Mujeres at the Department of Education of Quintana Roo. He served as a mentor for three decades at the primary school “Andrés Quintana Roo”, but in recent years has delegated this responsibility to a colleague. He has had direct contact with several generations of students, who expressed surprise and consternation at his sudden death. There is conjecture that economic difficulties may have been a factor in his suicide. Authorities have said they have no reason to suspect any foul play.

On August 31, about 500 athletes, both Mexican and international, are expected to participate in an open water swimming competition, Competencia de Nado de Aguas Abiertas, at Playa Norte/North Beach. The swimmers will travel distances between 250 meters and five kilometers, with the course being defined by a rectangle of buoys off Playa Norte. Dozens of foreigners are expected to participate, especially from the United States.
