The reporter toured golf cart rental agencies and reported that due to the large number of Americans & Europeans visiting and using their services, they are "making a killing in the month of February" and demand has 'skyrocketed'. It is noted that the number of visitors has not decreased since the beginning of the year. Rental rates range from 270 pesos per hour to 550 pesos for all day, without consideration for the 100 pesos for the comisionista/hawker. It is noted that although most tourists prefer to rent golf carts, there is demand for the little boats that offer tours in the Isla Mujeres bay.

Lack of respect for gifts from famous sculptors

There were 23 artists who donated steel sculptures in 2001 for the Sculpture Park at Punta Sur, and now there are 22 sculptures are still standing, but weakened. The state government announced that in 2014 there will be 2,385,358 pesos invested in the Sculpture Park, but the plan was not given. Of the 23 sculptors, 11 are foreign, and 12 are Mexicans. The foreigners are from Egypt, Iceland, Bulgaria, Colombia, and the United States. The sculpture of American Bruce Beasely collapsed over two years ago. The sculptors donated their work to the community of Isla Mujeres on December 8, 2001 to welcome the new millennium.

Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco was appointed the new Director of Tourism , replacing Hamed Carmelina Martinez during a brief event in the council room, where two other appointments were also made. He was the head of Citizen Participation (Participación Ciudadana) which is now being led by the Secretary of the City.
Yuseli Juliana López Tec, is the new head of the Women's agency, Instancia de la Mujer, a position she has held previously, and the head of the agency of Patrimonio Municipal, is now Jorge Clemente Pimentel Cruz.
It is expected that the new Tourism director will be eager to listen to the business community's concerns about comisionista hawkers annoying tourists and about street vendors, among other issues. The Mayor announced an upcoming meeting with Jesus Almaguer, of the OVC, Office of Visitors and Conventions in Cancun about topics such as the promotional video that has awaited release for three years, investment in infrastructure, new developments, and other topics.
Coconut palms enjoy good health
Gozan de buena salud palmas cocoteras[+] Ver mas
This is another article about the yellowing disease that decimated the coco palms in Isla Mujeres and Cancun in 1982, noting the current palms have resistance to that disease, which is caused by an insect (Mynduscrudus). This threat was unusual and was contained by the government to protect the economy of the coconut farmers because Mexico is the seventh largest producer, according to the FAO.
There are inspectors who conduct regular monitoring of the palm trees. In recent years they have been affected by the Red mite Raoiella indica, which has been treated by the government. The staff of the municipal department of Ecology are pruning the trees and will give brochures to the holders of the Federal Zone beach concessions, advising them that pruning of the palm trees is the responsibility of the concessionaires.
