Yesterday afternoon--Official Information from the State Civil Protection Department says there are no reports of damage or danger to the coasts of Quintana Roo. This link is from the state CP agency, confirming that the Secretary of the Navy of Mexico has announced there is no Tsunami Alert at this time. The graphic says..Do you know that a Tsunami hitting Quintana Roo is unlikely due to its geographical location. (There was a 7.7 magnitude earthquake off Jamaica earlier this afternoon, causing Tsunami alerts in that area.)

Inauguration of exhibit of art made from matchsticks
An exhibition of Mexico-themed works of art made from matchsticks, entitled "Ser I Yo" by Argentine artist Alejandro Colman Lerner, was inaugurated at the Perlas del Caribe hotel. It is open to the public free of charge from January 28 to February 28 from 9a-7p, and there are no restrictions against taking photos. The hotel is located on the downtown Caribbean malecon, near the Casa de la Cultura.
The municipal Director of Art & Culture, Hilda Christina Gomez Avila, said, “For the island government it is very important to promote and maintain a municipality with art and culture in its different expressions and, on this occasion, it is a great exhibition of replicas of animals, vehicles and even emblematic Mexican buildings made with wooden matches by Argentinian Alex Lerner and open to the islander public ”.
The artist explained that the itinerant exhibition is traveling around various parts of Mexico and noted that each piece has a special history. He expressed his appreciation to the municipal government and the hotel.

Isla Mujeres news briefs

Breves de Isla Mujeres

On Monday, the National campaign"“Compartiendo esfuerzo” / Sharing forces began with the theme "Alcoholism in Women--The Hidden Truth". In municipalities around Mexico, including Isla Mujeres, during this week the medical sector will participate, in coordination with Alcoholics Anonymous personnel. The campaign officiall ends on Sunday, Feb. 2nd.
Modules & public information booths about AA, symptoms of alcoholism, and the 12 steps program have been installed in the facilities of the IMSS Family Medicine Unit, the ISSSTE, and the Community Hospital. The CRIM union facility will begin participating on Tuesday in the morning. A hotel in Sac Bajo plans to open its doors to members of the Central Mexican General  Services of Alcoholics Anonymous group so they may meet with employees.

On Monday before dawn, dozens of beer cans were left at Playa Centro, and many went into the sea before the beach cleaning crew were able to remove them. Residents say this type of problem occurs frequently, and they want officials to discover who is responsible for these bad practices and impose sanctions. Some say these negative events are the responsibility of people from other places and not residents, "who are much more aware". It is noted that this isn't in accordance with the government's plan to keep this area completely clean because it is among the 54 beaches and three marinas who have earned the Blue Flag designation in Mexico.

Deterioration of Punta Sur stores

Locales deteriorados en Punta Sur

The commercial premises of the municipal government that are located at Punta Sur are in need of maintenance, because the steel structure had deteriorated. There are twelve small stores there, whose tenants are concerned. They are also complaining of slow sales of only 400 pesos daily. One merchant  who pays 1700 pesos monthly said, "We are paying 244,800 pesos in rent annually, and it is only fair that the reinvestment is made in the whole property, for its image and the safety of tourists visiting Punta Sur." (1200/mo x 12 mos is 20,400 times 12 stores is 244,800 pesos total).
The merchants are concerned that a strong 'norte' wind or a hurricane could cause the roof to collapse. Concerning low sales, they say the groups of visitors who arrive are taken by guides to another area. They think this has to do with the fact that for six months the municipal authorities stopped charging an entrance fee to what was formerly the Sculpture Park, then visitors enter the site and don't have time to go to their stores afterwards.
They say they are currently experiencing low sales at this time when they have to pay high municipal fees and taxes such as the trash fee of 2800 pesos, which is 600 more than last year, their land usage fee, operating license, and Civil Protection requirements.   In addition they pay electric bills of 400 pesos every two months, which in many cases are only for light bulbs.
When visiting the location, the parking lot is often full, with more than 200 golf carts, in addition to taxis, private vehicles, and scooters. There are many people, but they are not buying like they were more than six months ago.
During the upcoming month, access is expected to become complicated by the work on the introduction of the wastewater network to this area, however it will be improved with the road is repaved.

Cold front won't affect Isla Mujeres

Frente frío no afectará a Isla Mujeres

Jan 27--Cold front #34 was in the Gulf of Mexico & not expected to affect Isla Mujeres, due to southern winds which were expected to prevent the cold front from reaching a strength of more than 14kph.  The two systems were expected to collide on Tuesday, with temperatures remaining pleasant at night, around 23C and reaching 27 degrees during the day. A new polar mass is expected to prevent temperatures from getting too hot on Tuesday and Wednesday.
There were many tourists on Monday enjoying the beaches, the nautical activities and the island in general. Economic activity is expected to remain good during the week, and good lobster catches are expected to continue.

Friday, Jan. 3 First quarter moon. After the moon has completed the first quarter of its orbit around Earth, the relative positions of the Earth, sun, and moon cause us to see it half-illuminated — on its eastern side. At first quarter, the moon always rises around noon and sets around midnight local time, so it is conveniently positioned for observing before youngsters' bedtimes. The evenings around first quarter are excellent for looking at the lunar terrain while it is dramatically lit by low-angled sunlight. (Source-Space.com)

The Thor Heyerdahl traveling school-sailboat visits in late January-early February with about three dozen high school students on board. Under the tutelage of the experienced crew, the students learn to work together, sailing and navigating, as well as receiving their normal lessons. They sail from Germany to the Caribbean, departing in October and returning home in May.
The ship is named for the man who sailed a hand made raft "Kon Tiki" from South America 5000 miles across the Pacific to the Tuamotu Islands in 1947, to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between apparently separate cultures. LINK
