Large quantities of seaweed have been arriving along the eastern coast of the island, including Media Luna / Half Moon beach, where swimming isn't allowed (due to the currents). The workers of ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone agency) clean North Beach daily, but not this eastern beach. There are concerns that the accumulated seaweed could interfere with the turtles whose nesting season will begin soon.
Due to the geographical position of Isla Mujeres, it does not  usually retain much of the seaweed, which passes along to continue its trip to the Yucatan Channel, heading to the Gulf of Mexico where it will be degraded and will  become a temporary refuge of sea turtles during the breeding season in summer and autumn, according to experts in the cycles of nature.

Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen outside the facility. This is the dry season when farmers burn brush from their milpa-fields on the mainland, and salt was gathered at Salina Grande lake for hundreds of years, until the mid 1900's.
