Experts from Mexico City arrive in Playa del Carmen to investigate the explosion on a Barcos Caribe Ferry
* The three levels of government are working on the investigation, at the Pier where the explosion occurred, which is operated by a private company.
* It is a priority to provide security to tourists and locals who arrive and depart at  the various docks where  transportation services are provided.
Playa del Carmen, Q. Roo.- The director of the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (APIQROO) Alicia Ricalde Magaña, said that authorities from the three levels of government are working to determinet the cause of the explosion on a Barcos Caribe ferry on Wednesday afternoon, at the fiscal dock in Playa del Carmen, which is operated and managed by a private company.

The state official explained that personnel from the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of the Navy, the Federal Police, and the State Attorney General's Office are working on the investigations. There are two investigative files, one prepared by the Federal Attorney General's Office (PGR), and one with the State Attorney General's Office.
Ms. Ricalde Magana stressed the importance of clarifying that this is the first event of its kind in the state, and the maritime terminal is very busy with an average of five million passengers a year. More experts are expected to arrived from the nation's capitol to help with the investigations.
The Director of APIQROO said that her agency will provide all available information to assist with investigating this unfortunate incident, including the crew information, and surveillance camera videos, which have the ability to record the faces and items that passengers are carrying at the moment when they ascend and descend on the ferry. By the way, this in recently acquired equipment due to the concern of Governor Carlos Joaquín, to provide security to tourists and locals who arrive and depart at various docks that provide transportation service in the state.    Ms. Ricalde Magana made it clear that the cause of the explosion will have to be determined and the populace will be informed, however she asked that the specialists be left to do their work to get to the bottom of the matter. She said that ferry service between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel is being provided as usual. The Port Authority will continue to provide clear and responsible information.   LINK

Planning increased security at Maritime Terminals
Following the events at a Playa del Carmen pier, Port Authorities are not ruling out the possibility of increasing security measures and certifying several of the docks to be able to act in the event of a contingency, like that which occurred on Wednesday.
Isla Mujeres Harbor Master Ismael González Gil said that at the next meeting of the committee of the Quintana Integral Port Administration, scheduled for Feb. 26, they plan to address this situation.
He said that even while the investigation is underway for the cause of the explosion on the Barcos Caribe ferry, it is of the utmost importance to work at the certification of the docks so that they have the equipment and ability to attend an emergency or fire.
He refrained from issuing an opinion on the cause of the explosion, saying that will be determined by the appropriate authorities.
However, he said that this incident is a warning for the other docks, as well as the ferry companies themselves, to pay more attention to the merchandise that goes onto the boats.
He said that the certified docks should have more personnel, more vigilance, and more extinguishers and equipment for fighting fires. And could use a detachment of federal forces supported with canines, who are experts in detecting weapons or explosives. LINK

Some seaweed has landed on the east coast

Feb. 22  In recent days, a bit of seaweed has begun to land on the eastern coast of the island, without having any impact on the beach areas of Playa Centro or North Beach, according to lifeguards of Civil Protection. This occurs in relation to the change in the winds from the southeast, and seaweed tends to arrive in the spring and summer, but traditionally, the island is not greatly affected because of its geographical position.  When some seaweed does arrive to the tourism beach areas, the Federal Zone personnel, as well as the staff of the beach concession holders, are attentive about removing it.
During the winter season, the two tourism beaches remain impeccable, and are under constant monitoring due to their Blue Flag and White Flag designations, in compliance with the international standards.
On Thursday there were large numbers of visitors at these beaches, at a time when the departure of small boats for recreation in the  open water remained restricted. Fishermen also remained on land, due to dangers caused by waves of up to three meters and winds of 30 km/hr or more, with gusts exceeding 40km/hr

Restaurant employees who need to renew their health cards are complaining about the Community Hospital because they are only allowing five per day. The next group of people have to stand in line from 5am to wait for one of the five spaces available after 7am, when the door opens to the module that is located behind the main entrance of the large two story building. This decision was made by "instructions from the director of the hospital". The unofficial version is that this is related to the fact that not a penny of the charge for the service of renewing the cards goes to the hospital.
At the former General Hospital downtown, they provided this service for permit renewal for dozens of waiters, cooks, bartenders, and nightclub workers per day, when the date for renewal arrived. They are appealing to  Alejandra Aguirre Crespo, Secretary of Health of Quintana Roo, who a few months ago said that by 2018 everything would be different in the Community Hospital. They say this has not been complied with, and there continues to be deficiencies in treatment and medical attention, including a lack of sufficient medicins for the elderly with chronic diseases.
On another issue, there was a complaint about food business managers not being given receipts for the courses they took about food handling from COFEPRIS. The initial charge was 600 pesos per person and the second was 4600 pesos for renewal of the sanitary opinion document (dictamen sanitario), and receipts were not issued for either payment. The affected person was advised to report this to the regulatory department that is installed in the hospital.
